Our F-18's are coming up to 30 years old. They are in dire need of replacing.

Correct. Malaysia and Indonesia have more dangerous fighters than us ffs. MALAYSIA AND INDONESIA. As a RAAF kid I fail to see the issue personally. It's not even necessarily a matter of defence. If you worked in a mine with obsolete equipment it'd be a fecking safety hazard. What about an obsolete rocket combustion system?

Same. My folks first house was $65k. I nearly cried when I heard that...

They're good enough for Top Gun, so they're good enough for us :sarcasm:

Stick it in the budget for public appraisal with a good report on why we need them, show a staged changeover and staggered payment (how about $12b per year for four and a half years and phase them in over that time), identify what we're going to do to pay for them etc etc.

I have no doubt the planes need replacing. Its the fact Tony is crying foul while he swipes the nations credit card for the new planes.

Oh Derpsta. Top Gun was Tomcats not Hornets!

Again, its not the buying of them I have an issue with. Its the fact he swiped the card while proclaiming 'We have no money! We need a new tax!'

Its just ludicrous.

 f**k off, I haven't seen the movie sober. Ever. I'm lucky to remember Tom Cruise is in it

There is a middle ground. You don't need to go from a clunky Volvo to a Ferrari. Maybe you settle for a decent new Ford. Most european countries aren't touching the JSF. We don't have to go with this plane, and we don't have to buy that many.

In the end a small country building a military to try and take on a superpower is absolute madness. And if we're not trying to take on a superpower we don't need to buy more JSF than any other customer on the planet.

If we want to finish the asian century as an independent and free country a military buildup is not the way to go. Developing our economic and trade links with Asia is the way to go. In 2050 if China wants us they'll have us. The only way to stop that is not through fighting a war but convincing them having us as a friend is better than colonising us.

You do realise that we're not actually buying top of the market? What do you think, you can pick up a nice sensible strike fighter with a few miles on it and get change from 100k?

You and Drew are also forgetting the ridiculous aircraft carrier/LHD hybrids the previous government laid down. Did you think you can outfit them with a few Cessnas and an ageing but plucky cropduster held together with duct tape and love?

So essentially you have an issue with a politician....being a politician? Well so do I, they all stink. But what are you gonna do?

Both sides of politics believe this is the right purchase, various labor minister have been quoted as saying as such, regardless of whom was in power, the JSF was going to be bought in those numbers.

Its not.

Health insurance is $270 a month, cars are $140 a month (we both need them for travel to work), internet is $80, mobiles are $140, rent is $1800, fuel is about $250, food is probably $500 - $700, Eelctricity is $150 a month - that equates to $3500ish. $80k a year is about $4200 a month. So you've got $700 a month to 'play' with on things like clothes, additional unforseen expenses, entertainment and the like.

You got nothing to put in the bank as savings afterwards. Its shit. And we don't live an extravagent lifestyle either. We have no TV, we have small, older cars, we have no expensive hobbies etc...

With a kid, that $700 gets sucked out pretty quickly.

Call me out on this. But part of the reason I'm busting my ass off studying is so one day, I can eventually land a career that has a strong pay. (Medical field)

This will allow such issue (and cost of living) to be more affordable as I'll have access to higher pay and more incentives. Just to help make life that little bit easier down the track.

I'm also pretty lucky in the sense my family own a few properties that in a few years, will bring extra income towards me and my brother (As we do own them).

It's not getting any easier to live, but if I can change it now while I'm still young, in the end, it will pay off. My student loan is copping never ending debt, but hopefully, when it pays off, it won't be as bad.

A debt tax is absurd. We've cleared debts before without requiring a debt tax. What this is, simply, is unimaginative policy to fix an issue that isn't anywhere near as bad as is being made out.

Which party increased the debt ceiling?

This Liberal party is behaving more like a labor party, fiscally.

Abbott said in 2011 "no country has ever taxed itself into prosperity" but he's going to try & tax us out of debt & into prosperity. He's a merkin version of David Copperfield

Furthermore, the difference between 80k & 55k salary is one pays a shitload more income tax. They both take home a similar amount of money.

The funniest part is the whole "no new taxes in the first term" promise that was a key cornerstone to his election campaign.

Gets elected, first budget, new tax.

Gets questioned about breaking a key promise and his reply is, "this is not a tax, it's a levy."

Lol. Typical politician. More spin than a bus full of Indian cricketers. Pollies are all full of shit. All they ever seem to do is paint themselves into a corner and then bullshit their way out of it again.

Well that's a load of shit.

Someone making 55k/year is in the same tax bracket as someone making 80k/year.

http://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/I...come-tax-you-pay/Individual-income-tax-rates/

Someone earning 55k/year takes home $45,580/year whilst someone earning 80k/year takes home $62,450/year.

On the net amount someone earning 80k/year (62,450 after tax) is in the top 0.55% of world income whilst someone earning 55k/year is in the top 1.28%.

the dilemma you have in comparing these amounts to the world population is our cost of living is higher..

hell, most of us would live like kings if we kept our annual income and even moved somewhere like fiji...

Agree. This is the frustrating bit. He butchered Labor, with the aid of Murdoch papers, and got in on promises he has ended up breaking.

What is worse, is the Labor gov copped an absolute (and often warranted) caning from the media for their backtracking. Liberals? Murdoch has gone predictably quiet and there's no calls for his head from News papers.

I have never hated a man like I hate Murdoch and his papers.

Yep. Saw this posted on my FB and it summed it up pretty much:

Since a few of us are caught in the death throws of man flu right now, I thought it would be good to get people educated on the topic.

A Godly, kind man you are SGL. Bless you.

This is misguided because...

hell, most of us would live like kings if we kept our annual income and even moved somewhere like fiji...

... of what muzzers said. Yes. We have more money. But we spend more money.

Wife and I lived on $18k AUD for an entire year in Tonga. We didn't live like kings either, but we were comparitively well off to the rest of the population.

Here, $80k lumps you in with many others in similar fiscal difficulties. Unfortunately, your stats are relative.

Funnily enough, the discussion is more mature here

That's cause we're intelligent and willing to listen to each other :) I genuinely enjoy when these chats come up in here. It always challenges and informs me.
