My biggest fear is the outrage it will cause amongst Australians who are feeling the pinch. Electricity bills, rent and interest rates are getting higher. People who are struggling to put food on the table won't want to hear that their money is going towards a football team from PNG. There's plenty of people in Brisbane who don't want the 2032 Olympics due to the cost of living crisis.

Money is not coming from Aussie government.

60 million pa is a round error

He wasted 400 million on the referendum which had zero chance of passing and Ukraine is still bludging off us

We should not be giving any money to Ukraine or Israel. The Voice was a disaster. Elon Musk made a fool out of Albo the other day. Albo has been a terrible PM.

He can deliver on png and go im fine

Dutton won’t be any better though

increasing migration when there is little new construction was a recipe for disaster though
None of the major parties do anything for Australians. Some times I wonder whether it's worth living in this country. Everything is overpriced and our economy is crumbling to the ground.

The only reason to stay us the weather and rugby league.

Vlandys confirmed this morning NRL is meeting with Aus Govt today and its D day for a decision on PNG. Other things he confirmed:

May not be team 18
Will be based in PNG not Cairns if it happens
Still trying to get a tax break from Aus govt
Not concerned about security at all
Still some things Aus govt need to agree to or it wont happen

Other article:

Abdo also addressed NRL expansion, with the Papua New Guinea bid leading the race but not guaranteed to come in as the 18th club.

“No major update at the moment. We’re hard at work looking at the business case and thinking about expansion very strategically and carefully,” he said.

“Once our analysis is complete, the commission will make a decision and provide clarity.

“We’re in a position where we’re thinking about growth in both the men’s and women’s game, and that’s a really healthy position to be in.

“We’re in significant talks about what that would look like and what an expansion team in Papua New Guinea (would mean), but we’re also looking at expansion much more broadly than just 18 teams.

“We need to consider the overall benefit for the game of rugby league, so it’s multifaceted.

“It’s not just about a licence for an 18th team – it’s also about the investment in participation and pathways and thinking about growing the game internationally.”

By based means where team plays. Won't play in Cairns.

This will be a real vote winner

It's clear that the NRL is starting to retreat from PNG as team 18, as most of us suspected in the last few months.

Hopefully @Get Rid of The Donkeys idea of funding France's New Caledonia colony comes off now , that seems like a very well thought out idea, with no downside.

Wow! 2 things..1: PNG not guaranteed...and 2: "Growing the game internationally "..
If they don't get an outstanding offer from the government, that puts NZ in the box seat!
I suggest Vlandys is playing his usual games, making it sound like they will walk away to get what they need form the Govt for it. Its certainly the first real time he has suggested it might not happen.
