Some at the Wests Tigers last year - both in the playing group and head office - questioned Maguire’s stomach for the fight when reports emerged that he had thrown his hat in the ring for other jobs.
Maguire admits he questioned his ability to succeed in the task of turning the joint venture into the powerhouse it could be given its membership and junior nursery. But he insists that, in the end, it only strengthened his resolve.

Typically slimy media merkins. I never heard anything or read any articles about Madge leaving since he came on board. Our board finally showed some common sense and extended him and now hopefully the players buy into his vision and can repay his willingness to help our club succeed by performing on the pitch.

‘I’m not dealing with kids here’: Maguire lifts lid on player power at Tigers
By Michael Chammas
February 14, 2021 — 7.48pm

There’s a perception of Michael Maguire that the coach just can’t shake. Nor does he care to.

In the last two seasons, that perception has arguably cost the Wests Tigers the signatures of several big-name stars reluctant to become just another chapter in the story of the intense, ruthless coach who pushes his players to the brink - and sometimes beyond.
Last year, at the risk of losing his job, which has since been secured in the form of a two-year extension, Maguire drove his players beyond their comfort zone. Some turned on him.

"I was aware," Maguire admitted of the growing unrest in the playing group towards him. "I was well aware. We were pushing boundaries that we hadn’t pushed before. But we have to push the club to a higher level. If we keep doing things the same, we will get the same result."
When the Herald sat down to interview Maguire recently, it was apparent that little is known about the coach and his interests away from rugby league.

"You probably don’t ask the right questions," Maguire fires back. "You always want to go to the other stuff. I’ve got plenty of different interests."
But even when asked the "right questions", Maguire reverts back to an old school give-em-nothing approach that - for the most part - has served him well throughout his coaching career.

"It’s nothing that I want to share," he says. But it’s that very demeanour that amplifies a perception that is backed up by the stories of boa constrictors and baseball bats in dressing rooms, or how South Sydney players used to get fined for using certain words in the media.

"If they are doing it on the park, doesn’t that do the talking?" Maguire asks. "I get we need to do our part to promote the game and those sorts of things, but the success on the park is what creates the greatest ride.

"If I see my players successful and the boys enjoying the ride of what happens when you win a grand final, they get to see what’s real. Because I saw a lot of fans [at Souths] enjoying that ride. They are the ones I care about. I saw a lot of Souths fans living in hope. It went from hope to actually believing it. Then it was that belief that helped us achieve it. That’s more special than people knowing about what I do away from footy.
"The players may say certain things about how hard it was, but I tell you when they were doing that lap around that field with the trophy on grand final day, it was a pretty great moment. They are things this club deserves. That’s why I was so keen to come here."

On day one of pre-season, following a year of stories questioning his coaching methods and their effectiveness on the modern-day footballer, Maguire addressed a squad shorn of over 1000 games of experience. While his demands had previously been met with raised eyebrows by senior players, his audience is now largely receptive.

“I think we all know times have changed and you need to handle each person in a different light,” Maguire said. “But I’m also dealing with men. I’m not dealing with kids here. It is the responsibility of the senior guys to set a tone around what they want to achieve. If they go after that and they set standards, it influences the young ones.
“You’re growing these men to take ownership of what they are doing. We need leaders to help these younger generations realise that life is not easy. There are challenges, but if you fight through those challenges, it’s amazing what you can achieve.”
Maguire won’t go into detail about how his once-strong relationship with Tigers legend Benji Marshall deteriorated after he dropped the five-eighth following the round four loss to the Gold Coast Titans.

But Maguire made no apologies when asked if he made unnecessary changes that ultimately led to the players, in a private team meeting, admitting they were “walking on eggshells” around their coach.

“I’ve come to the club to make it successful,” Maguire said. “Did I make change for stimulation last year? Yeah, I did. At times it worked, at times it didn’t. But if you keep doing the same you’ll end up the same. I think sometimes you have to be able to get people out of their comfort zone to go to another level.”

"Along the way people are going to talk and chatter and ask questions," Maguire said of the speculation that he was looking for another job.

“Did I have thoughts around how large the challenges ahead of me were going to be? Definitely, I’m not going to lie about that. When I sat down and the Wests Tigers became a club that was available to come to, it was the one I actually wanted. I see the size of the club and the momentum that will get behind the Wests Tigers is enormous. I feel that’s coming.

"Have I seen the change as fast as I would have liked? Probably not. There are more challenges in this job than what I’ve experienced before, but we will make this club successful."

New recruit James Tamou says he's excited and honoured by the opportunity to lead a young Wests Tigers side in 2021.

The 32-year-old was announced as captain by the club on Friday — only a handful of months after joining from the Penrith Panthers — but told Wide World of Sports 2GB Radio of his excitement to lead from the front in his new colours this year.

