Recruitment for 2011

Very disappointed with the half/five-eighth options for next year. No K.Keating, no Feleti. Surely, the people looking after recruitment would have made sure they had a back-up plan. I know Kimmorley, Barrett and Orford's name were mentioned as was Cooper Cronk. But none of these were done deals. Why would you jump the gun??
I know Mortimer, Robson and Humble will be there but what is the plan if there are injuries? Thoughts?

It's very simple to sit back and say the club should have a plan in place. But there are so many factors to consider in contract negotiations that it's not easy. On the other side of what you're saying we could have jumped the gun and paid overs to keep Feleti and KK at the club but that would be equally criticised if their form didn't warrant it, which it didn't.

I think he has released Mateo & Inu because they are both lazy and did not earn their salaries. He's released KK because he thinks Humble is a better long term prospect.

With Shack back and maybe signing a decent winger or two, I don't think we're any worse off TBH. Sign a name player or two and we're far better off. I trust Ando.

Mateo hasn't played halves since 2008? I think? and we were useless that year.
I dont understand why he is continuously listed as a 5/8 that is leaving us.
I would be much more concerned if they had matched the offer and kept him.

Because we have the worst recruitment in the NRL...wait, actually Pentith's is worse.

We wait for players to leave before we start replacing them. We should have been more proactive and gone after players before we lost KK and Mateo.

We should have given JT an offer he can't refuse, or gone after hodgkinson or Barba well before they signed contracts. But now...we have no one.

Need to be PROACTIVE!!

There's a long way to go in our recruitment campaign. Tell me of a club that is better off in this department than we are? Bulldogs maybe, but that's all.
I'll sit back and wait because as Gronk said, I have faith in Ando.

So you would have paid $300K for a rookie to beat the Dogs offer?

Cant we wait and see what the top 25 looks like before the witch hunt?

Just wait and see there are heaps of players off contract and the Storm will still have to let more go.
We haven't missed any boat yet.

At least we have the cash this year and are in the mix. Previous years we were scratching our heads why we were never able to participate in the player market.

We'll be fine. There's plenty of $$$$ for recruitment. I've got faith and Ando and Ossie. Look at last year - everyone thought we were going to sign no-one, then BANG - Poore, Shack and Tahu arrive.

Thats the differance Gronk, in the past we had already spent the next years cap by the middle of July and any last minute off contract players we were never in the market for.
This year is very different, 1. We have plenty of cap space for next year and 2. The storm saga.
I have faith we'll do ok in the player market in the next couple of months.

Looking at my excel spreadsheet regarding our current 2011 squad's salary. From what I've heard the 2011 cap increase has been essentially taken by Hayne's upgrade, and the backloading of Tahu's, upgrade of Morts & Fui and the value adding of Mannah's Origin rep barely touch the space from Cayless's retirement. Add to that the supposed downgrades of Hindy & Burt & the departures of KK, Mateo & Inu (possibly Grothe) and all of a sudden you realise just how much wiggle room we have for next year. We're linked to high profile names (Thurston, Cronk, Barrett+Kimmorley) not cause we just need them but because we have the cap space to fit them in.

And speaking of being proactive, recruitment isn't just about next year (how many players sign 1 year contracts?) but the following years. At the end of next year Matt Keating, Reddy & Mannah are all off contract, therefore 1) we are going to have to upgrade Mannah's contract if he keeps going like he is, so you can't spend your all your 2012 cap space in 2011 & 2) if Keating or Reddy are signed elsewhere or don't fit the team structure then you may want to look at available options (e.g. hooker) for 2012 and again if you spend most of your space in 2011 you may be limited in options

This year in particular... Barrett has retired, no he's signing with us, no he's confirmed retirement, or is he....

No i wouldn't have. He's not worth 300k.

Waiting is the problem...can't just wait for things to fall into place.

If we want a top line half back, we have to go after him. There's no point having all this money if there is no one to spend it on. Why didn't we release someone to keep Kingston last year? we should have in my opinion. I reckon our player recruitment/retention has been terrible over the last 10 years or so. I hope that changes soon.

I can't see us winning a premiership with Morts and Robson in the halves and MK at hooker. Hope i'm proven wrong.
