QLD are screwed without Price and Civoniceva

So I'm seeing alot of doom and gloom surrounding NSW supporters here and how we may never win a state of origin series for a while.
Does anyone else think QLD rely too heavily on Price and Civoniceva? QLD were overwhelming favourites in the first game but look what happened when Price didn't play. I seriously think if you take these guys out of the side QLD don't win the series. They aren't getting any younger either and it's only a matter of time before they go. Anyone else think QLD are screwed when they both leave? I can't really see any replacements for them who are even in the same universe.

You may be right, but it's all the more reason for the NSW forwards to hang their heads in shame. They have been outplayed by senior citizens who use their brains and toughness, rather than speed. If only Willie Mason had such mental fortitude and let his on-field performance do the talking for him. All credit to Price and Civoniceva -- for old blokes they have big engines and just chew up the Origin tough-stuff.

You miss the point. They don't have to be as capable now, they only need to be as capable then.

Typical NSW problem solving. Instead of improving your own team, you stand around with your dicks in your hand for another year waiting for QLD to fall back to you.

NSW Selectors : "I know, we'll just wait for the QLD team to retire"

 I didn't realise I was a NSW selector.

I agree. No one seems to be stepping up yet to fill the role of Civo and Price.
Hannant may get their, especially by going to the dogs who are normally pretty good at developing forwards. Although not lately...

No because Thurston and Prince are capable replacements for Lockyer. Name me some props who are anywhere near as good as Price and Civoniceva.

I'm a QLDer and agree we struggle a bit in the forwards ... it's price & petero first and daylight second.

Out future circa 2010 looks likely to be players such as Hannant, Thaiday, Shillington, Kaufusi, Webb, Matthew Scott & Nate Myles, many of whom are backrowers who will have to play prop. Not that there's anything wrong with that. A certain S. Price started his career as a second rower.

Back row is where I think we'll fall short once we start pushing these guys upfront as we'll be lacking choices besides the likes of Dallas Johnson, Ashley Harrison, Jacob Lillyman & Corey Parker.

Queensland played a significant portion of the match (after Prince got injured until well into the second half) without both these players. It was an astute tactic by Meninga, as Myles, Thaiday and Crocker shouldered heavy burdens during this period and Qld did not concede any tries. It shows that these blokes are capable of stepping up to the plate, unfortunately however we will no longer have Crocker there.

Whilst no one can fill Ebony and Ivory's shoes (love those nicknames), we have enough young forwards who have proven themselves at this level.

TBH, i was thinking this during the whole series. Price is the backbone of the QLD team since webke's retirement. Say what you like about Lockyer or inglis or thursty being the key to QLD's victories over the past 3 years, for me its all Price and to a lesser extent Civo.

Price gives QLD the edge IMO.

the good thing is, they have both pretty much said they'll play for qld as long as they are needed. :)

Yep and QLD looked like they were in trouble when they were off. Even the commentators were saying Meninga had to get Price and Civoniceva back out there when it looked like NSW were on top.

Very true, but what did we manage to do when they were off the field? Oh thats right, bomb to the wings, we saw how good that worked, even after we tried it 27 times.

Doesn't matter who the QLD team consists of, while we have handbrake halves we won't win.

Yeah you're right to an extent.
But there are forwards on the cusp of developing into workhorses and we will work on that.

Is Dave Taylor a Queenslander? Give that kid another few years and he'll be great.
When Price and Civ retire, the others will have to step up - That's the real deciding factor.

yeh mate, Taylors a Qlder. The problem with props is they're like a fine wine. They often take a few good years to mature.

I reckon Civ and Price will both go around again next year ... why shouldn't they.

That will give Hannant, Miles, Shillington, Taylor, Kenny, Scott, Ross and even Tronc another year to develop their game.

Shillington is a really good prospect imo, along with the current origin crop of hannant, Myles, Thaiday. Kenny will be a good honest toiler, and Taylor has potential stardom as long as he doesn't let it go to his head.
