points from kicks

the game has become a lot more viewer friendly. not just the die hards are watching now nrl are attracting new viewers weekly.but a lot of tries are comming now from kicks in play just waiting for the winger or full back to fummble than the oppistion fall on the ball and try time well after waiting for the viedo refs call. i think down grading the points scored from a kick will see faster play
1. not as many viedo refs calls (not as vital decission)
2.more 6th tackel running options
3. more tactical kicks into goal to force a drop out oppose to the bomb all the time

Is this whole 'Take a subject that was on the Sunday Roast in '08, and comment on it, once a week' going to happen more frequently?

It was stupid then, and is stupid now. Go and ask your mother why she didn't swallow.

Although a good skill, this goes against what you are saying as it would make it less viewer friendly. After the ball is forced dead then we have to wait 2 minutes for the kicker to dropout. So we could be wasting 5-10 minutes a game very easily if this actually did happen.

So does this mean the Brent Tate try off that magical Jones chip' n 'chase should be worth less points?

worst idea to ever be said, ever. I don't believe people bring this up a couple of times a year. A try is a try.

A better idea would be to increase the tackle count to eight but ban kicks on the last two tackles.

Effectively that means you've got six tackles as you do now, but you get an extra two tackles if you're prepared to run the ball. Hopefully it might make kicking less attractive and keeping the ball alive more attractrive (and not just near the goal-line).

It's probably also worth extending the space where marks can be taken up to the 10 or 20 metre line. Plenty of teams aim their kicks just short of the goal-line in the hope they can then force the defender back into the in-goal area. Such a rule change would give defensive teams a reward (a 20m tap) for successfully diffusing a bomb in the field of play.

I tend to come from the school "a try is a try is a try" and "it's not how but how many". We should think of rule changes in general play that will discourage routine kicking before we go about tinkering with the scoring system.

I cannot see how this aids good attacking and attractive footy.

To limit what a team can do with the ball can only result in a lack of attraction. I love watching the lottery of a huge bomb, or the precision needed for a good grubber and good support not to mention a fullbacks ability to cover.

It ruins one of the fabrics of the game.

What happens if a bomb is put it up, batted back, passes through the hands and spread to the other side of the field with several cut out passes and a try is scored on the same play... is that considered a try off a 'kick' or a 'normal' try? If so then why? And if not then where do you draw the line?

Stupid to reduce the points from trys off kicks, running option on the last tackle will be too predictable and it will be harder to score 4 point trys, because the defense will be set for it knowing that sides arent going to put the bomb or a chip or little kick behind the defense line, leave it the way it is

I really want to see less points from Conversions/Penalty goals.

Make them either worth 1 pt or make a try worth six.

A team like the Cowboys with a great kicker such as Thurston will score 5 tries and most often have 30 pts for example, where as a team like the Tigers or Knights will have to score 6, sometimes 7 to be level with the cowboys.

It's annoying how just kicking a ball off a tee can be worth half a try? Kicking a ball from 10 meters away is worth half as much as a try with say 15 offloads, a magic cut-out pass and a great run through a gap to get over the line.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. It ain't broke. The bomb is the best part of the game imo.

Exactly, and what happens to the chips and chase 40 meters out, dumby and step around the fullback. This involves running but no passing, is it a try off a kick even thou the kick occurs 40 meters down field.

Fullbacks have to be good enough to field these types of kicks, that is their jobs. You will also not that is generally isn't the hail mary bombs that work. The bombs that are the most effective are the ones that land about on the try line and timed perfectly hight wise for attacking players.

The ability to pin point a defender and isolate him with a bomb is a difficult task, but then grubbers aswell with depth and type of bounce. Kicking isn't normally hit and miss, you can get lucky some times... but most of the time they take alot of skill and timing.

kicking is part of our game and should not be discouraged.

:crazy: What's a field goal then 1/2 a point. Or in your plan are they worth 2? Then we get more field goals less conversions. Get real! There are more tries from kicks these days because player's practice for hours. Keep the points the same. Why punish a team that has a good kicker, so a team with a sh*t kicker can have a better chance of winning in a close game. How about buying a decent kicker!