"It's nerve-wracking when you go to a new team," he said, "but it's a young team here and the boys are really respectful so they made it easy.

"When Madge announced the captaincy, I got goosebumps and I was shaking.

"Just to be leading such a young and enthusiastic team is exciting.

"I've only been here a short time but the players have shown me what it's like to represent the Wests Tigers jersey.

"I've adopted that and I'm willing to take it on."

Behind-the-scenes in Tamworth!

Having led a young Panthers outfit on a record-breaking win streak to a Grand Final appearance, the 32-year-old noted similarities between the two sides but emphasised the extra passion on display throughout the pre-season.

"I've only got good things to say about this group," Tamou said.

"The past is what we know it is here but the fire still burns in the belly and the team rips in every session. The young ones are even stronger than me so it's a real honour to lead this group.

"I think the leadership group that Madge has appointed is such a relief because it's something I can lean on during the season.

"Madge has definitely done the work with this squad but the boys have also put in the work this pre-season and I'm excited to see how this season goes.

"It's an honour to lead such a proud group and have no doubt we'll be ripping in."

Gotta love how these clowns always say they are leaving because they want to play Finals football, when arguably it is partly their fault that we have missed the 8.

‘It was immature’: New Eagle Aloiai mows down Tigers hierarchy
By Christian Nicolussi
February 15, 2021 — 6.00pm

Manly recruit Josh Aloiai has taken a pot-shot at Wests Tigers hierarchy by labelling some of their commentary around his swift exit at the end of last season as “immature”.

Aloiai deliberately bit his tongue when he became public enemy No. 1 at the Tigers as he agitated for an immediate release to join the Sea Eagles.

The Tigers made it known at the time Aloiai was chasing better money, that CEO Justin Pascoe had received a text message saying “I’ll never wear the jersey again”, and how chairman Lee Hagipantelis famously declared “he is either a Wests Tiger or he is mowing the lawns at Leichhardt or Campbelltown or painting the change rooms at Concord — as long as he fulfils his contract”.

Aloiaisaid he had no issues with the Tigers playing group, but had clearly lost respect for a couple of officials as he felt like he was on the end of a “character assassination”.

He responded to Hagipantelis’ lawnmower jibe by posting a meme of him mowing the lawn and the caption , ‘I’ll make sure it’s a super fast track boys’.

“It was immature and it didn’t help,” said Aloiai, in regards to Hagipantelis’ comments. “It fuelled the furnace and gave a lot of people ammo.

“I’m really happy with the way I went out. I got to keep my integrity the way I went out and I chose not to get into a media battle.

“For the first part it [the criticism] was something you can take personally, that whole character assassination. And that was exactly what was happening.

“But the more I thought about it, my friends and family know who I am and what I’m about, and it’s their opinions that really matter.″⁣

Hagipantelis told the Herald on Monday: “Josh represents our past - we are focused on the present and our future. I wish him all the very best. I’m sorry he seems to feel somewhat aggrieved, but I’m very comfortable with the way the matter was dealt with by the club.”

When asked what he would do if he bumped into Pascoe and Hagipantelis next Saturday when Manly and the Tigers trial, Aloiai said: “It is actually a really good question. I personally would be man enough to be civil.”

Aloiai stood to earn around $350,000 this year at the Tigers, and was negotiating an upgrade for around $450,000 in 2022 and 2023. Manly, flush with funds because of Addin Fonua-Blake’s exit, were happy to pay closer to $600,000 a season.

Aloiai, however, denied he had cashed in with a bumper deal at Brookvale. “That’s a lie,” he said.

The chance to play finals football, he said, was a bigger motivating factor, especially given he was yet to do that in five seasons at the Tigers.

“Look at the roster here - it is exciting,” Aloiai said. “There’s Tom Trbojevic, who in my opinion is the best fullback in the game.

“You have got Kieran Foran and ‘Cherry’ [Daly Cherry-Evans] who have won a comp together. I have nearly played 100 NRL games and haven’t played finals footy. I want to play finals football. I feel like we are going to be able to do that here - I am confident that here at Manly we will play finals football.″⁣

Aloiai said Tigers coach Michael Maguire “played a big part in his development” and he was upset with his decision to leave for Manly.

“People don’t know that he initially was disappointed with me and said there would be a missing piece once we start back and you are not part of the puzzle,” Aloiai said.

“He did wish me and my family the best. Me and him finished with a phone call. We had a good talk. That’s when I say there is a lot more to it - there’s no bad blood between me and the players and also the coach.″⁣

..Now there’s some motivation for us to get into the 8.
We just need Manly to miss out on the 8 as well. There’s got to be some chance of both those happening

Would be a good day ....MF

Of course it was about the money.

I recall his mature approach to negotiations:

He is your typical footy or ditch digger dip shit but little man syndrome Lee needs to learn to save his big noting for the court room. Some of his comments were embarrassing.

