Name an example of how they thought they were "bigger than the game". I'm open to be informed, but statements like this are ridiculous unless you have specific examples.

I grew up in Brisbane and although initially a fan for the one season in 1988 my dislike of the Broncos stems from what they did to the QLD Cup competition (was a Wynnum fan). This later grew because of the Super League saga and my opinion that they were again a large part of it.
