Minichiello, by the time his career is over, will go down as one of the all-time great fullbacks, IMO
He's just so consistantly brilliant, and still improving.

Best fullback in years

By DEAN RITCHIE in Hull

November 21, 2005

KANGAROO Anthony Minichiello was yesterday rated the best fullback in 20 years after inspiring Australia to a 26-14 win over Great Britain and thrusting his country into rugby league's Tri-Nations final.

Don't argue...Brent Tate about to put a fend on Great Britain's Leon Price. Picture: AP.

Minichiello was again brilliant in a four-try- to-two win that ended Great Britain's tournament and put Australia into the decider against New Zealand next Sunday morning (AEST) at Elland Road, Leeds.

The Kangaroos played under enormous pressure – aware a loss of eight points or more would end their campaign – but yet again defeated the Lions, the victory being Australia's 10th in their past 11 matches against the British.

And it was Minichiello who busted tackles, was positioned perfectly all game and was superb with kick-returns.

Australia's assistant coach and Melbourne Storm mentor Craig Bellamy said Minichiello now deserved to be rated among the game's greatest-ever fullbacks.

"He is the best fullback in the past 20 years," Bellamy said. "Anthony is entitled to be rated right up there with the best. He is just so consistent.

"One of my favourite fullbacks was Graeme Langlands. Darren Lockyer is also a great player, there was Graham Eadie, Gary Belcher, Garry Jack. Minichiello is close to them.

"He's entitled to be right up there and certainly deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those players."

Australian five-eighth Trent Barrett added: "He's one of the best fullbacks I've played with.

"He just never drops the ball."

Test captain Danny Buderus praised his fullback's performance.

"He does everything 100 miles an hour," Buderus said.

Minichiello was delighted with his performance.

"I felt comfortable out there," he said. "As a team we can play better. It was a good win but there's still one match to go."

Mini is a great fullback and had a great tour!

But Locky will still remain the greatest fullback in my eyes! Gary Belcher and Jary Jack were also great fullbacks in there time, but Locky changed the roll of fullback to an attacking and play making roll!

So Langlands wasnt an attacking fullback? There were attacking fulbacks before Darren Lockyer, its just that you may not have seen them play.

that was a great vintage of rugby league fullbacks. Let's not forget players like Eadie, Les Johns, Russell Fairfax (who could have been anything except for injuries) and Beltcher would hurt you in attack. If you think LOckyer was the first of running fullbacks then you haven't seen much football

He wasn't the first of the "running fullbacks". But how many others could do what he did? His kicks, passes ect? Lockyer at Fullback had it all and the attack of a 6 to go with it.

Lockyer hasn't changed anything, he (was) just good at what he did. Lol, Lockyer was far from the first running/attacking fullback, which dribbler thought that up?

Lockyer was a rare breed of fullbacks though. He could organise the attacking raids and was like a extra no. 6.

Minicehllo has a lot of good qualities about him especially his breakin tackle ability and his speed. But he just dosn't have "it" that players like Lockyer had/have or players like Bowen and Benji have now.

Firstly, Minicello is at least twice as good as Bowen, "it" or not. It's basically insulting to read Bowen being compared to Minicello.

I don't see what's so rare about Lockyer's style of play. As far as I see it, every fullback eithers falls into the Lockyer or Minicello mould of fullback, either having the skills as a playmaker or being exceptionally good at running. Locky was far from the first, and he certainly won't be the last, of his type. He was an excellent player @ 1 though.

Lockyer fell into both catergories. He could return the ball as a running fullback without much problem as well as a role as a play maker. Thats what made Lockyer so good in the number 1, he wasn't one style or the other, he was both.

Get over yourself......Hodgsons not far behind Minichello.

f**king hell, how quickly have people forgotten what Lockyer could do from fullback?

Absolutely stunning. Other fullbacks have brilliant attack, but usually they are busting the line themselves. The brilliant thing about Lockyer was his ability to create attack from the back, rather than just break the line like Minichello. I can't believe what I'm reading about him not being one of a kind. There hasn't been a fullback like him in the 15 years i've been watching the game. Name me another fullback who was the teams number 1 kicker in general play?

hodgson has a while to go yet to be right behind mini.
For a start hodgson has to be consistent and match 2005 in 2006.
Mini is seen as great as he is consistent. Sterlo said it best on the coverage yesterday, mini is highly consistent and they are no drop offs.
Hodgson has to do the same for the next 3-4 yrs.
Hodgson had a good 2002, but dropped off towards the end. In 2003 he went down the bottom. 2004 he came back well and 2005 he was very very good. But. One great season doesnt make a career.
