Dugan to make NRL debut

Tuesday, March 31, 2009
Toyota Cup star Josh Dugan will get his chance to shine at Canberra Stadium on Monday night, when he makes his NRL debut for the CFMEU Canberra Raiders against the North Queensland Cowboys.
The Green Machine will also welcome back inspirational skipper Alan Tongue this weekend as he returns from injury, while Adrian Purtell gets a chance to come back into the side after being dropped for last weeks Parramatta match.
The inclusion of Dugan and Purtell in the Raiders backline comes at the expense of David Milne and Brett Kelly, who will now line up for Souths Logan this weekend.
Skipper Tongue will take his place in the Raiders scrum in his usual position of lock on Monday night, with rookie hooker Travis Waddell the 18th man for the match.
Raiders Assistant Coach Ian Millward said Dugan gets his chance to make his debut after some outstanding form at Toyota Cup level, while Purtell also gets his chance after an impressive two try effort for Souths Logan last weekend.
“Josh is a great player and he’s been given the chance this week to make his debut and he’ll be looking forward to it,” Millward said. “Adrian also gets another shot after some good form for Souths Logan and his experience will be a positive against the Cowboys.”

Waddel 18th man, thats a joke, Flannagan should be at Souths Logan this week instead of Waddel 18th man

Flanagan is a real surprise at the moment..... he was a standout in his limited games for the Tigers and looked to be a great pick up for the Raiders. He certainly hasn't lived up to expectations. On Saturday's game Waddell should play....

I agree, Flanagan was ace at Wests when given time but has shown nothing for us.

Still, his Raiders career is only two games old, I can't quite throw him on the scrapheap yet. I definitely agree that Waddell should be in the side, but I think the two should rotate.

What did Milne do wrong , there is no way he should be dropped and Purtell brought back in.
Flanno hasnt delivered this year , and by FG standards he still is a rookie and has plenty to learn. My point he shouldnt be an automatic selection, I know Butts is out but Waddell should figure in the team. Logan will probably come in for Turner but we need Waddell in the 17.

Anyway dropping Milne is a mistake.

Oh Congrats on Doogs getting a gig , hope he rips it up.

I agree and from what I saw last week from Waddell he needs to be in the side this week. My memory isnt the best, but from what i recall he was nice and quick in attack and defensively he was on them like a spider-monkey.

Good to see Dugan in the side! A bit hard on Milne but atleast Dugan gets a run.

BTW first post.

One thing that's got me is, still no sign of the big boys.

Shillo needs someone else to help him take the pressure off. He's the only out-and-out prop in that side. I was hoping to se Logan in the team this week.

Milne didn't have the best of games on the weekend, but given his been particularly solid for us over the last 6 months i probably still would have had him on the wing.

Looks like Tongue will move into hooker when flanagan is off the field with someone rotating into lock. Flanagan is very very lucky to retain his spot.

Hopefully either Logan or Tilse is ready to come in to the starting front row for Miller, who doesn't have the size to start imo.

I've only seen a few Dugan games, but from what i saw he looked to have a bit of playmaking ability. Hopefully he can take some off the responsibility off Campo, because Herbert probably wont..

Wow, just got home and read the team sheet!

I must admit I would have preferred to see Milne and Waddell kept in the team. Gutsy move by Furner.

This will be interesting...

Gutsy or stupid , Hindsight will tell

I havent bagged dave yet , but Im not a fan of dropping Milne and bringing in Purtell.
Purtell wont let anyone down ( i hope ) but he wont be an attacking option that Milne would be

im very very very very happy with the team. best team we have named all year. Milne is unlucky he has Dugan in the same team. If Dugan stays injury/trouble free he will not be replaced!
Milne is not a very good winger although he played most of his career there. Id rather see purts than milne on the wing tbh

Purtell scored two tries for Souths Logan last week..Daniel Joyce was named Man of Match..AND interestingly....Kose Lelai scored a try in Souths Logan reserve grade win.
Kose is a good player, and is back after being banished by the Raiders for off field indiscretions in 2008. He had a good season with Griffith Waratah Tigers in Group 20, as well as gaining selection in the CRL representative team. The boy has talent.
Joel Thommo played with SLM last week, and is back up there this week, as well as Shaun Fensom. Nick Skinner was injured in first game ...think he could be back either this week or the next for SLM.
Watch for D.Joyce to be promoted to the NRL, sooner rather than later if his form continue....

Feel sorry for Milne as he has been quite consistant at fullback...but you've all got to admit that Dugan oozes talent. When I looked at our squad I thought some people were going to be unlucky to miss out this year but although some sides have more 'talent' so to speak, we definately aren't shy of depth. Competition for spots can only be a positive for the green machine.

Somebody mentioned elsewhere that there were a few mitigating factors with milne, such as a few niggles, and that his wife is due to give birth to their first child on monday, so read into that what you will.
