we have a real history of looking ahead and when there's a game we should win comfortably followed by a hard one we always struggle or even lose the first game but do well in the second

Well you'd expect less fatigue from a player making fewer tackles per minute, especially in fewer minutes. See it's not just the number of minutes that matter, it's the player's workrate during those minutes. If you're doing very little in your 80 minutes then you recover during the game. It's why outside backs are always fresh, even in the 80th minute. Likewise an 80 minute player making fewer than 40 tackles. Active recovery keeps them fresh.
