Papua New Guinea's NRL bid: Australia plays 'game of statecraft and power politics'

Canberra is offering A$600 million over 10 years for a prospective PNG club in the NRL on condition that the PNG government does not sign a security deal with China.

A very interesting point. $US600 million is a sneeze to China. If they really wanted to play soft diplomacy themselves they could belt and road the shit out of PNG to the tunes of billions of dollars.

Australia actually is the one nation here who is behind the 8 ball in this scenario. China doesn't need PNG to sign a Security deal their Pacific ambitions aren't contingent on PNG. PNG are happy to take Australia's money.
