Proposed Changes To 2012 Schedule

Ok, there's no perfect solution, but this sounds like a step in the right direction....( I agree with Anthony Griffin that SOO & NRL games need to be totally separated )

The NRL has taken a major step towards easing the burden on the game's elite players by opening talks with broadcasters over a revised schedule for 2012 which would result in the introduction of a stand-alone representative weekend.

Proposed Schedule Changes

  • Season will start a week early 31-week season
  • Mid-season Test match and City-Country will be played on a standalone weekend on April 20-22
  • State of Origin games will remain on Wednesday nights
  • Only one game will be played on Friday nights after Origin
  • Clubs with traditionally high Origin representation, such as Brisbane Broncos and St George Illawarra, will not feature on those Friday nights
  • Indigenous All Stars game will move back to February 4

After a week dominated by renewed complaints over the taxing demands of the representative season, the NRL held talks with Fox Sports yesterday to gauge their reaction to the proposed schedule changes for next season.
Officials will meet Channel Nine executives next week. Under the revised plan, devised by NRL football operations manager Nathan McGuirk in consultation with the clubs, the season would begin a week early to accommodate a stand-alone weekend featuring a Test between Australia and New Zealand and the traditional City-Country game.
State of Origin games would continue to be played on Wednesday nights but crucially only one Friday night game would follow those matches, rather than the existing two. The NRL will also move to ensure the selected Friday night game does not include any sides with a traditionally high number of Origin players.

It means the likes of Brisbane, Melbourne and St George Illawarra would be spared from playing only two days after an Origin game. The changes need to be rubber-stamped by the game's broadcasters, but NRL officials are optimistic they can strike a deal which would provide some relief to leading players.
"Everyone needs to accept that we have three successful levels of football and that's something the other codes can't do, but a consequence of that is that it presents some challenges and despite people wanting a perfect solution, there isn't one," Gallop said.
"Season 2012 presents a unique opportunity with Anzac Day falling on a Wednesday, we can have a stand-alone Test and City-Country weekend prior to Anzac Day. But we would need the broadcasters to buy into that."
While the proposal is only in its infancy, it received mixed reviews yesterday. Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin, whose club had five players in the May 6 Test and four in Origin I, backed the plan but warned it did not go far enough.
"Obviously anything that helps reduce the workload on the players, or increases their recovery time, we'd be in favour of," Griffin said. "But even with a Friday night off after a Wednesday Origin, they'd have to play Saturday or Sunday so it's still two games in a week for the best players in the game.
"It's a help and I don't want to be sound negative about it. But at some stage we'll be taking back ownership of the game with the independent commission."
Griffin said if Friday night was the huge TV ratings winner, then it should host Origin with no NRL club games that weekend.
"Ideally I'd like to see where the Origin and NRL matches are separated because I think they deserve to be rather than cluttered on top of each other," he said.
Rugby League Professionals Association (RLPA) chief executive David Garnsey endorsed the decision to play the Test and City-Country on a stand-alone weekend, but said the remaining changes did nothing to solve the game's major problem.
In that regard, the NRL is hamstrung to an extent by existing broadcast contracts. However, all bets are off when talks begin for a new deal from 2013. "My reaction to the move that has been suggested is that it doesn't cure the problems that have been identified," Garnsey said. "It's not going to solve the burn-out issue."
Meanwhile, Gallop said the idea of clubs reaching a unified stance on the game's big issues was an admirable goal, but stressed it would be difficult to achieve.
The Australian revealed yesterday that the clubs were pushing for a summit to be held to achieve consensus on issues such as broadcasting rights, season structure and expansion. A meeting of club officials is scheduled for next month, but Gallop conceded it could be brought forward to discuss the game's big-ticket items.
"We definitely plan to discuss these issues at a meeting in July," he said. "It's not clear whether there is a need to bring it forward, but everyone has plenty of opportunities to put forward ideas. A unified approach is a great goal, but a difficult one to achieve."

