Mary has killed Widdop's career mainly because Mary is incapable of recognising each players strengths and weaknesses.
When Bennett designed his game plans he took into consideration Soward's strengths and weaknesses and kept on challenging Soward to improve on his weaknesses. When Soward moved on, he was a more confident and better defender than when he arrived at the Dragons. In the end, his back injury to limit his desires to perform well in defence.
Widdop needs to be given space to play as a running five-eighth and be given room to move/kick. Dugan is much more effective in broken play or also when given room to wind up. The game against Penrith, with our forwards dominating, is the exact environment that suits our attack. But unfortunately that situation is not always going to evolve and a good coach would know that and design a B plan for the team to adjust on the day.
In my opinion Widdop will not be at the Dragons in 2018 mainly because he is asking too much coin and his ability to shine is limited to a very narrow set of circumstances. In the same way, unless Dugan backs down on his 1m p/a salary demand, he also will not be at the Dragons in 2018. Milne at right centre and a new BIG left centre will be what will be required in 2018 with plenty of cap to meet this requirement.
Mann should be retained and I believe any new coach will quickly move to keep Milne and Mann however, Lafia and a number of others will be moved on. The focus should be on stacking our squad with players with size and speed and the skill set to perform well at first grade level. We already have a couple of light weight players who have that x factor but are still to prove themselves at first grade level. Maybe Field and Dufty will be given that opportunity in 2017.
