QLD doesn't need another team

Hey sky rugby league is booming in nz and your ratings are through the roof

want more ?

using your logic sky could pay one dollar rather than 34 million pa for it

doesn’t make sense
He and his mates think Foxtel will reach for the cheque book to write mega deals for teams in Adelaide and Perth. They only see what they want to see.

To sum it up, they want the ARLC to be like the AwFuLC, despite the former having a completely different structure that prevents it from being run like the latter.

The best they can hope for is NZ2, Brisbane3 and Perth. Some of them are happy to have this. Others whinge because there's no Adelaide in the picture.

I'm disappointed in V'landys for ruling out Wellington. There's a real opportunity for us to make serious ground in New Zealand.

Their idea for expansion is to add teams that provide zero actual expansion over teams that will grow the game just because they are jealous of afl

Nz juniors tv value crowds
Perth can’t match them on any of those criteria

Brisbane tigers same

Perth should wait
Wellington and Christchurch are both forecasted to still have populations under 1 million by the time Perth will have 3.5 million people. There’s more from to draw from surrounding towns and areas, but Perth will have them covered for potential population. Not to say there isn’t value in NZ2, but getting bedded into a market of 3.5 million people is a very worthwhile proposition.

I highly doubt Bris 3 will come in next after Bris 2. It’ll probably happen at some point but not as the next team.

You are wasting your time. These blokes are fanatical deniers. They’ve destroyed every expansion thread with utter nonsense and negativity. They make Perth Red look like an optimist.

Yep, I don’t disagree NZ2 is a good expansion candidate, however all the negativity around ‘but AFL’ in regard to Perth could have once been said in regard to NZ outside out of Auckland with a ‘but Union’. Union’s historically been incredibly dominant; time, presence and some misfortune on Union’s part and now a 2nd team looks like it could be viable.

No similar collapse of afl in Perth nor is it likely

so which is a better choice if it’s solely between Perth and Christchurch ?

How do you know? The AFL didn’t see Super League coming when the Swans moved to Sydney, yet they were here to capitalise on it. The weakening of Super Rugby would have been hard to envision once upon a time, fast forward to the departure of South Africa and the weakening of Australian Union and the whole comp looks shaky- we’re in NZ to capitalise. To similarly capitalise in Perth, we actually need to have built a presence and have a team there.

That doesn’t answer other factors like what happened to the NRL in Sydney or Super Rugby in NZ. Both comps were doing well in Australia and NZ respectively until the Super League war and the reorganisation of Super Rugby and the departure of South Africa. The AFL didn’t have a crystal ball to see Super League coming in the 80s, nor do we know what could happen to the AFL in the future. We aren’t there to capitalise if an event like that has similar impacts on the AFL in the future.

The question is a tough one, both are good options. Perth has the advantage of a projected larger population and a growing RL friendly demographic in the city, Christchurch is smaller, but if Union’s woes continue, we have a real chance to move in.

South Island 1.2 million
Wa 2.7 million

afl clubs took a vote to kill off the Sydney swans bc they were losing money and going nowhere

they voted to support them then super league saved them

South Island projected population in 2048 - 1.4 million.

Perth projected population in 2050 - 3.5 million.

And? It doesn’t change the fact that they were there to capitalise on Super League. If we’re to capitalise on any future misfortune to befall the AFL, we need a presence in their traditional markets.

Union is struggling now in nz

Putting a team in Perth and hoping afl struggles is stupid
