That’s in your opinion, any of the good judges have him in the top two back rowers in the game. Go figure.

He plays the most minutes of any of our second rowers, and has the least impact in almost every measurable metric.
He's also our most expensive second rower.

Most of the negative sentiment towards Martin is because of his relative output to value - especially compared to Garner, who is super cheap, versatile, and outscoring Martin all over the park - yet being moved on.
It makes no sense from a cap management OR performance perspective.

Marto on fire is epic but we don't see it enough. I love the bloke but he's not earning his wage really.

He’s just too banged up to be an effective backrower anymore. The bloke’s given everything and in his prime was an absolute weapon on the edge. But he’s living off his name and is no longer in the top 10 backrowers in the game. He’s not breaking tackles, not running threatening lines, not offloading. Sure he competes for the ball but if you're not able to do much else, you'd expect him too.

That being said, I still think he has plenty to offer in the FR rotation.

Every game in the run in is a danger game, while we are trending in the right direction we haven’t once put a side to the sword. I thought at HT against the Bunnies we were going to come out and put them away by a big margin but we were a tad lacklustre in the second period which was a shame because they were done basically. At some point we need a statement performance, an attacking masterclass, not just grinding out victories. Yes defence wins big games, but you still need to be capable of scoring points and we haven’t really put on a dominant performance in this most recent run of victories.
Little bit of game management in that second half I thought. Just to keep the score respectable.

Kick Chase and line speed is how we’ve won four competitions.

Do you want to keep winning comps or no??

It’s so unbelievable that you guys can’t see how elite he is…. It’s actually mind blowing that anyone would keep Luke Garner over Liam Martin…

That's not the choice though. Keeping Garner level players (who outperforms him 90% of the time anyways) will allow us to keep the second coming of Critter in Casey long term.
Martin is a luxury

Where is the next Martin? We don’t have an adequate replacement for him.

Centres are replaceable, we’d have no issue replacing Casey if he asks for to much money, just as we had no issue replacing Critter.

Elite second rowers are not are not easy to replace.

We already have Garners replacement lined up. That won’t be an issue.

Eh I agree with both sides of this. Martin has had two pretty average regular seasons now. In fact he's been inconsistent most of his career with the exception of maybe a year or so of form when he became recognised as the best edge in the game around 2023 or so. So has Cleary for that matter. I don't think he's strung more than 2 good games together in the regular season since 2021.

We don't pay either to dominate through the regular season though, they're there to take the side up those couple gears no one has been able to follow for the last half decade. Both should have plenty of time off as they're both banged up and get them in when we need them. Over the next month we just need to grind out some underwhelming wins against average opposition and Garner will contribute more to that job than any forward not named Yeo I'd bet. If it means Martin is fresh and pent up to monster people in the finals then great.
