how do you rate his captaincy? Ever since he has taken over the jopb from steve waugh, I havn't been impressed.

He has the best team in the world and is a captain that is to defensive IMO. Some of his decisions have been unusual and his field placements at times can be very negative.

what do you think of his contribution as captain.

he has made some weird calls

and often on the field (well it appears that way), he acts like a pork chop with the umpires.

To be honest, he still has a way to go to be admired as a captain along the likes of Allan Border, Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh

Personally I would have had Gilchrist as captain, and Id say Gilly will retire in a year or so, then Punter would have been better suited to slot in as captain.

Michael Hussey wouldnt be bad as captain, but it wouldnt be good ettiquette to appoint him now would it?

At times i have wondered.

I say records speak for themself.

His declaration yesterday cant be called defensive.

I guess he puts faith in the great team he leads.

To be batting like he has for a while and juggle captaincy as well - he is doing well.

I think he is improving at the moment. He is only in his first few years as captain, so I'm prepared to give him a bit of time, as long as i can see some improvement. How he has captained this Ashes compared to 2005, you can see a big improvement.

I love the Gilly man - but too keep wicket, captain and score runs is a lot on ones shoulders.

But then again - he has powers so nothing is impossible.

just like the way he led Australia in India for a series win for the first time in 30 odd years ;-)

Thus far, not that impressed.

His does lead by example with batting - huge plus.

His choice of bowlers at times - average.

His place on the selection panel - huge minus.

His field placings- average.

The fact he seems to learn from his mistakes- huge plus.

I await to see how he deals with young ones, could be good or bad.

A really good captain, leaves an impression on those he leaves behind once he retires.

Either way Ricky will be remember by myself as a truly great batsmen, hopefully a good or great captain.

I didnt put it in as i knew someone would bite - remember his batting suffered? I think from memory he also elevated himself.

His keeping in that heat - and captaincy took its toll. He is a legend IMO, but its too much IMO to do all 3.

yer, Fleming said his captaincy was crap for the first few years of his reign.

He is OK, but the real test comes without Pidg and the great man. You still gotta get 20 wickets, and the skipper will be vital without those two.

with the team you've got (and had) you don't really need a decent captain - and haven't really had one since Taylor IMO.

If and when the veterans (McGrath, Warne, Hayden, Langer and Gilchrist) retire, you'll get a clearer indication of Ponting's captaincy abilities.

Agreed there, but he'll improve with Hussey in the side. Cameron White is the best skipper we have in Australia and he is nowhere near a test spot.

Gilly scored a hundred from 3, from memory. So how exactly did his batting suffer again?

Strange view to me, Tubby was an reasonable captain, defensive, conservative. S Waugh with virtualy the same team got MUCH better results. Not sure why people rate Tubby as a captain. Border I rate higher than both, as he set the tone for our period of domination.

Awesome slipper though.

My record would be good if I was the captain of this side.

As said by someone earlier, the true measure of his captaincy will be when Mgrath, warne, Gilly Langer and hayden retire.

Ponting isn't or has never been captain material in the true sense, but that's not his fault. Nor was Steve Waugh. Last real captain in the genuine sense we had was Taylor.

Border certainly turned into a very good captain - the best Australian captain I've seen.

Waugh had a better team than Taylor, not through his captaincy but through the development of the players. I'm a huge Steve Waugh fan, but he also was a very very ordinary captain. I think Taylor was more flexible, out and out aggression is not always the best approach, and it cost and nearly cost Waugh a few tests. Ponting is perhaps more flexible, but there seems to be no sense to many of his decisions, he gets defensive when it seems obvious he should attack, and vice versa...

If he wins every game by an innings and 500 runs, he still has to win the same amount of games to win the series, and it doesn't make the series won any faster. As long as he wins the games, I don't care

First captain in twenty years to lose the ashes - point taken.

Is it his fault that the whole team dropped half a dozen catches an innings, if we held onto our catches last series, we would of won, simple.
