QLD doesn't need another team

If only afl would have a super league war to give our clubs in melb and Perth an artificial leg up

afl are copying us now we don’t need to follow them in anything
There’s enough people moving to Perth from RL friendly demographics we’ll naturally be able to carve out a healthy presence in the WA market. All it will take is a team there and time.

AFL in Queensland will always have enough followers to sustain them because there will always be a stream of ex-pats escaping the bleakness of Victoria. The problem is they mostly continue supporting their Victorian teams and skewer older as a lot are retirees (meaning less second generation support). You see this when comparing TV ratings in Queensland between Lions games where there's no Victorian team involved.

That said an extra NRL team in Queensland would really suffocate any other non-NRL sport, similar to how AFL suffocates everything else in Victoria. Each Queensland NRL club would be playing 8 derby games each season - 20 in total.

FIFO workers

it will be a tiny part of the market
Every single person moving to Perth from RL friendly demographics is not going to be a FIFO worker. Perth isn’t going to get to ~3.5 million people in 25 years with ~1.5 million FIFO workers.

A lot of those people will be working in other sectors and will come from RL friendly demographics. RL will naturally be able to carve out a presence in the market with a team there and time.

Theres enough here already to sustain a club. It will become one of the bigger clubs in the comp.

So why not wait 50 years till they are a meaningful part of the pop rather than supporting a tiny club with poor tv ratings and juniors for that time

there are better areas to go to now

50? Perth will grow by another ~1.5 million people within the next ~25 years. As Bukowski said, there’s already a large RL friendly population there that will only grow. The time to get in on the growth is now. Get the club established and allow it to grow alongside Perth.

Nz juniors tv value crowds
Perth can’t match them on any of those criteria

Brisbane tigers same

Perth should wait

Their crowds went up last year despite the Dolphins entry. They have their niche audience, like the Swans have and like the Storm have. There are people who follow both but there are also people that follow Lions and don’t follow league or conversely don’t follow fumbleball and just follow league.

It’s folly to argue that Queensland is in any way different to NSW or Victoria.
Lions finished second on the ladder and made the grand final. They have a history of drawing strong attendances when they're a premiership threat. It's the drop off when they finish at the foot of the ladder that hurts their viability. They're still reliant on more funding from AwFuL than all bar two or three clubs and have the largest debt in the sport.

What are the odds of the ARLC and its commercial partners placing the potential but non-guaranteed long-term benefits of expanding into a fumbleball market that has just 8k regular FTA viewers ahead of instant monetary gain from an underserviced traditional market that has 111k?

NZ 2 really doesn't have that much TV value in itself.

Good luck getting more out of our TV stations, given that Sky are the only ones with cash - and they can pay whatever they like, knowing they won't be outbid.

Plus the Warriors appear to have little-to-no value to Australian TV (FTA just ain't interested in them), and an NZ team doesn't offer any new timezone for scheduling - though admittedly it DOES help plug that awkward 6pm Eastern time Friday slot, that no Aussie team likes hosting games in.

Warriors tv ratings are up 74 percent so far on sky nz and sky open

they also provide free content to Australian tv

How does a Perth-based team add value to the broadcast rights?

There's just 8k regular viewers in Perth. Viewership for the Eagles and Dockers in Perth is well below the numbers produced by the Queensland NRL teams in Brisbane.

The biggest problem with Perth is its timezone. Two of the three FTA games go head-to-head with the 6pm news.

Perth has no juniors of merit and no value for Aussie tv viewers

The only other bid that no value for tv is png. It they are getting help via 60 million govt grant to help grow rugby league

Brisbane 3 and nz2 have a huge value for tv companies

NRL: "Hey, Sky.. we're looking at putting another NZ team in the competition. Fancy paying us a lot more for that?"

Sky: "Why would we? No-one can out-bid us over here. And anyway, we'd need to shell-out money anyway to cover that team's home games. You can have a bit more for an extra game per weekend, I guess.."

You do realise that Foxtel has no competition for the broadcast rights in Australia, right?

If it wasn't for the anti-siphoning laws then all games would be live and exclusive on Foxtel.

Hey sky rugby league is booming in nz and your ratings are through the roof
