Im not unhappy with the squad. Some xfactor strike that are in form, an honest, hardworking pack and a very interesting bench.

The ambush is on. QLD by 8.

We're only a few hours away from the series opener and one of the major talking points in the build-up to this year's series is the change in Kevin Walters. Last year, Walters appeared to be taking part in a popularity contest, saying all the right things without coming across as confident. In fact Kevie appeared frazzled heading into Game I with Smith's shock retirement and the late withdrawel of Billy Slater.

This year Kevie has declared war on the guys down south and it didn't take long for the media to uncover where all this bravado was coming from. Kevie had sought counsel from the man they call the coach whisperer, Bradley Charles Stubbs, a motivational speaker who has worked with Michael Maguire, Michael Cheika, Graham Arnold and Trent Robinson. Stubbs' mantra of 'win, win, win, done, done, done' has been a source of ridicule but it has livened up the promotion of the game that was feeling like a repeat of last years. It was Brad Fittler's Baby Blues taking on a Queensland side learning to live without having a team of immortals. It wasn't thrilling so to see Kev come out and make a bold declaration has put everyone on alert.

The changes didn't stop there. A lot of those past immortals have now made their way into the coaching squad with Billy Slater, Johnathan Thurston and Justin Hodges all assuming roles as assistants. Queensland also left their base at Sanctuary Cove and moved to the W Brisbane Luxury Hotel in the heart of the CBD. They've trained predominately at the Souths Logan Magpies home ground at Davies Park and have made a point of honouring the history of QRL.

This year's jersey was inspired by the 1919 Queensland side and during the Captain's Run they wore a special print of the jersey.

2019 Queensland

The Maroons specifically learned about Duncan Thompson and his story about serving in both World War 1 and World War 2 and his playing career where he played for Ipswich, Wests Newcastle, North Sydney and Toowoomba.

Former Queensland Captain and lovable pest Allan Langer had his statue unveiled ahead of Game I.

Alfie paid tribute to his 'biggest supporter' his late father, Harry Langer. Alf threw his support behind Queensland Captain Daly Cherry-Evans and the new faces in the squad.

Finally coach Kevin Walters made no secret about his plans for tonight's clash. It was all about that left-hand side combination, particularly Kalyn Ponga.

Ponga holds the key for the Maroons and if he's able to replicate the form he has shown at Newcastle in the Origin arena, he will give Queensland every chance.

We're less than five hours away, let the games begin.

The story which was shown tonight was how mentally resillient this QLD team is. They could have been excused to lose with the other team having an 8-0 lead. Rather than that, the QLD boys dug deep and increased their resolve. It was the degree of intention QLD brought to bear which won QLD the 2nd half and with that, the first game of the 3 game series.

NSW didn't look bad. QLD won against a very able and capable team which was playing very well in their own right.

QLD are very lucky with the people we can call upon whenever Origin comes around. We lose a player of the calibre of Val Holmes, a true superstar of Rugby League, yet still hit home runs on the wings.

Could Israel be returning to the fold? Not this year.

The problem for the other team is that they have strike weapons and 'grunts'. We have more members of our team as strike weapons. The difference of the talent across the park in the Maroons is that so many can initiate an attacking play out of the situation which has immediately arisen right in front of them. No-one can plan a defence against that ability. We have so many people who can spot an opportunity then immediately capitalise in an instant. We don't have 3 or 4 players like that. We have 8 or 9. The other thing, is that having numerous strike weapons with the ability to conjure a winning play out of nothing as your talent, when one of them sees an instant opportunity; They all see it and react in an instant. One creates the opportunity in the moment and everyone else is switched-on to carry that on or to loom in support.

The other team aren't going to be able to find an answer in 2 1/2 weeks time. You watch. if you thought they were bad in the 2nd half of this game, I've a feeling that the wheels are going to fall off completely in Game 2 2019. NSW have a big problem and the problem is called the QLD Team.

QLD didn't need 2 1/2 weeks to find an answer: 10 minutes break was all it took to fix what needed to be fixed.

NSW left edge was weak as, while I agree with their cause, they should now stick to football and stay away from putting political pressure on themselves, they were useless last night, their heads were not in the game. You’re paid to play footy boys, play freakin footy!!!!! Make your political statement after you win the game don’t drag it through the game with you!!

It was reported in the Australian that Tim Glasby and Christian Welch are favorites to replace Joe Ofahengaue and potentially Jai Arrow. I would assume both would go to the bench and Dylan Napa elevated to the starting line up as Prop. Jarrod Wallace is still in the mix though and is a close third behind them.

Anyone but Wallace please, I'm sorry I just don't see it.

I said after game one last year that nsw had to win game 2 to win the series, we were unbeatable up here in the third. I don’t feel the same about the Sydney game three this year. Nsw this year have three or four question mark players that will be involved.

Hopefully we aren't exposed up the middle...

Arrow's defence in the second stint was crucial in stopping those quick play the balls that Cook and Tedesco feed off.

Napa in doubt with a wrist injury. Dylan reckons he'll be right to play but there's a small fracture in his wrist.

Gagai has been quarantined from the group as he battles a virus.
