Wayne likes jokers who can lighten up the dressing room and relieve tension with some off the cuff stuff. He can control those types of players and get them switched on and serious when they need to be. Smith isn't everyone's cup of tea but if Wayne sees value in him, then it's all about winning games of footy isn't it?

I get what you're saying, it's just that I can't cheer for a guy who I really can't stand. If he wins us games I may soften my stance on him.

I don't think Smith reneged on a deal with Wayne. He just went cold on the idea and changed his mind before he had decided. That's not the same thing. To renege is to agree or even sign and then back out. He didn't do that.
The Dolphins entered into negotiations for Smith, with Wayne Bennett viewing him as an ideal option out of the ruck. But the Kiwi was left unimpressed after the vision they used to sell the new franchise to him quickly unraveled.

“When I had the meetings and stuff, they told me all these players that they were going to sign and then pretty much like a week later all the players they told me they were going to sign ended up re-signing with the clubs they were already at,” he said.

Although Smith admitted that joining a club which was still in the process of building itself up from the ground floor didn’t necessarily appeal to him.

“The unknown kind of scared me a little bit,” he said.

“I turned it down sort of and then everyone from Melbourne Storm went there so I was a little bit filthy about that.”

We've all said that before about certain players we have learnt to hate in opposition colours but then when they signed on and ran out in cardinal and myrtle, our minds changed and we cheered for them because of the shirt they were wearing.

I remember feeling the same way about Michael Crocker. Hated him in Roosters or Storm colours not just for playing for them but being a dick towards us when he did and generally being a niggly bully type but loved him when he played for us and gave his all for our club and supporters. He was exactly what we needed at the time.

We're currently looking at playing Mamo and Humphreys in our hooker rotation. While I'm all for giving the young guys a go I think it will become a weak point for our team at some stage during the season. If we sign Smith on a cheap contract at the very worse he will be a upgrade on Havili. At the very best he will be our starting 9 each week. I don't really see what we have to lose. I do like the idea of signing TPJ at some stage.

It's obvious that the roosters don't want Smith otherwise they wouldn't have signed Robson.

Hypothetically if Smith is on 850k this year at the roosters and returns mid season there would only be like 300-400k to pay out of his contract the rest of the year? We're keeping 2 top 30 spots available. One could be for Smith and the other could be for TPJ.

Love ur work STID..

He told Wayne and the dolphins board that he was as good as go so they then decided stop negotiating with Mahoney then he reneged and they lost both
Then that's on them for missing out on Mahoney without having any ink on paper. Wayne's been around forever and knows how these things work. He knew it was nowhere near over the line and these things happen. If he's still keen on Smith, then that's ancient history that wouldn't phase him one bit. It's completely understandable that Smith ended up changing his mind. So what? Move on I say. It's a non-issue.
