jeez, i must be getting dementia or something cause thats not how i remember Tate at all. Senility has kicked in already for me. He was an amazing communicator on defence right?

Good communicator and defender.

But would barely pass the ball.

Clearly you have early onset dementia I'm afraid.

Purely hypothetical and scurrilous thinking of it...but as much as I wanted Ivan to stick around, it would've been nice having an 18 year old the calibre of Nathan Cleary too (not that Hingano isn't super talented). That kid plays tough, tough, tough and smart.

Must make a father particularly proud when your 18 year old plays like that in FG, and looks exactly like you to boot

He'd need to change the headless chicken approach before I'd start rating him. That doesn't last long in the NRL. He's not big, either. If he starts developing footwork, an offload etc, great.

Yeah but I think he already has footwork, an offload and ball-playing before the line.

NYC definitely doesn't translate to first grade but Lisone in NYC was the sort of prop who would have 20 runs for 220m, 5 offloads and line-break assists from passing before the line.

I could be misremembering but I don't remember him doing the big Paleaaesina impersonation at all in NYC. I think that's related to him knowing he's only going to get 30 minutes a game and trying, often too hard, to make an impact.

did ivan cleary have sex with himself? there is nothing in nathan but ivan's genes

Haha, so this. I mean, the facial features are so identical it's scary. Big bigger than his old man ever was, but that's a modern-day footballer thing. Same wise head on his shoulders though.

I remember reading on here back when Cleary was coach, about someone leaving a game at Mt Smart and how a kid in front of them was breaking down the game like a veteran coach, including how to fix what was broke. And then the kid turned around and it was Ivan's son.

Now i know how that poster recognized him.

That post flicked through my head as I watched the Panthers game. I think the poster said the kid identified himself as the coach's son, however.

Dean Whare and Peter Hiku both seem to be a bit on the outer at Penrith. I know we seem to be full of outside backs but Whare is pure class. I'd have him in our starting side any day of the week our both Kata and Ayshford. Kata to the wing and Whare into the centres would be a step up. Jays with the bullocking runs and Whare's running lines and silky hands

What makes you think they're on the outer?? They've both had their seasons ended by injury... Whare is all class, but don't see Penrith letting him go...

They might offload Matagi and Latimore - the latter goes ok, better than Gubb/Gavet, but not really our need

You think Hiku and Whare are going good at the Panthers though?

I seen Hiku and he's been WORSE than Ayshford and Kata. He doesn't do much for the Panthers to be honest.

Whare I like. Good defence as we know but can be a bit greedy for a centre SOMETIMES.

Both aren't playing first grade though and the Panthers are doing good. Why's that? They injured?

I wouldn't take both Whare and Hiku. Considering what we currently have slready signed up, we only have space for probably 1 more centre/ outside back. I'd definately be keen on Whare though. He's still got plenty of years in him and often centres come into their prime in their late 20's. He's 26yrs old and 6ft 1" tall.

Me saying they're in the outer at Penrith is more that they've signed up a few other players to big $$$, Tamou namely, and upgraded a few others as well. They've just signed Hardacker from the UK and he plays similar positions. I can see either Whare or Hiku defiantly being offered around before seasons out.

Re Kata and Ayshford being better, I'm yet to be convinced. Whare is pretty much a Kiwi's 1st choice when fit. To me Kata is a winger wearing a centres jersey. He doesn't pass or set up his outsides. He's a crash through the line and finished type player. I'd have him on the wing over Maumalo any day of the week. Put a real centre on his inside and that would be a combination worth building our left edge around.

Think they've only signed Hardaker to the end of the year as a replacement, given they're both out for the year. And Segeyaro has been cut loose...

That said, if Hardaker is a success (Sam Tomkins says hello) Hiku could be the one on the outer - they have Moylan, DWZ, Mansour, Whare and perhaps Hardaker, plus their versatile and skilful forwards...

I would suggest that if Hardaker is a success as a replacement centre this season and they retain him, he will then shift to his favoured position of fullback, making way for Hiku & Whare to return and allowing Moylan to finally play in the halves where he belongs.

Fairly big 'if', though - Hardaker's not coming with form. He's been quite bad this year for Leeds.

No to Hiku, yes to Whare.. but with the form of Ayshford we aren't desperate for a centre anyway. I want another dominant middle forward before anything else - after that then outside back cover.

How long was the contract signed when stuck with the cowboys. Could do worse then get in his ear again.

As I've said before should be looked at as a potential replacement.

Hoffman's contract expires next year, should be looking to replace him with someone dynamic or a dominant prop which will allow Matulino to go to 2nd row full time.

Remember reading somewhere that pretty much the entire storm forward pack is off contract next year. We should be throwing the keys to the club to Bromwich and if we don't get him then we should try for Harris and to a lesser extent Proctor.

In order of preference:

1. Bromwich
2. Taumalolo
3. JWH
4. Harris
5. Proctor

fyi its just a coincidence that they are all kiwis..

See Segeyaro has a get out clause if he's made a decent offer by a NRL club..

I do like him but not with that Corey Norman drugs buggage he's got hanging over him though. With Luke with another 2 years on his contract, I can't see us looking at another dominate hooker.

Yes to Procter or J Bromwich though!!

Penrith have just released Soward (www.nrl.com)- basically the article says he is going to England although no details.

While he has a punchable face at times, this is a shame. For some reason I like watching him play, and I think he would be an excellent foil for Johnson. Great kicking game and plays structure well, plus when on form actually has a very good running game.