So in other words, Brisbane and Melbourne have byes before two origin game, and also get guaranteed not to play the Friday night game following Origin...

Typical.

All seems fair enough.

One stand alone weekend for the test & city origin wont hurt the NRL that much.

And it could help make the test a more important fixture on the calendar.

Maybe if your team had better coaching for players, you might actually produce talent instead of waiting for Storm and Brisbane to release champion players then always turn duds when they get to inferior teams.

That has nothing to do with it. Is it fair that my side is made even worse by the fact we are missing our two Origin players and we face Parramatta missing no one?

Origin should be stand alone weekend so no team benefits or is disadvantaged.

All players will back up, just some teams that traditionally produce more players will have perhaps 2 days more to recover. But they still back up that week end.

yeah its a scam cos we really should be giving the byes instead to clubs with 1 or 2 rep players

clubs like canberra and the sharks are obviously the hardest hit by origin

I'd like to see more Internationals, but i guess the NRL/ARL/IRL/ERL or whoever have given up on them. Sad.

For christs sake, read my point above.

Either way you are giving one side and advantage... The fairest way is to have Origin on a stand alone weekend... I'm sure the Players would love to have guaranteed rest.

They'll never be 3 standalone weekends. Channel 9 and Fox would have a heart attack. I'm surprised we were able to get even 1 of them.

The Test weekend with city country opens up a nice (albeit brief) window for internationals. There's only 2 games that weekend so why not play some other matchups? Fans and broadcasters would be keen for some more footy that weekend. Tonga v Samoa for instance has attracted publicity in the past. Then we could have PNG v Fiji, England could play their annual match against France at the same time so the likes of Burgess and Ellis don't miss out on their club games like they did last year. I know realistically most Australian fans are more interested in club football but if all clubs have the weekend off why not do it? A lot of the island players are first grade standard but change allegiance to Aus or NZ for lack of quality game time. So we can satisfy demands for the international game and cultivate interest and satisfy the demands of fans and the media at the same time.

Good changes.

I don't see what the trouble is. Players can always withdraw from games if they're not up to backing up.

The most ridiculous thing about this years draw was that the weekend of the test match they had the Broncos, Storm, Dragons, Cowboys and Warriors still playing. Wouldn't it be common sense not to have those teams playing on the test weekend?

The best solution is to have 4 stand alone rep football weekends, 3 for Origin and 1 for the test. But obviously that's not enough footy on those weekends, so I think we should have a knockout competition like the Challenge Cup in the UK with the last 4 rounds scheduled for those weekends.

The main advantage of a Challenge Cup would be that we still get some club football games on these weekends, but those lower quality games without the rep players won't affect the premiership which is the main thing.

Also it would be a good way for clubs from lower tiers to get some experience and exposure.

Indeed.

"Hey guys, you know how you wanted that Dragons vs Tigers game? Well guess what? How about Tonga vs Samoa!"

I'm all for internationals but any person who can sell that would be a miracle maker in my book.

The only international that you could really sell is NZ vs Pacific Islanders, but then again think to yourself - in Australia how high would that game actually rate?

Either play Origin on a Saturday or a Sunday with a buffered NRL comp around it (by using byes) - or - play a knockout cup and work out a way that clubs put up decent teams for it.

A knockout cup is effectively a mini-finals tournamenent held in a June/July. It would actually attract more interest than overshadowed NRL games and I can see networks paying more for it.

yes yes yes. i would love to see:

Fri nite- city country.
Sat aft- pacific nations play each other rotating each year H and A, the odd one in sydney etc...
Sat nite/Sun- Test.

If the RFL and ARL get there act together we could have a full int. schedule mid season each year. Give the lower tier nations players a chance to shine more often.. rotating NZ/Aus.

I love the idea of a stand alone International weekend. Hopefully some smaller nations take the opportunity and run with it -and the players/teams support it.

Might just be Aus vs NZ but we can dream.
