PNG is most league mad place on earth with plenty of industry that would support club

There is no literally no source of revenue. That’s the difference. It is essentially a money pit

Now if somebody wants to do that, then fine let them. But don’t on one hand suggest a side in Australia would be too costly and need propping up (and arguing that as a negative) whilst at the time arguing that this ok. It is complete hypocrisy.

This is exactly my argument.

Why have a PNG nrl franchise with all its financial pitfalls when you can/could achieve everything players development wise with the hunters at a smaller financial risk?

Totally agree. It would cost less to have an academy there and have a few teams in the QLD Cup. Same with other countries in the Pacific Region like Fiji or Samoa.

You could even have say 2 positions in each first grade squad dedicated to Pacific born players

Been saying this for years that there needs to be NRL run and funded academies in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, New Caledonian and the Solomon Islands etc.

They should also be run on the same principle as US college football draft system in that the teams finishing at the bottom of the NRL table should have 1st pick on the best junior players.

Exactly. A draft system would be good for players on the periphery, so players could nominate from the Pacific Nations and other countries - I would be intrigued by players from the US not making the NFL etc) players unsigned from NSW Cup/QLD Cup/Affiliated States or players let go and unsigned from top grades

It would be interesting because it would open up avenues for players to be signed from areas that clubs are neglecting or not looking at currently.

And that’s even before you factor in things like PNG being a 3rd world country, high crime rates, hardly any NRL standard kumul players, heavy reliance on overseas players and potential political instability etc.

People are quick to dismiss the poverty, a lot of assumptions of sell-out crowds every week. I remember similar things were said about Hunters yet their crowds in the years pre-covid whilst good for a Queensland Cup team were not even close to selling out their 15k stadium.

I’m sure fans would love to attend every game but reality is unless the open the gates for free or next to nothing the majority won’t be able to afford many if any games a year.

Mate the country is a 3rd world country with high crime rate and it’s population has very little disposable income.

Whos going to play for the PNG nrl franchise?

It would absolutely have to be a FIFO team based in Cairns or Brisbane. Even then I don’t see many Aus/NZ players signing for them. Likewise most PNG players would be snapped up by other clubs after a good year.

Hunters running junior teams in the QLD systems should be the next logical step.

Hunters running u18&u20 junior sides should have already happened years ago.

The majority of players picked up by the hunters from the digicel cup are in their early to mid 20’s and even older. The hunters players need to be exposed to a fulltime professional environment and culture from the ages of 18 and 19 or ideally even younger.

Its no coincidence that few if any hunters players have progressed into the NRL.

In true RL fashion each of the 3 bids have major flaws that could potentially harm the future prospects of all 3 teams.

If you had the fanaticism of the PNG supporters and the talent pool of New Zealand combined with the wealthy financial support of Perth you’d potentially have a ”super club” on your hands. lol!!!
Thats like saying lets merge penriths juniors, with Melbourne structure, and in finanials from Brisbane... then call them the roosters.... in Adelaide! FMD

If we were all about safer options, the warriors wouldn't exist, mate im not sure many of the expansion sides would exist...
Seriously townsville? Middle of f**kn knowhere... but here they are currently 2nd on the ladder... PNG has 9 million people, all RL fans... put this in perspective, NZ has only 5 million population, they are NOT giving much love to the warriors, yet they have a team... and PNG don't... f**k all that 3rd world talk... 20k filled stadium out of 9 million, seriously give them a team... most clubs cant even fill our 20k stadiums.. unless they are winning

Yeah i know, but there is way too much worrying over obsure costs, and running of clubs, whats the point in a perth team if its just cannon fodder getting put on 50 every week, whats the point in NZ if theyll be the rabble/the warriors v2.0.... PNG will win games, and be cut about a loss, other places will just have folks switch channels..

“f**k all that 3rd world talk” doesn’t pay the bills unfortunately.

Giving a NRL franchise to PNG would be like setting up a Porsche dealership in Port Moresby. I’m sure they’d all love to drive and own a Porsche but how many could afford one?

9 million people don't need porches, besides you buy one, then someone will end up stealing it.... seriously the WHOLE country isn't poor, the percentage of the richer or stable enough to see a live game... are you telling me that there isn't atleast 5% of the population that will watch and pay their way..
Pfft... you're just blanketing the country..
If south africa is so poor how are they play union? Sorry they all must dirt poor and still trunking keffers

That's not really an apt comparison.

South Africa has US$426b to PNG's US$30b. That's a 14 times larger economy.

South Africa also has four cities with more than 3.2 million people each. Port Elizabeth only has 1.3m, and they're the poorer cousins of the league. Port Moresby only has ~400k.

Port Moresby has 1/8 the population of cities hosting the successful teams.

PNGs have a per capita wage of 28% of South Africans.

The wage combined with the population means Port Moresby would only have 3.5% of the economic ability to host a team as Durban, Cape Town, Jo'burg or Pretoria.

With an average of So there's not a big pool of people that can go

Storm don't make profit. Their owners keep them going plus TV money every club gets
you are so ignorant, or a really bad troll, lol

there is no way in hell a png side can raise $15mill a year revenue, it’s a pipe dream and the nrl should step in now before this bid waste any more time and money and build anymore hope up That disappoints their govt and people.

they should be concentrating on Improving the digicel cup, creating elite jnr academies backed by nrl clubs and maybe getting a second team in qlnd cup.

You're so phased locked. You think in only crowds & members. None of that matters. Expansions need wealthy backer & PNG may have the most wealthy

Firstly, crowds and members do matter. Clubs have to be somewhat self sufficient in case the macro environment changes - we just had COVID for example. If the worst happens again they have to have the funds to survive. In any case, haven’t you had a go at the Storm because they don’t make money; now you are saying that clubs don’t have to self-sufficient?

Secondly, they would want to be. They are going to tip in millions and millions of dollars for an unlimited time without any revenue base are they? At least if you expanded anywhere in Australia and New Zealand, they will have money coming in

Essentially, your point is thus: backers tipping in money for PNG = good, backers tipping in money for an area that you don’t like = very bad.
