Is that the first time the Irish times had talked about the nrl !

PNG nrl club a global phenom
Surprisingly I am a regular reader of the Irish Times, Irish Independent and RTÉ, mainly because I am interested in the politics. Union gets a lot of attention but League has the occasional mention. The Manly players rejecting the inclusive jerseys was probably the most recent event to get substantial coverage. Whenever Andy Farrell or other converts are mentioned their league origins are noted. The Irish team in the World Cup also gets some press.
Ireland union is growing in popularity and it could be fertile ground for a League push if someone had deep pockets.
AFLW gets a surprising amount of attention, mainly because half the teams are made up of Gaelic Football players.

Thats a great rule!

They function as a reserve grade (obviously) but they maintain a distinct image for the locals who give a shit. It doesnt hurt anyone and they dont just present as used up leftovers like the NSW cup does.

would it really be so hard for the NsW Cup clubs to come up with alternative names or use something historic?
This shows a horrifically bad understanding of the competition and its roots lol.

The premiership as it is today grew from the NSWRL Premiership which began in 1908. Most of the teams in NSW Cup are still in the NRL today, hence most clubs are just direct affiliates of their relevant NRL club. Others have signed agreements with a heritage club (Newtown-Sharks, Norths-Storm etc).

The four QLD NRL clubs were created as new entities so naturally, they're not going to have the identity of a QLD Cup club to fall back on.

Great article

PNG, nz and the pacific islands really should be the focus of the arlc over the next 20 years

That would give the game the platform to truly go global
Haha yeh some footprint in a few tiny pacific islands are going to launch a global movement for rugby league!

Could reach 4 times that population if they focused on France instead if global reach is the goal.

Eventually maybe but can’t have French teams in the nrl

That would be where super league can make a difference when the English game has money again
