QLD doesn't need another team

The article mentions a 3rd Queensland team towards the end, but no specifics as to where in Queensland. I think the idea is daft, when they have Canberra and a 3rd WA team as very strong candidates for a 20th AFL club.

If Tasmania join the league next, then the Hawks & Kangaroos will break loose of their current Tasmanian arrangements - and can look at other places to take some home games.

Places that can't concievably have their own AFL teams right now - Maybe Cairns, maybe Townsville, maybe even Newcastle or Woolongong. That's just how they spread their game. Canny stuff.
After Tassie it will be a long time before Vicky Kicky house can't afford another afl club with the amount of money the midgets and the thuns are leaking.

Yeah.. after adding the Suns, Giants & Devils - all teams that need a degree of help/subsidies/preferential treatment - I think there'll be pressure on AFL administrators to make team 20 as much of a cash-cow as possible.

So that works against NSW, Queensland and whatever chance Northern Territory has, but adding another team in WA or SA means a team near Perth or near Adelaide - probably cannibalizing existing teams support.

Canberra probably stands as the best chance for AFL's 20th team - sure it means the Giants relinquish a secondary market, but it means that team can focus on just being a 2nd Sydney team.

lol, yeh the $100mill plus tv deal uplift they are getting next year isnt going to help with that at all!
They'll have 20 clubs by the end of their tv deal. We'll probably still be waiting for the turbo to kick in!

ACT govt will come to the party like the Tassie govt has ($12mill a year for 12 years which substantially reduces the financial risk for AFL for the Devils). Throw in a new stadium and you can almost guarantee Canberra will be AFL team 20.

More bullshit predictions based on nothing other than what Perth Rat wants. Of course he wants the 20th AwFuL team in Canberra. He doesn't want it in Joondalup because it will hurt Perth's prospect of supporting an NRL club.

The f**ken mayor of Joondalup is advocating for a third Perth AwFuL club and there's a consortium putting in a bid.

ACT Gov has a decade long deal with GWS. The Giants aren't going to relinquish Canberra when a fair chunk of its fanbase and revenue is based there. AwFuL isn't going to weaken the Giants just because Perth Rat is fearful of a third club in Perth.

Exactly. It'll have to take some big deal to placate the Eagles & Dockers regarding a 3rd WA team.. Canberra just seems like low-hanging fruit by comparison.

Just payout or wait until the current Giants deal is done, then re-deploy them to another secondary market if necessary.

You could see the Giants playing the odd game in Newcastle & Canberra the odd game in Woolongong. Two markets that aren't in the running for a team NOW but hey why not build a live following in the meantime?

The sort of thinking AFL has. They play the long game.

Eagles and Dockers don't have any say over expansion.

That's a decade away.

Do you think AwFuL will have 19 teams for several seasons?

Devils dont enter until 2028 , 3rd team wont be entering for 4-5 years after that Id say in line with next tv deal. GWS deal with Canberra runs out 2032. Timings perfect for admission of a Canberra AFL club then. I can see GWS swapping Canberra for Darwin for 3 games a year at that time.

Yeah, timeline makes sense - and the inefficiency of having 19 teams for 4-5 years (at least one team a week with a bye), is balanced with a) a decent lead-in time for team 20, and b) ample opportunity to grow player depth in preparation for that 20th team.

As far as secondary markets go, AFL certainly has options there - Darwin, North Queensland, Newcastle spring to mind immediately.. as they may be expansion options after 20 teams, but they're not "there" yet... so why not chuck them a game or two in the meantime?

Again, it's a "long game" strategy.

The main obstacle to a new team in Canberra is the fact the AFL’s 18th team, the Greater Western Sydney Giants, have already put their flag down in the ACT, with three home games a year plus an academy and a growing membership base.

It would be tough for the AFL to take the ACT off the Giants after all the work they have done.

Do Perth Rat and flippikat think AwFuL will tear down the Giants' academy in Canberra because the pair of them don't want a team in Joondalup?

It's about as likely as Adelaide getting one of the next three NRL licences.

Even adjusting for population increase, NT is still a small market. But it often comes top in terms of participation rates – more than 13% of Territorians participate in AFL programs compared to 8% in WA, 6% in SA and 2% in Victoria and 1.9% for NSW/ACT combined.

The NT is also top in terms of adult participation and top four in terms of children’s participation.

By contrast ACT is 6th, but still ahead of Queensland and NSW in terms of the kids participation rates.

At AFL level, the NT produces 56 elite AFL players per million people with only Victoria and SA ahead. ACT produces 17 ahead of Queensland, NSW and Ireland (the only major source of AFL talent beyond our shores).

Despite pouring hundreds of millions into NSW and Queensland, both markets continue to produce f**k all players for AwFuL.

The high participation rate in WA doesn't bode well for a Perth-based NRL team.

Imagine trying to convince children to play rugby league when 8% of Western Australians already participate in fumbleball?

It's no wonder the Eagles and Dockers have such a high membership base!

People on here underestimate just how ingrained fumbleball is in Western Australian culture. Eight per cent of Western Australians versus just two per cent of Victorians actively participate in the game.

Perth is arguably a tougher market to crack than Melbourne.

Its funny you have a pop at me and not the original poster who took this thread off into afl discussion! One eyed much?

The AFL have rocks in their head if they are going to add more teams. They are seriously struggling for the top level talent to go around the current 18 clubs plus their strategy for the last few decades has been to stick to major capital city markets.

If they start getting desperate and going to Tassie and / or oversaturating Perth or Queensland, they will quickly find themselves in the position we were in, in 1998 (minus the war) where rationalisation of Melbourne and some non-feasable expansion clubs will need to be done just to stabalise the ship.

Having said all of that, I hope they do it. It would be nice watching them implode just as RL finally (hopefully) starts expanding again.
