Meninga, a pivotal figure in the club's halcyon years and still one of the most respected figures in the game, was in Canberra this week in his capacity as Queensland State of Origin coach.

Raiders officials, after reading a story in The Australian last week in which Meninga urged Carney to show loyalty, took the opportunity to arrange a meeting between the pair.

Meninga declined to reveal details of the conversation, although he did admit the pair spoke about Carney's future.

Carney, who has received offers from Penrith and Manly, is expected to make a decision early next week on where he will play in 2009.

"I was happy to have a yarn to him about it, about my thoughts and to see where he was with his thoughts, where he sees his future," Meninga said of his chat with Carney. "He's a likeable young fellow. I would like him to stay."

Wherever he elects to base himself next year, Carney will start the 2009 season as one of the highest paid players in the gam

CANBERRA'S contract crisis has worsened, with stars William Zillman and Neville Costigan joining Todd Carney on the open market.
Zillman and Costigan are both under contract for 2009 but their agents told The Sunday Telegraph they would look at exercising clauses allowing them to leave at the end of this season.
"Three years ago when we did the contract, we put in an option for 2009 allowing him to look around for other clubs," Jim Banaghan said of his client, full-back Zillman.
"We have told the club we are going to exercise our option to look around for next year.

Has anyone else noticed that usually only moments prior to the sh*t hitting the fan, that slug Bannigan's name crops up?

And it usually involves Canberra getting the raw end of the deal. I'm guessing he's a Balmain fan. He's probably that insaneink clown actually.

Player managers work on commission so realistically when you take the emotion out of it as they do 500k a year instead of 400k a year works out at around $10k commission for the manager and in the case of Carney, Riolo may get around $50k delivering him to the foot of the mountains.

Same with Banaghan and Zillman.

IMO player managers are scumbags but they unlike us have no emotional heartstrings tugging them one way or the other.

these articles are nothing but pure speculation and an attempt from the sydney media to kick us while we're down. i would not pay any attention to them.

Know what you're saying Azz but even where there's just a piff of smoke there is probably a flame or two as well.

Yes we could ignore it .. we could have ignored reports about Carney being courted by Elliot to play for the Panthers ... ignoring the article wont make it go away.

As I said previously to be taken seriously we have to present exhibit A, ie f**k OFF !!!

I think I might just hold back on that "sorry" letter.

How do I become a player manager - can't be that hard!

Cant understand why the majority of footballers use one ... f**k if I was a footballer I'd handle my own affairs or get my dad to take care of matters.

Laurie Daley didnt use one .. from memory he got good friend Kevin Neil to tell him where to sign.

Nor would i bay, and we'd be 10% richer then the fools using these clowns
they are a blight on the game and IMO a big reason why loyalty is no longer a staple of our game

they are a stain nick no doubt... but why not let them spin the sh*t to get you top dollar whilst concentrating on what you do best...10% is a pittance in the scheme of things..
do we have the people to play the player (manager).

I thought Laurie Daley had Steve Stone as his manager and possibly Steve Gillis for a while as well?

Have you blokes spoken to many NRL players? Believe me, they need an agent so they can take a dump in the morning.

Costigan tempted by return to Qld
David Jean

Canberra Raiders back-rower Neville Costigan has joined teammate William Zillman on a Gold Coast Titans hitlist and has admitted he wants to finish his NRL career in Queensland.
As uncertainty surrounding the future of playmaker Todd Carney continued yesterday, Costigan confirmed he had attracted interest from the Titans and at least one other NRL club.

The Queensland State of Origin enforcer has a get-out clause in his contract that will allow him to leave Canberra at end of the season.

Speedy fullback Zillman also has an option on his contract and has attracted interest from several NRL clubs as the Raiders face a growing crisis to keep their best talent in Canberra. Carney will this week decide between lucrative offers from Canberra, Penrith and Manly.

The Canberra Times understands the Penrith offer is valued at $2million over four years, at least $400,000 better than offers from Manly and the Raiders.

Coach Neil Henry has also been linked to the North Queensland Cowboys and Brisbane Broncos despite being on contract with the Raiders next year.

Costigan is yet to enter into serious negotiations with the Titans, but he admitted the prospect of moving closer to his hometown of Mackay was tempting.

"The Gold Coast is a bit closer to home and I'd love to go back home to Queensland one day and finish my career off up there somewhere," Costigan said.

"I feel pretty happy in Canberra but the biggest thing is that I don't get to see my family as much living here. It's real hard not seeing them.

"I brought my brother down last year once but it's real hard not seeing them more often."

While Costigan and Zillman have options in their contracts, the Raiders also have 14 first-grade players off contract at the end of the season.

Five-eighth Terry Campese will commence contract extension talks this week. The Raiders beat the Titans and the Melbourne Storm in the race to secure Costigan last season and he has since credited the club with turning around his career.

He has bought property in Canberra, but the lure of moving closer to his family could prove too tempting for the 22-year-old.

Costigan will meet with Raiders medical staff today in a bid to be cleared to play in Saturday's season opener against Newcastle.

He was confident he had overcome a quad injury and hoped to be back in full training by Wednesday.

But even if he was cleared to play, Costigan said it might be better to make his return through Queensland Cup feeder club Souths Logan, who have a bye this weekend.

"I wouldn't mind going back to the Queensland Cup and playing a couple of games just to get some match fitness." If Costigan isn't available Henry still has plenty of options in the back row.

Nigel Plum and Joe Picker both played a practice game against Jim Bean Cup side WA Reds in Perth on Saturday and are now both in line for selection after overcoming niggling injuries.

SATURDAY

NRL round one: Canberra Raiders v Newcastle Knights at Energy Australia Stadium, 7.30pm

Sounds to me like Costigan is a certainty to leave and Zillman a good chance to also go. Makes me think that recruiting young guys from Qld and developing them is not going to be the best option, especially with 3 sides now based in Qld and the players apparent desire to return home. If it was up to me I would be getting Ruben Wiki on board at the Raiders and putting him in charge of Polynesian recruitment. We have had success there in the past and given the respect that Ruben has, could be a real winner for the Raiders.

Funnily enough I would not be all that bothered about losing Cositgan, he is replaceable and appears injury proned and is always good for a few penalties and handling errors. Zillman would be a loss but if the result is retaining Carney then I can live with it.

I agree I'm not fussed on Costigan staying or going. If he goes I just hope he does it with a minimum of fuss. None of this "Canberra in crisis" media frenzy just because we lose a second rower thanks.

We must, however, keep at least one of Zillman or Carney. I'd slightly prefer Zillman, if forced to choose. If we lose both the club is farked.

Limey we need to keep both Carney and Zillman, if only to make a statement to the NRL that this club is a force to be reckoned with and will not allow 5 years of re-building to be wasted ... and I dont see any reason why we cant.

We've got to learn to structure our cap a bit top heavy rather than spread it out evenly.

It is my opinion that management have structured the cap so that there is no great difference between David Howell and William Zillman.

If we dont spend big on marquee palyers it basically means that management is forced to pay the average player more than he would get elsewhere ... and that is the reason why this club has attracted and retained it's fair share of average players in the past.

Most in the NRL think that Carney has the letters REP written all over him ... if we lose him we'll pretty qucikly have the letters RIP written all over our hopes of making an impact in the NRL.

Imo management are very close to f**king up the unf**kable with respect to Carney (I hope not) and rest assured whatever the posos on this and other forums think they will do the same with Zillman.
