I had to stop and think which Gower people were talking about.

No, he's not in the argument.
Exactly you can add Priddis to the list as well...

Saying that though Gower was the last NSW player to captain Australia...

Craig Gower is neither Lebanese nor Maltese. He is Italian, and captained Italy in rugby union. The only thing he has in common with Benny Elias is their Christian heritage, and the fact that both loved their mothers. But Gower was primarily a scrum half not a hooker, which makes all comparisons with Benny Elias null and void.

I don't know if Gower and Elias are really all that comparable in the sense that Benny played during the 5 metre rule and Gower? he player in the 10 metre rule era. Very different positions/era's.
Gower probably ran a faster 20 metre dash but Benny had all the skills (he was a footballer) and, at least to the best the public could tell, loved his mother more than Gower his.
The number of ways that Benny could influence the game need to be noted. He wasn't just a guy who ran from DH after a fast play the ball. He was a play maker, a creator, a footballer.

It's funny but a lot people forget Kerrod Walters was really good at the start of his career. And he had a blinder in the 1989 series which QLD won 3-0. Then he was suspended for a incident against Wests which resulted in him missing origin and he could never get his spot in the QLD team back after that as Steve Walters would always be chosen ahead of him.

Kerrod never gets talked about as being one of the best and he really was looking like he could be anything when his career started but by the end of his career he became a bit of an afterthought.

Kerrod was quicker with his darts out of dummy half but nowhere near as strong or smart as Steve, nor was he as good as Steve in defence. He also had a shitty mulletesque haircut.

Kerrod missed the first game of the 1990 series and was replaced by Steve. Kerrod took his spot back in games 2 and 3 of that series which QLD lost. He was also selected for Australia for the mid season test, and made the Kangaroo tour at the end of the year. Steve was overlooked completely for the 1990 Kangaroo tour which was a travesty at the time. Kerrod lost his spot to Elias on the tour after failing in the first test.

The year after Steve took the hooker spot in the QLD (during that Kerrod suspension) & Aus sides and never looked back. After that, Kerrod only ever played rep footy in the 91 Aus tour of PNG, and 1 origin game in 94 when Steve was injured.

Gower and Elias can be easily compared, I am not talking as players but as dickheads and although you can easily qualify gower as a dickhead, Elias was worldclass one of the biggest ever to play the game.

Steve Walters on the other had a good guy

Was Benny the best charge downer'er in the games history? Maybe that Steve Price guy. I don't know, but it is a debate that I think needs to be had. I can't even think of any other charger downerers.
Anyone?

The only Rep memory I have of Craig Gower was him stinking up the Roos 7 when a pretty ordinary NZ side won the 4 nations 24-0 in 2005.
