Qn: Why is our Toyota Cup team so poor?

Asking in light of the final game being another flogging.... back in the dark days of the early 90s, I could at least look forward to the PResidents Cup making the finals and possibly winning it. This year the Toyota Cup side has been woefull.

Can anyone shed some light on why we are so poor? assuming it is the lack of investment in the side, poor recruitment, or generational change (with better Flegg kids coming up next year).

Can anyone allay my fears that we are in trouble?

We aren't in trouble at all for the future, don't worry.
The problem with our NYC side is the fact they are (from memory) the youngest side in the competition (on average age), and it shows that a lot of them are not ready for the NYC yet. However, when we win, we have often blown teams off the park.
Next year, with the signings of Marmin Barba, Paki Afu, etc, we will be set.

The forwards looked half the size of the Warriors pack, looked like boys against men. Plus the halves and hooker look pretty average.

Yes the forwards look small, the halves and hooker are hopeless, and the backs are duds. Apart from that everythings sweet.

I'm not sure the new signing of Paki Afu will help NYC? He's 20 this year.

But Marmin Barba and Bruest will make a difference.

Also the fact that the good players will be 19, and not 18 will really help too!

If you think Loko looks good in the NYC, you should watch him playing guys his own age in the high school league!

Just wondering what happened to aust schoolboy Daniel Galati, and Royce Hura 2 good talents that definately would have strengthened your side.

I couldn't care less about how the U20's perform as a team. It's a joke of a competition to begin with and just because overall a team performs poorly doesn't mean individuals from that side won't become future first graders or even stars. Realistically you'd only really expect 2 to 3 players from every U20's side to become regular first graders and that goes for every team.

Look at the Canberra Raiders Under 20's team in 2008 (Premiers).....
Compare that team with their current first grade side (half the team)....
Look at where that Club currently is and where they look to be heading in 2011 and beyond......
Compare that with where Parra appear to be heading in 2011 and beyond....

The point is every season your entire U20's roster changes, so if you have a bad year it's no big deal. As long as the coaches are focussing on those 2, 3 or 4 that they think can become future first graders and developing them accordingly then it's not problem. You can't expect that every year your U20's side is going to have 6 or 7 players become future stars, and you can't if you win the U20's comp then those all those players will be able to step up to the mark at NRL level.
