Recruitment & Player Retention

Last night was a good barometer as to the validity of the nsw cup as a reserve grade competition and nursery for developing juniors

called upon a lot of the cattle from that team who currently sit first and we would have been better of forfeiting the game, atleast our for and against wouldn't have copped a hammering as it did

I actually feel sorry for Mills, Townsend, Peachey, etc

Clip their wings and drag them through a tar pit for a few years, great approach

NRL need to address this farce of a situation as a matter of priority, too many players are being caught in no man's land, is it any wonder the comp suffers a consistency problem outside the top 4 teams and that the comp is unlikely to sustain expansion atm from a talent point of view

wake the f**k up and fix the issue

If the NSW Cup is utilized correctly, it can be a stepping stone to the NRL rather than a dumping ground. We see clubs who do produce juniors now promoting their talented players into the NSW Cup or alternating them via the Under 20s. This will improve the standard of play thereby making the NSW Cup a defacto reserve grade.

under different circumstances

Mills has gone wayyyyy backwards

The other two in a full strength side are starters
Nothing to do with the Sharks or the NSW cup.
All to do with the local league in the shire & those running it & the ethics they instill in the local players, or more importantly, lack of it.
The shire local league expects the Sharks to be a vehicle for thier players so the individual club can say "there's our boy" playing in the big time , lets pat ourselves on the back & get some more dough from the Sharks.

The association with the local league has always been one of the anchors with the Sharks throughout our short history.

and that's fine but the underlying issue here is keeping a player motivated

problem is every kid wants to be the next big nyc talent to kick on, perception and reality are way off, very low conversion rate atm

They then play nsw cup against a mixture of teams, some not represented at nrl level, at grounds akin to junior football venues, who would stay motivated?

Nrl needs to reinstate a proper reserve grade comp, make NYC either a under 21 or 23 competition, with all clubs are represented at all levels, with the two subordinate grades being curtain raisers

We need to promote inclusiveness at all levels to show a clear pathway

Otherwise we will lose lots of talent who just give up and would rather get on the piss and have a good time
