How US President Joe Biden cost NZ a second NRL team
How White House geo-politics spoiled plans for a Christchurch NRL team.www.nzherald.co.nz
Didn't even need much, honestly it's a drop in the ocean, the US scratching an itch to stick it right up any leverage china could ever create, this would never seen to be a thing without any govt influence, but I'm glad it happened, purely to show the naysayers of the RL sporting fanbase that anything is possible and to never back against saint PeterZR board would be forced to reapply under
Included alongside the headline-grabbing support for Ukraine and Israel was a war chest for other strategic allies including Australia. Biden’s package contained US$8.2 billion (NZ$13.71bn) “to counter communist China” in the Indo-Pacific.
That handout sealed a deal that virtually guarantees a franchise representing PNG will be granted entry into Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) competition, possibly as early as 2026 but more likely the year after.
No the money was from Biden to Australia.Maybe Biden is paying the 600 million

In the budget
"The Government will provide $206.5 million over four years from 2024–25 (and $6.9 million
per year ongoing) to enhance Australia’s presence in Pacific Island countries and ability to
support the Pacific family."
So $50m per year for the entire Pacific, and then $6.9m per year also for the entire Pacific.
Falls well short of the $60m per year for PNG alone.
tbf I wouldnt expect the png nrl funding to be in this budget. the nrl hasnt even made a decision yet, at least officially.
for a 27/28 admission. If the Govt had put it in the budget before the nrl announced it that would look pretty stupidLol, it'll be announced on June 2!!

They've already committed a few mill which can go to the start up costs over next 12 months. The big $ commitment would then kick in 25-26 for a 27/28 admission. In which case it wouldn't be announced until next years budget. Not really. The NRL can't announce it without confirmed funding from the govt. The govt can't confirm it without passing a budget.
For things that they can't or don't want to release full details, they have 'not for publication', so they could have done that if they didn't want to spoil the announcement.
Also, given the funding is supposed to be for pathways and education, and not actually for the team, it shouldn't matter when the NRL team is due to be introduced, the funding should surely happen earlier to help build the infrastructure.

How US President Joe Biden cost New Zealand a second NRL team
A multi-billion dollar financial pledge from US President Joe Biden may have scuppered New Zealand's dreams of fielding a second NRL team, to be based out of Christchurch.www.google.com
It will need to be more then that. Surely it is only feasible if the NRL don't have to give them the grant every year.6.59M wow! they could afford one David Fifita contract!
