How many young kids nowadays make it into the NRL?

The only ones that do are extremely gifted, or, the club has given them a chance and are prepared to give them a few years to let them grow into it. Where do the rest go? They leave and get full time jobs because the sport doesn't give them time to get experience and / or the sport is designed in a way that they could never get a start because they would be playing against NRL hardened men that would destroy the smaller / younger ones coming through.

Only gifted athletes make it in professional sports these days!! What a horrible future we live in.

What sour grapes ?
I'm presuming the Cowboys would have to be a bit bitter about it, missing out on a signing or retention never feels great, especially a talented junior. If not, so be it, but that's claiming to be nearly inhuman. I'd expect any club to be a bit sour about it immediately after the fact.

No need to be so defensive. How about the rest of the post - the actual substance, do you think the Cowboys are better off with a depth outside back or a prop that can contribute in the Top 17 every week? We can and will offer you the latter for the former.

I think we need a prop/second rower with the retirement of Hannant.

The question for me is, do they Knights have anyone that we would want?

You don't think it's sad we can't get talented players in our sport because everyone already playing lifts 200kgs whilst eating their weetbix in the morning?

Because that's whats happening.

You don't have to be a good footballer anymore to play NRL, you just have to weigh 150kgs and be able to catch a ball.

I don't think so re: OP, remember Karl Filiga?

If a club can pay it, so be it. If a kid can earn the money without playing more than 2 games, go for it - he could have a career ending knee injury on his first game with his new club - make hay while the sun shines.

lol @ half the thread being unable to discuss a topic because it was raised by a broncos fan, does everyone in this forum have some sort of geniused ass broncos tunnel vision?

Can't see why they would release him to the knights for next year. He looks like a handy backup for their backline and next year is their last genuine go at a premiership for a while.

Releasing him would also encourage more of this signing players 12 months in advance bullshit and make his agent look like a genius. I prefer the idea of him staying in NQ and gradually learning to loath his agent for not being able to get him out.

Just read the shit Colman wrote in the CM. It's had to know where to start. I mean, it's one thing to make it into Qld thing and ramp up the bias accordingly, but to suggest NRL clubs will be lining up to kick the NRL bosses over this has to be one of the most laughable things ever printed. As others have said, no mention of Hayne signing for an NRL owned club when the rules didn't even allow for it, but apparently a kid who may not even make it to 50 first grade games signing for the Knights is turning the game on its head and it's all unfair. It even goes as far as to suggest it undermines the develpment of the new stadium in Townsville! What the f**k is this union apologist Murdoch arselicker on? Even Cowboys fans and Qlders in general should be embarrassed by this crap.

Hahahahahahahaha!!! Of course you somehow manage to turn this back to your little Hayne tanty.

"Somehow". Yeah how did i do that? A story about a bloke signing for an NRL owned club relating to a bloke signing for an NRL owned club.

I wasn't even the first to connect the two cases on here but my enlightening of the Hayne rule has obviously left an impression on you that you can't get over.

Right

So you have a conspiracy theory with nothing to back it up

There is no way we can match the Knights deal

To be frank if there is anyone feeding the courier mail (a Brisbane paper) shit about this it would be the Broncos. If he backs out of the Knights I'd imagine the Broncos would b favourites to sign him.

Look, now I've gone and accused the Broncos of leaking stories to the courier mail
Quick question, which Sunday paper, the traditional day for big sports news, is available in Townsville?

Follow up. Who owns the local paper in Townsville?

Too many penalties and brain explosions

We could take the Saifiti brothers off your hands though

Wow, why is there such unusual interest in this Ponga situation in particular? Many a young player showing promise has signed on for a big dollar elsewhere. Can't fault the kid for taking $600K a year, even if it is at Newcastle who lets face it have already hit rock bottom and can't really fall much further.

The Cowboys and their fans understandably are let down by him leaving after bringing him on into grade. That's natural.

The Knights haven't done anything that any other club hasn't done. They've snagged a good young player on a long term deal and hopefully he is the goods and the Knights come out ahead on their gamble.

Broncos fans singing the blues about their junior players being pilfered while sharing their city with a grand total of zero teams can go get f**ked.

IMO the thing that makes the negotiation a bit more tipped in our favour than it should be is that you blokes have maybe one or 2 seasons of premiership window left open. We'll be happy enough to wait until 2018 if you guys think you can find better than Sims on the open market for 2017. We're in no real rush for Ponga, from a fans perspective it would just be nice to watch him play for us sooner rather than later. Having him play with JT up there is hardly the worst consolation prize for us.

You won't be getting a Saifiti, lol. If we have to wait, we have to wait.
