Sea Eagles V Dragons preview

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

http://svc002.wic112cx.server-web.com/News/Latest/NewsArticle/tabid/76/NewsId/6822/Default.aspx A danger game for the Sea Eagles, although it won’t affect their second-place finish on the ladder. Defeat though would leave them entering the finals with a worrying hat-trick of losses following their colours being lowered by the Rabbitohs and Warriors.

The Warriors defeat came without five key players who were out “injured”; all five – Brett and Glenn Stewart, Luke Williamson, Steve Bell and Brent Kite – are back for this game.

Forget “Fortress Brookvale”, Manly doesn’t have the best record against the Dragons, who have beaten them at home on the Northern Beaches the past two times they’ve met there, including a 26-24 defeat last year.

That will fuel enthusiasm in the red-and-whites, who avoided the possibility of being lumped with the wooden spoon with a dominant 14-6 win against the Eels last Monday, they held Michael Hagan’s unit scoreless at halftime for the second time this season.

If they can repeat that sort of intensity against the Sea Eagles they will fancy their chances of ending the season on a high – over the past fortnight the home side has scored just four points in second halves but has had 42 points scored against them.

Watch out Sea Eagles: Expect the Dragons to employ plenty of decoy runners with some sweeping backline movement. It worked a treat last week and gained them a try to Rangi Chase, while they also blew one by running an obvious obstruction play, with myriad bodies in motion.

Their timing has been off in this regard all season but they certainly looked crisp against the Eels. They’ll favour the left side of the field, where they’ve scored the majority of their tries (28) and where Manly seems most susceptible, having conceded 21 tries.

Watch out Dragons: They may have copped a beating last week but the Sea Eagles still managed to keep their impressive record as first try-scorer intact. They’ve now crossed the lime line first in their past 14 games, with fullback Brett Stewart the man most likely. That doesn’t auger well for the Dragons, who’ve managed a half-time lead just nine of 23 times.

Where it will be won: Intensity – the Sea Eagles will come out firing, intent to arrest their recent decline. This is their strongest combination– althoughexpect five-eighth Jamie Lyon to continue interchanging with centre Steve Menzies.

Brent Kite was sorely missed last week; he may be averaging less than 60 minutes of game time but it’s all quality stuff: an average 16 runs for 136 metres a game, with 24 tackles a game.

He’s an inspiration to the likes of Anthony Watmough, Luke Williamson and Glenn Stewart; together they form one of the most mobile, damaging forward units in the comp.

Watmough and Stewart each figure in the top 10 for offloads, while Watmough is fourth for metres gained (3,215) and Stewart seventh (2,941). If the Sea Eagles forwards can gain dominance early it could be a long afternoon for the red-and-whites.

The History: Played 10; Sea Eagles 2, Dragons 8. Not a great record for the home side, with the Dragons winning the past six games between the outfits.

The Dragons were narrow victors (26-22) at Oki Jubilee Stadium in round 16; last year they inflicted their biggest defeat on the Sea Eagles with a 28-0 thumping in the semi finals.

Conclusion: While some will say Des Hasler erred in “resting” five players last week, it did enable him to get some metres into the legs of players like Travis Burns and Jason King, who were themselves returning from injury.

Seems he was content to perhaps sacrifice the Warriors game for the sake of the big picture deep into the finals… Mark Gasnier continues to inspire the Dragons – last week he ran 22 times for 195 metres, with 10 tackle breaks, a line break and a try assist.

Ben Creagh must be on the short list for Australian Test selection with continued great form – against the Eels he covered 174 metres with 21 runs plus 30 tackles. And Jamie Soward is making the most of their platform, running the backs with aplomb.

But perhaps the referee will have as much to do with the outcome here; Steve Clark has a penchant for blowing the pea and that’s worrying for the Dragons who with 153 penalties conceded in defence are the second least disciplined in the comp.

The Sea Eagles? They’re the best with just 121 yielded. And this game’s at Brookvale…

Match officials: Referee – Steve Clark; Sideline Officials – Steve Lyons & Jason Walsh; Video ref – Paul Simpkins.

Sea Eagles wary of fired up Dragons

Jason Avedissian

http://manlydaily.com.au/article/2007/08/31/6191_sports.html

IT'S not going to make up for what happened on the evening of September 15 last year, but there's little doubt Manly players will be looking for redemption at Brookvale Oval when they host the Dragons on Sunday.

``We did not go out on a good note last year,'' Manly fullback Brett Stewart said of the Sea Eagles 28-0 major semi-final defeat to the Dragons in 2006.
``The majority of the players who played in that team last year are in the team again this year. So, it is in the back of the players' minds this weekend.
``The Dragons have nothing to lose . . . we want to start getting on a roll coming into the finals and will be treating it like a semi-final.''
St George-Illawarra have not lost to the Sea Eagles in their past six outings and won their last encounter, 26-22 at Kogarah's OKI Jubilee Stadium in round 16.
It's a worrying statistic, but of little concern to Manly who are confident of turning around their two-game losing streak.
``It's not the end of the world but hopefully it's a big wake up call for us,'' centre Steven Bell said.
``Two losses now and we need to work on where we are going wrong and hopefully we can get it all out of our system now and hopefully it's the last loss of the year.
``We've been playing well for 40 minutes . . . I think if we can play a good 80 minutes against the Dragons on the weekend it will definitely help us going into the finals.''
Forward Glenn Stewart, who is back after sitting out last weekend's loss to the Warriors with a sternum injury, was equally confident of heading towards the finals with a win.
``We are confident in our own abilities,'' he said. ``We have all our players back now so we should put in a good performance. If we play well this week it should put us in good stead going into the finals.''
The Sea Eagles have been given an extension until next Wednesday to appeal the $10,000 breach notice handed down to coach Des Hasler following the club's controversial loss to the Warriors on Sunday.

Menzies knows Manly must fire

September 2, 2007
http://www.leaguehq.com.au/news/news/menzies-knows-manly-must-fire/2007/09/01/1188067436123.html
Manly veteran Steve Menzies sees the clash with St George Illawarra today as being as important as the club's home semi-final the following week.

Manly are coming off losses to resurgent South Sydney and top-four contenders New Zealand Warriors in the past fortnight, although both times they were without several stars.

It was just the second time this year Manly have dropped successive games and Menzies knows a third loss would be a devastating blow to their finals campaign.

The past two years they have stumbled during August and then been bundled out of the finals without a win.

Menzies believes the Sea Eagles need to gather some momentum and confidence against the Dragons to reignite their premiership drive.

I think we've just been a little bit off the pace the last four or five weeks even though we've only lost the last two," Menzies said. "We seem to be putting ourselves under a bit of pressure and we really need to have a good game this week."

Good to see Bani get another run, he looks like a great prospect. I wish I could make it today, I have to start work at 2.30 and I'm too lazy to turn up to work early and take one of the clients down there.
