QLD doesn't need another team

Why would AwFuL want the NRL to put another team in Brisbane?

The last thing they want is more competition for the Lions.
The Lions will always have serious competition in Brisbane and the AFL knows it. They also know that the Lions has it's market and that new NRL sides will do little to nothing to change that, in fact any new NRL sides in Qlds biggest competitors will be the other NRL sides and each new addition will both suffer from the law of diminishing returns and eat more and more into the customer base of the others.

What the AFL has and treasures more than anything is an effective monopoly on the football market in 50% of the country without a single competitor that can match their fire power. Sure the NRL is never going to take a dominant share in that half of the country, at least not in our lifetime or the next, nor should that be their goal, but the NRL is the only entity in the country that could take that away from them and that would hurt them more than pretty much anything that anybody could do to them.

The AFL would be absolutely delighted at the prospect of new NRL sides in Brisbane, PNG, NZ, or legacy clubs like the Bears, just as the NRL would be pissing themselves with laughter at the AFL being forced to expand to Tasmania.

So the nrl isn’t going to take mich of Perth or Adelaide but putting nrl teams there they will fear us

Meanwhile in one year the dolphins were already impacting the lions (said so by the lions)

The Broncos becoming a premiership contender again probably impacted the Lions more than the Dolphins did. Reece Walsh also being such a superstar. My 14yo niece knows who Walsh is and has zero interest in NRL. AFL players still struggle to have a profile here despite their pretty good crowds.

The last thing they want is more competition for the Lions.

Their crowds went up last year despite the Dolphins entry. They have their niche audience, like the Swans have and like the Storm have. There are people who follow both but there are also people that follow Lions and don’t follow league or conversely don’t follow fumbleball and just follow league.

It’s folly to argue that Queensland is in any way different to NSW or Victoria.

We shouldn't view the decision on the 18th club in isolation, it's a fait accompli that soon after we'll see 19 and 20.

Is it? Plenty of things can happen between an 18th side and a prospective 19th and 20th sides.

Exactly. 18 teams doesn't make 19 & 20 necessary - not like how 15 (Souths return) made 16 inevitable, or how 17 (Dolphins) made 18 teams a matter of time.

An even number of teams utilizes every team each week, an odd number doesn't. Look at any time the competition has had an odd number of teams - it doesn't last more than a handful of years.

The inefficiency of that is a tipping point for either cutting a team (not gonna happen) or adding a team, so everyone plays during a full round.

But we need more teams in QLD to stop the growth of AFL. Never mind that the Swans grew a following in Sydney despite there being 9 Sydney NRL teams, more Brisbane teams will stop the growth of the 1 AFL team there.
Well according to the boss of the afl they have taken over in qld

since all you people see the afl as some benchmark to copy then you must take what your guru said seriously

A perth nrl team will be our saviour lmao

Sounds like we should be doing what they’re doing and aiming for a slice of the market in our competitor’s traditional territories.

If only afl would have a super league war to give our clubs in melb and Perth an artificial leg up

afl are copying us now we don’t need to follow them in anything
