That's fair enough, you have some good thoughts there. I was envisioning him not so much as a current style 5/8 but almost like a ball playing lock like Poppa Clay. I like the idea of a 5/8 who can physically poke through the line in close and then ball play. I know this isn't exactly how Morgan and Austin play but they are very physical and strong.

If you are building a team where your game plan requires an elusive 5/8, I can see how he wouldn't fit. And I don't necessarily dislike a quicksilver player in there. Where I thought there might be good value is Dugan running off him.
I think that the reason Morgan and Austin work at 6 is because they have those extra yards of pace that wade is lacking, as well as the other traits you mention.

Don't get me wrong though. I've always thought wade was special. Would love to see him at 11 for us and I think the NSW selectors have overlooked their best left edge option for a long time.

Wouldn't mind seeing him pop an inside ball to Dugan either. Those two coming at you is the stuff that defenders nightmares are made of.

Thanks for the sensible discussion, we can have different ideas and that's OK. I appreciate the fact that this didn't fall into some of the derogatory argument that happens so often. We are all St George supporters, we all have valid thoughts and we should be able to air them and discuss them without someone trying to bully you into giving up your position.

No worries mate. It's a shame this place reaches a point where you even feel the need to say that.

Ive been guilty of bad behaviour in here, I've found a good solution though. I've taken to stirring up the souths forum instead. It's incredibly therapeutic. I highly recommend it.

Personally I think Cordner is better left edge player. Not that it's any slight on Graham, he's very very good. Unfortunately, he comes in second best in a position that requires an 80 minute player.

On Carltons point, one of the concerns for next year is lack of ball players. Hunt is the lynchpin and will play both sides of the ruck, and while our 5/8 (be it Widdop, Mann or Field) is a good option as an second receiver, we need 1 more. I'm ok with Dugan not being that guy (or being that guy sporadically) but we'll need centres or backrowers with some ball skills.

Becomes even more difficult with Mary's limited/rigid style, but that's a whole other issue.

I didn't understand the selectors fascination with cordner until the last game last year. He really stood up.

Having said that, I still prefer graham as a player. The guy is a footballer, super skillful, great reader of the game, and hits hard. I see cordner as more of a straight up and down player. What he does he does well, and you can expect him to work for you all game and run good lines.

I think the nsw side suffers from a similar lack of creativity to us. For that reason I think they should use graham on the edge, but then sometimes I think Cordner should play the full 80 and do his thing.

It's probably a moot point, because I think the most likely team for this year will be Daley trying to recreate some of the old roosters plays:

3. Jennings
6. Maloney
7. Pearce
11 Cordner.

Plus the below missing jigsaw

1. Tedesco
2. Morris
3. Jennings
4. DUGAN
5. Fergurson
6. Maloney
7. Pearce
11 Cordner.

So are you saying he doesn't have the skill set for a 5/8 or that he is the wrong shape?

I was making my comment on the thoughts that he has the skills of a 5/8 and I like the idea of a strong player in the halves a bit like Morgan or Austin. I don't think a player should be pigeon holed based on what he is doing, should be looking at what he can potentially do.
I am saying he is a 2nd rower that was always destined for that position and has made it in that position. Why try and change him back into a 5/8?

How much is he asking and who could we get for similar coin?
Brissy I know for a fact that he has asked the dragons for 1 million a season. And I also know for a fact that there is no way in hell that he is in their plans for the future

I could bang on all day about NSW issues. The 2 biggest ones are selection (as you alluded to) and coaching.
On the selection side, they have this obsession with picking players with ridiculous justifications, like Reynolds/Ennis/Jackson and co because they are 'built for origin', Pearce for any number of bullshit reasons to justify picking him over the years, and even now guys like Jennings and Fingerson because they havent completely cocked up over the years. In reality, most of the guys selected this year wont be the best or even the best in-form in their position. Cordner is actually a prime example - one of the best edge backrowers in the comp, yet for years he played off the bench in the middle. It's like no thought goes into any of it.

And with coaching - well, Daley is Mary MkII, obsessed with an outdated structure with absolutely no back up plan. I watched 2 games live last year and everyone could see that QLD were/are ripe for the picking through the middle of the park, yet we keep trying to go around them and getting shut the f**k down with ease. Just so damn infuriating.

Anywho, as I said I could rant about those ass clowns all day. Eventually though, I may have to admit it's just me - between the Dragons, NSW and Tigpies being an honorary second team of mine (thanks to my Tigers supporting wife) it seems I end up following all the idiot teams with useless set ups full of old boys looking out for themselves. So sad.

But anyway...how about that Widdop! 11/10.

Anyone know when Glenn01 will be out of respite care?
Obviously Widdop's good form has taken its toll on him and he is either resting up and looking for a way to get back to his vitriolic best or he's trying to find a less obvious way of creating a new identity.
Widdop's form to Glenn01 must be like garlic bulbs to Dracula a wonderful repellant.

I don't think its such a big jump with the way he plays and Hunt and McInnes there to direct things. De Belin's strength is not ball playing and our secondrowers aren't ball players and neither is Aitken. I would like to see a big strong ball player on the edge working in and behind the line with our secondrowers.

If you don't think its Wade Graham that's fine, who would you like to see as 5/8?
