Benny probably cruelled his chances when he admitted to biting his own hand in order to get Mario Fenech sent off in a semi final.

That is the Benny Elias equivalent of Maradona: 'Hand of God'.
This one is Benny: 'Hand of Dog'.

Not even close. Played 22 Origins and 14 Tests. That does not sound like an under-rated player to me. More likely the opposite. For a hooker who didn't receive the accolades he deserved, I'd go for Luke Priddis.

Rating, underrating, meh. How you judge a man is on who had the better nickname

On the one hand we have back door Benny
On the other Priddis didn't warrant one and was probably called Priddsy (unimaginative modern footballers) If they'd called him Cool hand Luke or even Newman then that would have sealed it

As it is, Back Door wins the day

Better than some wanker who failed his second year apprenticeship exams in plumbing.....

.....Who ran rings around Terry Lamb in the Canterbury-Bankstown B grade competition in the late 1970s.

On field, Benny Elias was talented no doubt about it. He could play at hooker and had good enough ball skills that he played a few games at halfback for the Tigers also.

He did, however, have a bit of a reputation for being selfish when on the field. One of the great stories told about him is what Phil Gould did when he became Origin Coach in 1992. At their first training session for NSW, Gould took out two rugby league balls and said "Ok boys, we'll train with this one whilst the other one is for Benny to play with". He was making it clear he wanted Benny to pass the ball.

Ben changed the way hooker is played.

Before him they were hard nosed tackling machines, with great scrimmaging skills.

Ben made dummy half an attacking position like none before him.

They also change the striking rule as Ben would steal the ball quite often from lazy players.

Love or hate him, he changed the game. I can give no bigger compliment.

Wasn't even the best of his era. How he kept getting picked for Origin over Mario Fenech is a complete mystery? Fenech was twice the footballer Benny was.
