Raiders want Orford - without the price tag from bullish Bradford

can hardly blame him for that though. He goes through preseason and week 1 as the clubs half, then becomes the designated scape goat for the round one loss and dumped to reserves despite having a decent performance. He then has watch mccrone's mediocre performances for the rest of the season.

I think Herbert's form only dropped when he was told he wouldn't be offered another contract.

yes and no . it could of gone 2 ways , he drops his bundle ( which he did ) or he busts his butt to prove thats he is worthy of a contract with another club.
He is pretty fortunate that Bradford had the Orford walkout because it look like Herbert wasnt going to be playing top level league in 2011.

I like Herbert , 2008 version , he did alot in our run to the semis that year.

Hopefully this will be sorted out within the next week. From todays Telegraph.

MATT Orford has no club and no training partners - but still the halfback is firming to steal that Buy Of The Year mantle from South Sydney superstar Greg Inglis.
In a mock market framed by TAB Sportsbet, unsigned Orford incredibly sits ahead of every other recruit in the best-buy category bar Inglis, who is favourite at $2.75.
The result is a timely one for the 2008 Dally M medallist, who now looks certain to resolve his contract dispute with English club Bradford and return to the NRL.
"Matt Orford is certainly an appealing player for any club," says Canberra coach David Furner, whose club remains favoured to snare the former Sea Eagles No. 7.
"Halfback is a role where players improve with time, with experience. And Matt has plenty of that. He's won a grand final, won a Dally M Medal, he's a player who knows how to get a job done.

"But right now it'd be wrong to assume too much because he still has some legalities that need to be sorted. It's no secret that we're interested in him but until he gets that other stuff worked out no NRL club can go anywhere near him."
Orford's manager George Mimis was giving nothing away about the future of his star client last night, however sources close to the Central Coast product insist he is close to ending the ongoing dispute over $200,000 with Bradford.
Other standout results of the market include Canterbury boasting three recruits, Trent Hodkinson, Frank Pritchard and Aiden Tolman, in the top dozen while Parramatta fail to rate a mention despite signing a gang of recognised players including Carl Webb, Chris Walker, Reni Maitua, Paul Whatuira and Casey McGuire.
Newcastle back-rower Chris Houston, who only returned to training this week after four drug supply charges against him were dropped, is also firmly in the market at $11."Matt Orford may have his share of knockers but when you look at what he's achieved in the game coupled with his experience, he has the potential to be a great buy," TAB Sportsbet spokesman Matt Jenkins said.
"Canberra will be missing [playmaker] Terry Campese for much of the year so, if Matt does go ahead and sign with the Raiders, a lot of responsibility will fall on his shoulders. Of course, there are plenty of smokys you can throw into the mix too.
"Only today we had someone put $40,000 on the Warriors at $15, so they obviously think guys like Shaun Berrigan and Feleti Mateo will go well."

Raiders sign Orford

BY CHRIS DUTTON, RUGBY LEAGUE
10 Jan, 2011 08:01 AM
The Canberra Raiders' 2011 premiership hopes will be given a massive boost when the club announces the signing of Matt Orford this morning. After almost four months of negotiations, Orford has finally secured a release from English Super League club Bradford and is free to return to the NRL this year.
He is expected to start training with the rest of the Canberra squad tomorrow.
The Raiders were desperate to sign an experienced playmaker to help them become a premiership threat this year.
The need for Orford became even more of a priority when Terry Campese tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the Raiders' semi-final loss to the Wests Tigers last September.
Orford will take over the chief playmaking duties for most of 2011 with halfback Josh McCrone to join him.
Campese is expected to return to the field halfway through the season, but he will not be at his best until the end of the year.
Orford captained Manly to a premiership in 2008.
He has played 239 games in the NRL with the Northern Eagles, the Melbourne Storm and Manly.

Best. News. Ever.

This will go a long way to help us retain our up and coming players over the next two years.

Took a while but woohoooo indeed. McCrone will benefit a lot and he will get to play in his preferred position and for once we will have a halfback heading into a season.

let's just hope he can stay on the field and injury free.

one aspect of campo's injury that many have overlooked is his defensive work that will be missed. Even though his position is at 5/8 he plays like a lock. The back row is going to have shoulder the extra work which will probably mean a lot of game time for Tongue and Fensom.

There isnt another 5/8 in the NRL that can defend like Campo , so losing Campo was always going to be an adjustment in defence.

We will miss his defence but hopefully not too much.

Agreed on the defence aspect, he is the only "back" I've ever seen do three 1 on 1 tackles in a row...

Oh and I posted this earlier but I guess it didn't stick, why only one year? Hopefully we have the option for another should we want first dibs on his services again...

There have been different reports on how long it is for. Has it been confirmed that its 1 or 2 yet?
