R10 vs Warriors

And i hope we never see him in a Panthers jersey. A true Benji clone...all style no substance
I think he needs a Bennett or a Bellamy type coach. He has been King of the Castle for too long and needs some tough love. Bennett would fix him in three months. Thank god for the salary cap, even the Broncos couldn't fit him in. Could they?

Johnson is a 1% footballer when it comes to Having a "football" brain. Sure he can pass, kick, run and step better than most but his abilities when it comes to control, leadership on the field and overall choices of play don't match his physical talent.

Some warriors fans will tell you otherwise but he's just not the complete package.

I think Johnson needs an appropriate halves partner as much as a quality coach. If he had a Soward type next to him who could run the game and do the majority of the kicking he would be able to do all the fancy shit without the weaker parts of his game bringing him down.

Yeah Johnson at 5/8th outside of a Soward, Cronk or Thurston would be unstoppable. They can manage the game and take responsibility while he focuses on doing what he does best.

He is probably the most skilled half in the game. He just doesn't have the brain to fully reach his potential. Even his best games at rep football he had Foran beside him to take that pressure off him.

Five points from the Warriors game.

1. The Wind ? It was instrumental in making sure the Panther fans had their usual anxiety levels for large parts of the game. In the first half the Warriors used it to help neutralise the Panther?s go forward. The ability to hoof the ball, literally miles, allowed the Warriors some good field position and the lead at half time. In the second half, without the wind to help, the Warriors were found wanting and struggled to make metres.

2. Goal Kicking ? Jamie Soward and Shaun Johnson take a bow. Their kicking was quite extraordinary considering the conditions. To give you an idea how strong the wind was, Shaun Johnson put up a bomb from half way and it went reasonably high, but it travelled 60 metres and over the dead ball line. In slow motion you could see he barely put any effort in and the wind nearly took it out of the stadium.

3. The Panther style ? Kick for the corners force the opposition to ruck the ball out and drive them back with tough defence seems to be what we are trying to do. A lack of discipline has rendered this tactic ineffective at times, but yesterday the Warriors were pinned down for large periods using this tactic. In the second half they barely got over half way.

Now we just need some set plays. At the moment, the cupboard is bare. We make it up as we go along.

4. Speed ? When DZW got in the clear the Warriors showed that we are a team of very slow players. He was run down easily by TWO Warriors and looked like he had divers boots on. He is probably our fastest player and even with a head start, Shaun Johnson had time to brush his hair before he gave chase and caught him.

Speed is an area of weakness for the Panthers and is one of the factors in why we struggle to score points.

5. Jamie Soward had his best game this year and used every bit of experience to outsmart the Warriors. His tactical kicking was brilliant whilst his opposite number was going for miracle plays and kicking out on the full.

That said, Shaun Johnson?s running game is a delight to watch. He could step and swerve his way past a squadron of SAS in a phone box. We desperately need a half with a running game to open up play for us. Jamie does this 1 in 10 games and we usually win when he does.

I agree 100% with you about our speed in the backline. That's where Cronulla beats us a few weeks ago.

I was surprised how easily he was caught. Blake is the only player with real pace.

Im just watching the highlights and obviously Johnson ran him down from a long way off but I dont think Lolohea would of caught him without Johnsons intervention,. Lolohea had a pretty big start on him as well he was atleast 10m further down field than Dallin when he took the interception and he had to shrug off Wright and Swerve around Hoffman before he could really take off. Either way I dont think a lack of speed has really hurt us this season.

We have close to the fastest forwards in the comp but backs don't have any out and out speedsters. We aren't really slow though. Scored a few long range tries this year so cna get by

I dont know what Griffin is trying to achieve with our defence but it isn't working. Its like the whole team has terrible tackling technique and we are always being opened up through the middle, atleast once a game.

Elijah Taylor made atleast two try savers yesterday one of them being a one on one tackle with Sam Kasiano, Taylor chopped him down half a metre short of the line with a textbook tackle. Ive got no problems with Taylor being released but the fact that we told him he had to improve his defence is concerning imo.

We make good 1st up contact though. Just fall off those tackles more often. Atleast Soward and Hiku are on different sides now

Exactly, the effort and intent is there, it just seems like the technique is lacking. Take the wright try, Dallin tries to hit him with a big body shot when a legs tackle would of prevented the try and is much easier, some times being safe is the better than being aggressive.

unsure if anyone has mentioned previously but super impressed with that one-handed flick(?) pass from JFH to DWZ to score in the corner. the safe option would've been to hold onto the ball but he backed himself & delivered! hopefully that reinforces to all that JFH is here to stay but on the flip-side not to be too loose when the play is not on.

JFH has created a couple tries with nice offloads now. When I saw him last year I thought he was just a power player but he is actually quite skilled.

The lack of speed stops us creating space by getting outside players and drawing players in to reduce their space to run. It is one of the reasons we pound the opposition in their 20 zone and don't score (a common occurrence). Whare and Blake seem to have reasonable speed, but we haven't had a chance to see how they go yet. One or the other, or both, are always injured.

Whare is slower than Dallin, it takes a lot more than just speed to get outside your man consistently.

It would be nice to have some more speed but I dont think its something we need desperately.
