Manly have a guy who owns a security Co with the team on all away games, he goes to the clubs with them and heards them all onto a bus when they've had enough and drops them at the hotel where he himself stay's.

AFAIK They must stay together at all times, and are not allowed to go to seperate premises, and after games in Sydney they are allowed to go back to the Northern Beaches and party but must not go back into the City on game nights.

I would have thought that after Coffs Harbour.

I would have thought that after the 04 State of Origin.

But nothing's changed.

What were the penalties for those incidents? Were there any at all? Gasnier, Mini and Wing got dumped for a week, don't know what they got fined if at all. Slaps on the wrist, missing out on a game against much lower teams on the ladder, I'm sure that taught them.

Harsher penalties is all thats needed.

How many teams had the sh*t scared out of them after the Dogs salary cap scandal and with what happened to them? 14 I'd say, same needs to be done here. The NRL needs to impliment HEAVY fines for clubs, HEAVY fines and suspesions for players. Lets see the NRL scare this sh*t out every single player in the NRL with the next incident.

Mark Gasnier got fined $50K by our club and was suspended for 2 matches on top of missing out on State of Origin for that match.

He was fined the total the 12 Newcastle players were fined. He sent a bloody voice message over the phone, yet these newcastle clowns have done worse and copped $50K between them. Yes 1 has had his contract torn up and rightly so. Can't help but think that either Gasnier got punished too hard or the Newcastle players got off to cheaply. I think that the later applies here.

I agree with KFC, and think a drinking ban should be in force from the trials right up until full time of the Grand Final, or whenever your side is knocked out.
If they can't go for 7 months without alcohol then they have problems.
Alcohol would not be good for them anyway, these guys train their backsides off to stay in top shape, drinking goes against all of that hard work.

To be fair, most of those from Newcastle are shit Premier League players who would only be on $45k.

Gasnier was fined $50,000 AFAIK. Which was probably 20% of his yearly salary (that's conjecture). I think being fined 1/5th of your salary is a pretty tough lesson to learn. If you were on $30K a year, how would you enjoy being hit for $6000? You wouldn't do it again I bet.

I think the problem is how much responsibility the media is placing on the NRL as an organisation. There's what... nearly 400 top-tier players in the competition, a lot of which are young, and many of which are making a good living out of the game. Of course there are going to be potential bad apples in there! And there's no way that's the fault of the NRL, or the individual clubs. All they can be expected to do is punish any behaviour or similar that defames the game.

These guys have to be allowed to live their lives. If they are shielded, protected from the public or whatever for their entire adult lives, of course they won't know how to behave in society. As an individual, you live and you learn. If you screw up, you pay the price. If a player screws up, he can expect to pay the price and that's it.

We as fans have the right to live our lives freely. Why shouldn't the players be afforded the same rights?

Not only is this idea of an alcohol ban ridiculous (and unfair to those that drink and behave wisely) but it would be almost impossible to police such a ban, what are they going to do, go to a player's house and raid his fridge?..........What a Joke, the person that came up with this and those that agree need a stiff reagan style uppercut...

Those Newcastle players (Tilse aside) were bashed with a limp feather. $4,000 to most of those players is short change.

The NRL must consider a blanket alcohol ban on every player contracted to its clubs.

The difference between most 1st graders and the rest of us is that they are much better at playing football than we are.

What were you like as a young bloke in your first paying job? Home before midnight every night? Never got on the piss badly one night and rocked up to work the next day under the weather or still pissed?

I think we are holding these guys up to too high of a standard, for the most part they are just normal blokes who are bloody good at footy, nothing more. I'm not saying nothing should have been done but having a blanket ban on alcohol is not practical nor is it moral

Why should a clean living family bloke who plays first grade be at risk of losing his career because of some other louts acting like idiots who are employed to do the same job? If one 100 council workers ended up in drunken incidents should the rest of them be banned from alcohol? If someone else employed as the same job description you gets in the shit why should you pay for it?

Fine the arse out of the club for bringing the game into disrepute, let the club deal with it's players and the rest can get on with staying out of trouble and enjoying the odd drink or 10.

Alcohol makes you do things you wouldn't normaly do sober, right? and if you've never felt like chewing your arm off then I guess you won't know what I mean...BUT....

I can't for the life of me understand how dumb some of these guy's are after it was spelt out by the NRL+The Bulldogs incident ect... let alone the fact that if you do that kind of thing however smashed you are and whoever you are, your going to become a "person of interest" down at your local Police Station..

What don't these guys get?Is it a pack mentality thing? Or do they still think they're above the law because they play footy?

Its just a simple matter of respecting someones space and knowing your rights from your wrongs regarding the opposite sex. Anything other than that is aggrevated sexual assault or rape!! Unfortunately this sets up a bad predicament for players in situations where the female may be the aggressor and unless things go her way she might cry "wolf"

This is why NRL football players and there peers must get a clue... and get it fast otherwise these situations will continue. Most people just don't behave this way so why ban alcohol?

There should be no room in society let alone our sport for these fools and this is what they must bring across.

 well said. look at the end of the day their ADULTS (at least most of them legally are). You cant ban them from doing things cos a couple of f**kwits play up. Next people will want a sex ban so they dont accidentally screw the wrong person.....

if they play up and do illegal things than throw the book at them, however i dont see why those who dont get into trouble (which would prob be the majority) are penalised for the minority of f**kwits

Bag me as much as you like.

The fact remains that Rugby League has serious problems with player behaviour. And all of it stems from over indulgence in alcohol.

When was the last time a player displayed inappropriate and offensive behavior when sober?

They don't represent the rest of Australia, that's the point!

From an early age these guys are told they're better than anyone else.

They're gifted, they're gonna make it all the way to the NRL.

Those kids that do make it are then given big fat contracts and have no other obligation in life than to prepare for and play football.

Everything comes easy, money, women and if they've got a problem either their club or manager sorts it out for them.

Then when they're let off the leash and given a drink they have no concept of the word NO because it's something they've rarely heard.

I'm making an assumption MR Angry but I've slapped more piss than you can imagine in my 20 year career and I have never sexually harrassed a woman. And no I'm not a nice person, not that there's anything wrong with that.

thats crap.

I've seen the desperate tarts that these guys often have to put with on their rare occassions out & about. Women , quality women don't come around too easy for all of them.
I would bet any other guy the same age has more experience on the street than these guys.
