Back in 2016/17 we had this guy as our defensive coach

Not sure of the reason he left it may have been the cost cutting but since he left the defence as been average at best. Other than the roosters game it's been the reason for all our losses this year.
Even when we smash some merkin we are the last up. Have a look at the 3rd player in around the legs and watch him fall off as the attacker drives forward.
How many offloads are there when the player seems to have been wrapped up?
Ever notice how many players are behind the dummy half and not in the defensive line?
Peni, Manu & Marata are classics for this then they wander back on side.
Teams are just getting a roll on us and momentum gets penalties.
I'd love to know the stats for back to back tackling this year let alone back to back to back.
Fix this and game will become a lot easier

Yep, our whole tackling and wrestling technique is shit.

It's kinda 6 of one, half dozen of other at moment though, cause we need Paulo in the team to cover Alvaro's attack
That's not how attack works. In attack a couple of blokes are central to the gameplan. Nobody needs to 'cover' for the ones who aren't. They just need to take the shit runs and stay out of the way (or run decoys) when the key players get the ball.

Agree our defence (linespeed, tackle effectiveness, wrestle) is poor. Kidwell is obviously not the answer.

Still can't process the errors from Gennings. We were one try away from breaking them!

If he’s in the team for his work rate (which I agree he probably is) then why the f**k did they beef him up into a slug? Generally ur workers are smaller
Probably expecting the rules to continue to be interpreted like last year. Anyway, it's easy to lose weight during the season, provided you don't get a lower body injury. Gaining weight during the season is the hard bit. Gaining muscle, anyway

There is 100m you need to cover in attack. Your key players get the ball in situations they can exploit. Every other time you need the others to make as many metres as possible in order to get into position for your key attacking players to capitalise. Alvaro isn’t making those metres sufficiently. Because he is covering Paulo in defence. Who isn’t defending sufficiently. Because he has to be more effective in attack. Because Alvaro isn’t making... and so on and so on.

Gennings has been a dumb footballer his whole career. Even last year when he was awarded our best back he still had a lot of dumb shit in him. I don't know why we keep re-signing dumb footballers.
Because they're cheaper. We could have a smart team but then they'd lack in other areas. At least with dumb footy players you can give them a simpler game plan.

I wonder if they have decided to get Alvaro lighter. 10 weeks in and I haven't noticed a change. He still looks cumbersome and slow

possession
eels 42% cowboys 58%

tackles
eels 400 cowboys 287 (Reed 61)

missed tackles
eels 29 cowboys 12

penalties received
eels 5 cowboys 9

tackle breaks
eels 12 cowboys 29

errors
eels 12 cowboys 8
Line breaks 3 each. And the Eels actually won the LBAs 3 to 2. I'm starting to rethink the importance of it as a stat tbh

Agree

Very different player to last year, .he was tackling and hitting the ball up with venom, regardless how crap were were going, was probably the only light to our 2018 season (and Hayne at the backend) the extra weight may be his downfall

Dumb footballers can't even follow a simple game plan.

BA: George, first game back, get the simple things right. Make your carries and hold the ball.

Gennings: No

Very half arse press conference from Brad. He should send someone else out to do them who has some passion. You can see where the playing group get their half arsedness,

Thank God I didn’t watch the game. Had a great night out. Just saw the highlights and there’s a reason why we will contend for the spoon again this season and that because of all the reserve grade players we still have in the team, Taka, Jennings, Hoffman etc etc substandard
