We do have centres (in reserve grade) and they have to be better than Jake Arthur at 5/8.

Centre is too important a position to entrust to reserve graders. Merkins are isolated out there. But with a backup half you just give him as much responsibility as he can handle. The rest of the spine takes up the slack.
