Points Cap Instead of Salary Cap

This is an idea I had a few seasons back and I thought I would float it again.

Replace the salary cap with a points system. Players are given points based on rep duties, first grade games and finals experience, maybe even junior rep duties.

The beauty with this system is it allows the players to get paid more but still limits teams from trying to buy a competition.

Other aspects like players that have played all their junior football with one club would be on lower points for that club but higher elsewhere.

What is the response to this kind of system?

The clubs still won't be able to afford paying the players as much as some of them think they are worth.

Not really a feasible idea.

Who decides how many points a player is worth? How long does a player have to be down on form before their points worth is dropped? What if there is a disagreement of how many points a player is worth?

By allocating points to teams that play finals you are intentionally ripping apart teams for their success. How can a team plan for future seasons if the value of a players will fluctuate every season.

Rich clubs like the Broncos can outspend poor clubs like Cronulla by 3-to-1. Even though players may be classed as equal in points values (eg Bird, Lockyer have both played rep footy in the halves) wealthy clubs would purchase the higher quality 10 point players (Lockyer, Thurston, Inglis) while the poorer clubs would be stuck with the lesser 10 point players (Bird, Gallen, Toupu). High point players would take the view that they will either play for the Broncos for $1m a year or go overseas rather than play for Cronulla for $400k a year.

QLD and NZ teams would also require points relief due to smaller populations than NSW making it easier for local players to be awarded rep duties.

Not really your idea, this system is currently used in the Jim Beam Cup.

It's horrid.

It won't allow players to take a pay cut to play with a team they think might win a premiership.

It also forces players to leave clubs even when they might otherwise have found a way to squeeze themselves under the cap.

And it also rewards mediocrity far more than the current salary cap - and might actually affect who gets picked in rep teams.
For example, Stuart as Australian coach decides he doesn't want Bird in the Aus team because that'll keep 2 points free so they can sign playerX etc...

It's used in the local Central Coast comp as well.

A points system isn't as punishing to successful clubs as some are making out. Generally in a points system, some provision is made for players increasing in value so clubs that develop talent are rewarded, not punished.

e.g. Sharks sign X worth 2 points
X makes SOO, increases his value to 5 points.

As long as X stays with the Sharks, he will only count for 2 points under the cap. If X signs with, say Penrith, then X would count for 5 points under Penrith's cap.

A real life example, in the local Central Coast comp, local juniors are worth ZERO points (even if they have played for Australia).

The problem with a points system is that it's fairly arbitrary and adds a great deal of complexity for little gain.

I still think a cap on the side that is able to take the field makes the competation more even. That is, for any given game, the players that can take the field can only be to a certain value say $3.4 million.

I don't see clubs going over board to pay overs for reserve graders to hoard players whilst it would even up the teams on the current setup where by clubs like Bulldogs, Titans, Cowboys are being penalised for having significant numbers of players injured.

The current cap is fine if all players are fit but penalises clubs if they get a run of serious injury.

The proposal of having a game cap allows teams to better retain players and not lose them to other codes or overseas.

i think something like this should be looked into but points should be allocated by clubs based on how many different clubs want a particular player.

very roughly & with very little thought....

at the start every club summits thier top 10 teams, this enables the top x amount of players to be rated. the players are then auctioned off so the more finacially successful clubs will get 1st shot but still won't be able to buy a premiership (encourages clubs to find more money).

everytime a player comes off contract they go back into the pool to be re-valued.

reduction in points for juniors & long serving players etc, to encourage loyalty.

some system where you can't bid a players points up without having any intention of buying them, likewise clubs couldn't go for a player they didn't bid for in an attempt to keep the players points down.

i don't know. the salary cap is just a rort.

To answer some critics.

Without the salary cap clubs can have their own sponsors sponsor the players and save themselves some money. The points would be a system that is not based on form, purely the players achievements and this system I proposed before the Jim Beam Cup was using it and I don't really know much about that system. And lastly, we don't want to have players taking "pay cuts" to play for more successful clubs as this always looks like a rort.

I haven't detailed exactly how the system would work but things such as one team players and juniors playing for the senior club would be reduced points.

Just exempt all "local juniors" from the salary cap (and lower the cap for spending on outside players, except Melbourne obviously) = also, allow 3rd party agreements for local juniors.

Then clubs and sponsors would be channelling their $$$ into the grassroots... and clubs without juniors would have to move to where there are juniors to take control of (eg: Gosford), or a "new frontier" (Adelaide or Perth, free of cap restrictions).

*There would have to be clear criteria / guidelines on who qualifies as a local junior.

LOL @ this idea. Everyone knows the NSW team plays favourites when selecting from certain clubs.

Clubs like the Raiders will be left out in the cold due to selection bias and clubs like Newcastle will get an unfair advantage.

If you gave players points for rep duties then we'd have to appoint a non NRL coach,as weve seen this year players like Turner,Hoffman(no form)White(cat )would be picked because of there coach.I feel teams can't 'buy' comps anymore because of the cap.If any team can buy some of the best players and manage to fit them in while keeping some of the lesser known or workhorse players happy, then good luck to them.
