Increase a try to 5 points ... more than 2 penalty goals

It's lose lose though, you make the try more valuable and you increase the defences incentive to infringe, you make the kick more valuable, and you increase the attacks incentive to take the kick.

And yeah, of course it works the other way around as well, you increase the value of a try and you increase the incentive of the attack to have a go, but either way, i don't reckon it changes things a whole lot and if the refs are willing to blow the whistle, we'll see a penalty-a-thon.

f**k off the seven tackle set for kicking it dead or a knock on in goal and I reckon we'd see things settle down a bit, because it takes away a disincentive to have a go, and increases the actual opportunities to score because play makers can then be a little less risk adverse.

If it’s a blatant off side or hold down , Make the penalty goal worth 3 or even 4 points. Might see a whole attitude and cultural change. And it’s not something the attacking side can milk, rests solely on the defence, you would think we will see more tries and less penalties and more game time minutes which ends up a better and more marketable product.

And if merkins like Slater last night fake a dive ( use the bunker to confirm if needed) send him to the bin

And for merkins like Smith who act like a tart and take their time leaving the field, add another 10 to his bin

If merkins want to cheat let them do it and let them cost their side in the process.

The above won’t happen, but the old cliche ...

Same = Same
Change = Different

Make all penalties the differential variety. No goal kicks except conversions. Make the emphasis on scoring trys.

Simple- tries are worth 1 poij t, and penalties/conversions are worth one point.

Billy Slater and Cam Smith are sin binned at least once a match.

And underperforming referees are sacked.

Only one comment is facetious - I'll let you be the judge which it is...

27 games this year and 11 of them have had 20 or more penalties...
The weekend is the worse with 3/3 where at least 20 penalties have been blown.

This is a joke and is ruining our game.

I disagree.
For too long now, too many teams have been abusing the rules and getting away with it. It has led to a very robotic product which had become almost unwatchable to view. Sure, the referees have been taken for ride but they also had themselves to blame for allowing it to happen.
The two biggest blights on the game have been the ruck area and the defensive abuse of the 10 metre rule.
I for one am glad the refs are cracking down on these two issues. Todd Greenburg has come out and said this has come from his orders, but I can't help but wonder how much influence Michael Maguire has had in this crackdown.
There is going to be a settling in period for sure, but I think we will eventually be watching a better product once coaches and players start toeing the line.
Also, just on the kicking for goal from penalties thing (discussed by others), I have no problems with it at all. It's part of the game. 3 times last night (or was it 2?) the Sharks fans cheered when the decision was made to take the kick. Games have been won this season because of it. It's a tactical decision and that's great.

This is the key. I actually think losing possession is such an unfavourable outcome that it leads to negative play (actually everyone seems to think this, so it's nothing new). The solution should be to remove some of the risk from expansive play. Maybe if a team can recover its own knock on they should get to just play-the-ball (after the defence have time to get set) rather than handing it over. Likewise for an attacker running into touch.

They're big changes though, and purists will come with a reason why those rule changes would be objectively worse than the rules they have grown up with.

I do not have a problem with the refs blowing penalties if the aim is to clean up areas of the game that need it, however the number of penalties, the location of them, when in the set they are given, etc. all makes for a game that is being won or lost on penalties and is becoming a joke.

If they are going to crack down on these infringements then they need to start using the sin bin and not just keeping on blowing penalties.

Another problem though, and very closely related to the defensive cheating, is attacking players taking out the markers. There needs to be a clear line - is the tackler entitled to get to marker or is he expected to give up on helping his mates on the next play? If the latter then that makes for a shitty game as well.

That’s the smartest thing you’ve said in awhile. That added with current sin bin willingness of the refs will get rid of many cynical penalties

These players have had years of shit drummed into their heads about stretching the rules. They wont change overnight. And i dont thinking binning the odd player now will change their conditioned ways.... i am content for them to give em a month or 2 and then say, right you've had long enough now you get binned

People whinge about ruck tactics, offside etc etc .... its been allowed to go too long. Its practically part of the game .... i have no problem with a period of penalties to try and stop it

The problem with everything is consistency though .... like how the f**k cronulla were perfect for 50 minutes last week but had 15 penalties against them this week. Im betting their playing style wasnt too different

Poo was right. Kearney can coach. Looks like they found themselves a top fitness coach. Impressive looking team.

Maybe these new (penalties) enforcements on the game suit them to a tee (more times to rest)

they don't seem to be suiting the top 4 sides from last year

Or am I over thinking things?
