Promotion of Rugby League

Tonight's nine viewing schedule (Broncos/Dragons and Wallabies/Ireland) made it very obvious as to which code is the superior product.
First up, we saw a clash of the defending premiers vs a team on the rise. Both teams were very much up for the occasion and were skilful, gritty and brave. The passion and skills players like Brett Morris and Darren Lockyer possess make our game the product it is. Both teams were ultra fit and should be proud of their performances. The score may not have been huge, but both sides had a go and threw the ball around for skilful attacking plays.

Compare that spectacle to the crap dished up on the other side of the ditch. Knock-on's galore, no team dared to throw the ball around, no team had great structure in attack....the list goes on. While those Irish players looked like total amatuers fitness-wise, they were still superior to our so-called world cup contenders. Sadd thing to say, but the games I've enjoyed the most have been the minnow v minnow games. They actually throw the ball around like a rugby league game. The Tonga v Canada game was by far the best game (only good game) I've seen this cup. But, players from both teams were still pretty crap with heaps of errors.

How this product gets so much more attention than rugby league defies belief. Our product is so much better in every way than union. At least, I can understand why afl is a popular product. Their game has end-to-end activity with great skills in traffic plus the atheltes have to be extremely fit. But, I just don't get why union get more attention in every other country in the world.

That is leagues main problem. I think too many foreigners confuse our product with that slow kick and clap crap. That just puts people off as it gets more airtime than league worldwide.

Our promotion of league simply needs to get better. We are so meek compared to the afl and union promotion machines who try to shove their products down our throats. We somehow need to get much more aggressive in promoting our game.

then why does Quade Cooper keep getting mentioned as a potential league player? Furthermore, how does a game such as the one Engine described get 58000 ppl at Eden Park?

Because contrary to popular belief on this forum, some people actually like rugby and travel half way around the world to watch their team play and don't mind shelling out $200 for a ticket and $7.50 for a beer.

First question, the only good thing about Quade Cooper is that he is quick and evasive.
He has no idea about f**king structure, average kicking game, no composure in tough situations and pisspoor defence. Some pundits compare him to Benji Marshall. Benji kills him in every way. Benji is regarded as one of leagues weaker defenders, yet is a defensive machine compared to Quade Cooper.

Second question, because they kick our ass when it comes to selling their game.

Would you have preffered the game at 8:30 like last week when Manly fans couldn't get to the game because it was too late to get home. Can't have it both ways. 6:30 is perfectly reasonable given it's a saturday night. Both games started at the exact same time given the time difference between Australia and NZ. A complete rant for no reason. I think you are Phil Rothfield.

Im not complaining about the tv scheduling you goose. Im complaining about our failure to properly promote our game in general in comparison to other codes. No problems with the tv sheduling whatsoever.

Whatever. Rugby Union World Cups last for 6 weeks every 4 years. The NRL competition runs for 30 weeks every single year. Are you really surprised that RU might just command a bit of an extra bit of an attention? FFS, you're making a big deal out of nothing. You can't compare the two you goose.

I like both sports and watched both games. I preferred Australia vs Ireland but then again I am an All Blacks and Dragons supporters. I think that people on this forum have to realise that while they may like league more than union others don't share their view. That would be the same with or without promotion.

Two different codes, with different rule books, different sets of supporters (with quite a lot of overlap, particularly in New Zealand and Australia), vastly different international footprints, and different objectives.

Both codes could learn quite a lot from the other. RU's promotion of the game internationally, not only the World Cup, but Lions tours, the Sevens circuit (and the Commonwealth and Olympic tournaments) is the main reason that games like last night's draw the crowds and the international media interest that they do.

what a farce
what a disgrace ..... I don't give a cr@p how or why they went
yawnion & its awful world cup was very revealing in the most embarrasing manner again last night ... its stars shown up as imposters in the entertainment world when compared to the NRL's stars & that classic put on last night for its fans
yawnion world cup players should be part of the medical fraternity researching a cure for insomnia .... I think they've nearly got it based on last night :lol::lol:;-)

Bollocks if I want to see Ireland v Australia kick for goals then I would of watched Gaelic Football or Aussie Rules or the Hybrid shite.
I want to see tries.

Union has been serving the same 5h1t for 100 years+ and people still follow it and turn up in big numbers. Just goes to prove how stupid the masses are!

Agree though some promotion wouldn't go a miss and reclaiming of the "rugby" (sic) as well. Most non RL fans see Rugby and think Union, we have allowed that to happen and describe our games as Superleague or NRL depending on where you are.

As long as League has "Friends" like 9 and NEWS LTD whose main game seems to be keeping League in what they think is its place,we will have promotion problems.
This weekend 9 could have shown the games Australia wide on the main channel in NSW and QLD and one of the digital channels in the South.
But this is apparently beyond the capacity of the NRL or 9 to apply for an exemption to do this,we are being cruled by an ATM incompetent admin, and a FTA TV channel 9 you would not watch if they paid you apart from RL.

The talking point in New Zealand yesterday was not the World Cup or the All Blacks. Instead the Warriors NRL team had suddenly become the Shaky Isles' favourite team, following their extraordinary finals win over the Tigers on Friday night. R&M yesterday morning had the pleasure of spending two hours on New Zealand radio's top rating sports show - The Dugout, which is hosted by the legendary Doug Golightly - and all every caller and sporting identity wanted to talk about was the Warriors. They all laughed off the All Blacks' ''training run'' against Japan, arguing the Warriors were instead the team that appealed to them because they were a bunch of good blokes. The ''Mad Butcher'', Sir Peter Leitch, called in to eulogise the team, as did German rugby identity Helmut Wasching whose message was simple: ''Go, the Warriors.'' It was certainly a relief from all the paranoia, fear and loathing surrounding the All Blacks team.

So don't watch. By the way, Australia bombed several try opportunities. Two extra defenders do get in the way of try attacks, sometimes. Plus contested scrums, and contested breakdowns, result in penalisable offenses.

I suppose one answer would be to take two players from each team, change the breakdown law so that there is no contest, and discourage contested scrummaging. I am pretty sure that is not going to happen in my lifetime. Best of luck in yours, however.

In the meantime, exercise your right to switch channels. Lots of people do, in many countries, some tune in to RUWC, some tune out. The IRB just counts the dollars.
