Ranking Mark Gasnier

At his best, Gasnier >>> Lyon. And maybe even Gasnier >>> Hodges.

Gaz was awesome at his peak, no doubt. The most dangerous centre that ive seen. Was equally adept at breaking the line and stepping the fullback for a 50 yard try as he was at sucking in his oppositie centre and winger and sending his outside man away with a sensational ball.

In terms of consistency though, id take Hodges over him as the best centre of the last 10-15 years.

I agree. I think Manly has got more value out of Lyon as well.

Great player who got cut down by injuries, poor decisions and of course the 'Brown Polish' (I mean moving him to 5/8 ffs).

Loved watching him in full flight but that was a rare thing.

That Dragons 05/06 side must be one of the biggest underachievers the game has seen.

If I recall he was the one that wanted to try his hand at 5/8.

Didn't start well with the torn pec in any case.

As for the 05/06 side underachieving - had they got to the GF they probably would have beaten Brisbane for the fourth time that year.
Got blocked by a team later found to be over the cap though.

Couldn't give a shit where he ranks in comparison to others. I'll just remember him tearing opposition teams to threads, and smile.

not better than Big Mel Meninga, Steve Renouf, even Ruben Wiki I would rate ahead of Gasiner.... Jamie Lyon is another one that is consistent & not injury prone.

He could never read the play in defence; GI made him look so ordinary so many times and I'm a NSW supporter. A good centre, at best. Would not have been good enough to lace up his Uncle's boots.

Wiki? Great in the forwards, forgettable in the centres.

Gasnier one on one was better than Hodges, who, through a couple of sub standard years, is slipping in my estimations. But the one bloke I compare Gasnier to is Matt Gidley. Not as good one on one, but heaps better at promoting hs winger.

Having seen ET and Steve Rogers, Gasnier doesnt rate. But over his time, he can probably be called the best.

As a player, he was very good. He could've been one of the greats except for injuries and poor decisions.

As a person, I like him on FOX more than when he was a player.

I'd take him back in a heart beat (although he is too old now). It's a case of you don't know what you've got until it's gone, which means he was a good centre.

I think he'd make a great coach, but why would you put yourself through that shit if you're on a good wicket in the media.

He had a wicked step but at in 2005 the Eels showed that if you made him make tackles (attack his side) then his defence was weak and his attack greatly suffered.

I'd take Lyon or GI over Gasnier. Plenty of past players I'd take over Gasnier as well (Meninga, Ettingshausen, Hill).

He wouldn't be in the top 30-40 centres of all time tbh.

One trick pony, very average defender, could never dominate at rep level/on the big stage.

No way behind Lyon .. he's ahead of Lyon, at least on par with Hodges.

None of them are as good as Inglis, though.

I am not sure where people get off questioning his defence. He is the only centre that has held his own at origin level against Inglis.

Overall better than Lyon, on par with Hodges.
