Just remembered not Saudi Arabia as strict Muslims its where most go to do their pilgrimage at the haj

I still think it exists in Saudi Arabia…plenty of money flowing with all that oil so where there is money then this goes with it …. More underground and less foreigners than Dubai but sure if you are in the know and have the money you will be accommodated

They won't have any problems getting players with the tax exemption. The 2 key target players profiles will be guys in their last few years getting a pay day and guy who are trying to crack a regular role in their preferred position. 2 players recently as a example are Ben Hunt and Cory Paix. Those demographics actually makes a good roster with a good blend experience and raw ambition. Throw in the fact that they're only there to play football .. a few Papauns playing for pride and you might just get the perfect ingredients for a highly competitive team.

I am still a but skeptical about the PNG team but more from a spectator point of view. There is little spectator evidence of sell out crowds.

If a "resort facility" was built near Port Moresby it certainly can alleviate some concerns however I still don't think any families are normally going there.

That said, if PNG were to target Pacifika players, especially Fijians but also others the location will be less of a problem and in actual fact, as many are providing for their wider families the attraction of an extra 30 - 40 percent in money would be huge and unlikely to be rejected.

As for name and colours, I actually think PNGRL should try and ensure the name and colours are actually a bit different to the Kumuls as it will inhibit the national brand.

Don't use "PNG" (that is the national brand')

Maybe use "Hunters"

Instead of red black and yellow, just use Black and Yellow (for instance).

This leaves room for two separate but powerful brands.

One specific to the NRL.

The other specific to international football.

Additionally, by subtly leaving PNG out of the official name, it opens to the door to support from Melanesian people's (Fiji, New Caledonia, central Pacific and even West Papua)

Nah, it's a PNG team

Qld cup players are stars in png

They would show up to watch any random league player that most people on the east coast would have no idea who he is

Sure the PNG locals may do that but the NRL itself needs marketable players in teams for their TV deals and the games here. Nobody is going to turn up to see PNG's NRL team in Sydney with a bunch of QLD Cup players and whatever NRL players PNG can get together.

No one is moving their family up there. They should develop a decent team though

But how? Great young players within an existing NRL set up are usually mentored by older players, coached by great coaches etc.

Will PNG even be able to attract an NRL standard coaching staff?

The 1 million he makes in AUS is taxed - be paid around 600k or so after tax
The 1.2 million he makes in PNG is tax free

Even if 1 million he will be paid 400k or so more per season in PNG Compared to AUS being tax exempt.

One assumes accommodation and meals etc will be provided and flights

I had read something about tax breaks but wasn't aware that it was 100% tax free, in that case it seems completely unfair that PNG has this kind of advantage because they could sign a key player for 1.2 million tax free which would be the equivalent of a 2 million dollar contract in Australia. They could sign current superstars of the game for 750k - 800k when other teams would need to pay 1.2 million or so for those same players.

That isn't even taking into account third party agreements and the like also which I imagine would also be tax free and easier to come by as a one nation team.

Oh but when Sydney Roosters get players on unders it's okay, but PNG getting one or two marquee to live in a 3rd world country getting paid overs, everyone has a meltdown, next time you bring up the salary cap ensure you don't be a hypocrite about it, you forget the stigma your and other Sydney based club have, on landing players, when teams like Canberra and Gold Coast need to really pay over due to the climate or fortunes they are as a club

This png team will more likely be made to of locals, i can see maybe 5-10 people (marquees and staff) only receive this tax break, not all will receive the tax brea,k, as ive read it only those who are Australian nationals, which might be similar to certain rosters that receive third parties, if Wayne Bennett makes it past his souths contract, he'll be the 1st guy up there, and we all know the tyres of guys he will recruit.
Also this tax break will only be there for the first few seasons, PVL mentioned its not something that will be there forever, it just to entice regular players to accept a contract in a developing country to start the ball rolling in the NRL

Don't want to really turn this into a Roosters thing but the Roosters haven't signed a big marquee player in years let alone got one for unders. Brandon Smith is probably the closest to a marquee player we've got in the past 4 seasons and I think you'd agree that on 850k a season we overpaid.

Admittedly yes it is more difficult for Canberra however I disagree with the Gold Coast, I think not a lot of players want to go to the Gold Coast due to the management of the team, a rookie coach (Until Hasler came along), not many great juniors and they've sucked on field for a very long time. I don't think it has much to do with the geographical location or anything like that, who wouldn't want to live on the Gold Coast?

With PNG even if it is for the first few seasons it still doesn't seem to be fair. For me personally if PNG came along and took Nathan Cleary off the Panthers (Just as an example) simply because PNG can offer incredible amounts of money that'd be really unfair on Penrith and they couldn't realistically compete with the offer. Why take 1.2 million from Penrith and walk with 750 -800k after tax when you can sign for 1.2 million for PNG and take all 1.2 million? An extra 400 - 450k in your account at the years end is hard to say no to regardless of how loyal or committed to staying in Australia you are.

I think what would have worked best is a marquee system not unlike what the A League soccer league does. PNG could've had 1 Australian marquee that gets the no tax salary up to a million dollars and a Papua New Guinea marquee slot that gets the no tax salary if eligible. That would allow the new PNG side to get themselves two marquee players with a slight advantage and allow them to sign the best PNG player available in the market

Well there is a lack of quality coaches across the board but coaches will be easier because they are older and have kids out of school etc.

Coaches and off field staff also pay zero tax

They already have multiple high calibre coaches lining up for jobs

2 cents: PNG could look into getting Gus on board to assist in setting up the club’s football operations (as a football manager for a year or two). Get Adrian Lam as inaugural coach and Lachlan Lam (who will be 30 by 2028) as one of the starting halves. There’s an established relationship already there between Phil and Adrian.

A key to their footy success would be to simplify the processes implemented within the club from the get-go. One or two chefs in the kitchen (FM & HC), keep the football department and management to a minimum and let the selected people do their job without external (commercial management) hindrance. They might be the most isolated team (from Sydney media) but they will equally also have the most scrutiny put on them (due to how they came about).

Unfortunately any perceived poor decision the club makes will be made out to be much bigger than it actually is.

At the end of the day to whom and by how much the PNG Gov`t give tax-breaks to is none of the NRL`s or Australian Govt`s business. They are a sovereign nation, they will make their own decisions, maybe this is the cost of having teams from other jurisdictions in our competition. You can`t have it both ways.
Countries all around the world have different business and personal income tax structures to give themselves a competitive advantage, sometimes more broadly and sometimes for specific industries, you could easily argue that the this is a classic case of a specific industry. Also note, some countries have zero income tax on businesses.
I have read elsewhere that NZ has lower income tax rates than Oz.

What a train wreck, the Aust Gov give 600 million while PNG give 50 million. Great idea this expansion team.

NRL seem hell bent on expansion just for the sake of it. How long did the Western Reds, the Adelaide Rams or Hunter Mariners last. The current comp is already International with the NZ Warriors, I see no need for PNG.

Gus is certainly not short of job opportunities…. But I don’t get vibes that setting up PNG will be one that he would consider too seriously …. Too much chance of failure…

there was a quote from some anonymous club CEO during the week who said if PVL had said no to PNG and walked away from $700 million, he would have been out on his backside within days …

Correct, it would have been madness to forgo the opportunity.

The guy benefiting most from this is the PNG PM. (And that includes the poor little png kids the peanut gallery cares so much for).