Yes-as soon as Lee starts on, you know the outcome will be that the subject player has either packed his bags or isn’t coming.

I’m not saying his heart isn’t in the right place, but he gets it completely wrong and it’s generally humiliating and deeply shameful when he backs down.

He’d be better to stop cheerleading and trying to seem tough, when behind his back, his white flag is crisply ironed and ready to raise as soon as the situation becomes remotely unpalatable.

Our renegade chair part of the rich tapestry of the club I suppose. We all know he can’t help himself and nothing will change. Just the way it is.

From what Lee said, from memory and from the article, I thought it was a good mix of class and keeping it real and long over due...Unless I missed something ..
This wasn’t just a friendly can I please leave early scenario from Aloiai

I agree with that, but Lee told the world that allo would be mowing lawns for the season and instead he was chauffeur driven out of concord within the week or so. The gear steward barely had time to ask for his wide brimmed hat back.

A lot of the forum here called it as soon as it all exploded!

Lee’s a good bloke, his dedication and cash support is first rate.... but he needs longer term vision. He shouldn’t be getting his hands grubby with these player shenanigans.

He should be more statesman-like. Like the Governor General. Chill and drink martini’s with other league nobility, discuss the vagaries of last years Rolex British Polo championship season. Generally stay clear of club business so he can do no harm. He’s not here to make decisions, but to be a figurehead.

Club pr would appreciate it anyway!

Do u think Aloiai and Matterson leaving was coincidence. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t. I know they were best friends. And likely still talk..

A new Identity is what we need so players at least have second thoughts before they pull this shit...I like what Lees doing. Do you think Pascoe would even know what to say without tripping over himself and weakening the WT brand even further...

With Aloiai saying he’d never play for WT again just coz he didn’t get what he wanted now! he got what he deserved and then on top of that...

Hagipantelis told the Herald on Monday: “Josh represents our past - we are focused on the present and our future. I wish him all the very best. I’m sorry he seems to feel somewhat aggrieved, but I’m very comfortable with the way the matter was dealt with by the club.”

Beautiful...

u wanna be lead by what U really think, not the rest of the forum - (only coz u mentioned them in your post)

Ok point, but I can like people for some of their attributes but not their other qualities.

I think that’s a fair position.

Like I was proud of Mbye caring about us fans even if his game has gone to pieces.

Lee is a good sponsor and the club is humming, but he says dumb things when he doesn’t need to. Then it looks like rubbish when his bravado fails.

Theres good and bad in people.

He played hard ball with Allo, but should have left that to officials. He is club leader, I expect these crass comments and hollow promises to be beneath him.

He would be better off commenting on things he can deliver. Let’s not forget the Latrell fiasco and the face we lost.

That is my opinion.

Mr nice guy..You can handle me so that’s cool

At least they are making sure mistakes made, arnt being repeated. Now, Pascoe welcomes players, Lee tells them to fk off (while Madge keeps the love going just in case for the future), Hartigan recruits and now hopefully Madge does what he’s supposedly good at and coaches us to top 8 then 6 then 4

They’ve got a system now and it resembles rock solid..

To be fair to Lee, he puts his money in (as major sponsor) and is the Chairman, I believe we needed, I have no problems with what he says. The guy heads a big law firm, I'm sure he knows what to say and what not to say? I love his passion. I notice that we don't really cop much or any flack from the press these days, which I am pretty sure he had a lot to do with that.

I think Aloiai is a dick, we play Manly in the major trial, can't wait to see what happens.

Allo and the cat should get a room!

I’ve spoken before about Allied Express and what great sponsors and people they are. This includes “quiet “ generosity, good deeds they never broadcast.
And so far as I am aware, they are not about to interfere with club business. That’s good sponsor loving along with Brydens and our other heroes.

Do we use Allied at work? Of course.

No one wants to take on a Lawyer with cheep shots and all the rest of what we have had to deal with. In case they slip up. That’s what we need. Someone who knows the law, can get the message across, hit them hard if they deserve it, lay on the bullshit charm when needed but always tough as teak..Lee is a Bonus for us. Sometimes that’s just how things turn out. And I’m sure it was discussed that we can use his skills before he came on board..there should be no apologies if we want to get somewhere really special...and better still, I think he enjoys doing it...The alternative is Pascoe

I would not have written Latrell a blank cheque or threatened Allo with the lawn mower.

When they sign on, I’d make sure all players sign a non-denigration clause once they leave (or are sacked) to shut their sorry asses up and stop defaming us with their whinging shite.

Low standards, never make the finals, boo hoo it pisses us off.

Lee’s a lawyer ....and he didn’t think of that. Mmmm

Is such a clause like that allowed? :joy::joy::joy: It would get out somehow.
