Reason for Golden Point Draw Breaker?

I reckon they should just do 10 minutes overtime (5 minutes each way) with no golden anything. Award each team 1 point, and if a team wins in overtime they get 2 points, but the othe team doesn't lose their 1 point.

Which means that at the end of golden point you have a team with 2 points and a team with 1 point, which cannot happen.

you cant have the Panthers and the Dogs get 1 point each at the end of 80 minutes and then give another point to whoever wins in golden point.

Why not?

Every soccer competition in the world offers 3 points in a winning game, and only 2 points in a drawn game and it works perfectly fine. In Rugby you've got a bonus point system where anywhere from 4 to 7 points may be awarded in a single game. Fair enough if you don't like it, but if you're going to say it "cannot happen" then would you care to explain your reasoning behind that??

This was introduced in much the same way as many rules are. Some big mouth in the media gets a hard one about an idea, harps on it and eventually after consulting nobody the league decides to trial it and then introduce it. Draws, teams sharing 1 point each are important in the grand scheme of things, its totally unfair to lose a game in golden point when you have matched them for the 80 mins.

It has added some extra excitement to the game, no doubt, but with every change made to this game the more it stops resembling the great game we grew up watching. One could argue its just as thrilling watching sides try and break a deadlock during normal time as it is in golden point. the Golden Point itself is also extremely infair. introduced based on the same idea in Soccer ( which needed the concept badly ). Having the first scorer win is utterly unfair in RL. You kick off, they kick a FG from your 40m line, so how is that fair at all? If they must have it, have it 5 mins each way, if its still a draw then its a draw. the actual nature of golden point otherwise is always going to leave one team feeling cheated.

As long as they don't make it golden try. A field-goal-shootout beats a professional-foulathon, which is what golden try would be knowing they can't lose the game by penalty goal.

A game of Rugby League goes for 80 minutes, correct?

The idea is to see which team is better after 80mins.

Not after 90mins.

1point each way, end of game.

In Semis - play an extra 10 mins - have to score 2 points or more.

I believe they should follow the soccer way...

For all normal league games a draw is a draw after 80 minutes..

For a SOO or GF etc.. Extra time should be played - not golden point..

Soccer was first to introduce the golden goal concept but has since gone back to old fashioned extra time which has proved to be a more popular concept...

I love golden point.

Golden point has the ability to make ordinary games exciting. The most edge of the seat football you will ever see is the golden point period. It's all or nothing which is why it's so good. Every hit up and every tackle can make or break the games.

A lot of half wits watch the games and need a 'result'. They do not understand that a draw is a legitimate result and would rather see a tough match turn into a field goal shoot-out.

As half-wit money is as good as any money, the lowest common denominator gets catered to, yet again.

Except an draw is still possible after 10 mins of golden point time ,

Spot on.

That plus its an American thing so it must be good. The NFL has it so we should copy.

On golden try - I don't think it would make much difference. Instead of 5 hitups and a field goal shot it would become 5 hitups and bombs away.

1. Soccer is soccer, not Rugby League, a draw is a more common result than a win or loss in that game, so if it suits that game, good for that game.

2. The entire point of introducing Golden Point in the first place was so there would be a "winner" and a "loser" at the end, so you can't have a situation where a "loser" still gets a competition point while the "loser" in another game gets nothing. The whole idea is that the winner gets the two points while the other team gets nothing.

So how about we change the point structure to 4 points per game?

80 minute game: winner - 4 points, loser - 0 points

Golden point extra time: Winner 3 points, loser 1 point

Golden point extra time draw: Both sides 2 points.

I personally had no problems with draws in club games... and hate watching Parra play in golden point. However I must admit when I'm watching a game between 2 sides I'm impartial to, if one side is down by 6 with 5 to go I'll be cheering them on solely because I'd like to see the game go into golden point and a lot of people are the same.

A lot of people don't like a field goal-a-thon but the extra time in the NSW cup grand final last year was one of the most exciting and entertaining passages of play I watched last year.

Id still rather just see 2 points for a win, 0 for a loss and 1 each for a draw. Then if you want to use GP in Finals to decide who procedes to the next round there is no need for competition points at all.

I'm happy with that also. But I think that idea has merit because it keeps all parties happy... For those that enjoy golden point you still get that outcome and reward of points. For those that don't like it, well at least you're rewarded somewhat, and even 1 point out of a potential 4 can be a huge difference come qualification for finals and placings.

but why not? why can't the loser get a point if they were even after 80mins? it's not fair that they are treated the same way as a team who was never in the game. and before you give me a for and against differential answer, or something about what if a team loses with 5 seconds to go or whatever, don't cause that's irrelevant.

i believe in hockey they do something like that, the OT loser gets a point?

thats why the league golden rule is a farce in the normal rounds because there can still be draws even with golden point , and both teams can still be 2 winners and 2 losers and both get point each

Because GP is there to gain a Winner/Loser result. Winners get 2 points, Losers get 0 points, thats it.

If the two teams were even after 80mins then they should both get 1 point and call it a day, but you cant have it both ways. You either go with a draw and split the points OR you have GP to decide a winner and they get the 2 points.

i'd rather 10 straight minutes of extra time and call it whatever result at the end of that.

Golden Point should be Golden Try so we see attacking football.

Are you guys serious about getting rid of Golden Point? If its a draw it feels empty. You doint know if you should feel happy or sad.

True. So we can actually see a general effort to attack with desperation and a mind-set to get a miracle try. Plus, I think the team that losses after the Golden Point Extra Time format deserves a point as they would of gotten something out of the game had it been under the original format.
