I could envisage a side like this

1.Dufty
2.Isaako
3.Roberts
4.Opacic
5.Vunivalu
6.Munster
7.Nikorima
8.Taupau
9.Mahoney
10.Mcguire
11.Bateman
12.Sims
13.Horseburgh

14.Cust
15.Eisenhuth
16.Garner
17.Evans

A few coveted players, a few players in need of a new start, a few names past their used by date then a squad filled out with a couple more journeymen and a bunch of youngsters.

Strong enough on paper to make the 8 but probably unlikely to do so

They should have got salary cap concessions for first 5 years to sign players from outside the nrl.

Bit too strong I think

Possibly. Tough exercise without knowing exact salaries etc

That said I kind of envisage a possible approach where they could go quite top heavy in the squad to start out. They're almost going to have the pick of Qcup with plenty of players itching for a chance they could fill a top 30 out with for cheap. Then as/if they really come on you can start moving some of the older players from the foundation squad on and spread the talent a bit more.

This is overly defensive for no reason.

I suspect the reason he is being mentioned, is that he is a QLD Origin player, his contract makes it possible and that Newie don't appear to be a genuine threat anytime soon.

It's all just pure speculation of course.
All it will do is put up his price, and everyone else coming off contract.

Given Bennet's love for Matt Lodge, I think doesn't mind a major dickhead in teams.

Yes bennett has a fondness for the flawed, but as long as they follow his orders, Kane Evans has brain snaps on field, that WILL lose you games, he won't be listening to wayne... but Matt Lodge won't cost you a game thru dumb on field decisions, or writing "fold them cu##s" on his wrist, he would do what wayne asks of him

Rather than try and make some shitty halfback work, they should play the long game and wait for a proper half to come off contract and go hard at them in 2023 or 2024.

in the meantime, throw a short term big money deal at Maloney for 1-2 seasons rolling into a coaching gig. He’d be great in the media, and the bloke is just a natural born winner. Every club he goes to improves 4-5 levels and most importantly maintains that improvement after he leaves.

By the time 2023 rolls around, James Maloney will be almost 37 years old (he turned 35 in June this year). That combined with him playing in the French domestic rugby league competition (which is what he is planning to do) I don't think he will be a viable NRL player.

The Roosters have already started negotiations with Sam Walker on a contract extension, that combined with walker's public comments about how he likes the club and the coaching staff, I think there is 0% chance he signs anywhere but with the Roosters.

I get he’ll be super old, which is why a 1 year player contract rolling into a coaching gig would be what I’d do.

the dolphins first season will be somewhat of a write off anyway, so he’d be great for marketing and then long term would be a tremendous mentor to the playing squad.

if he is too old to play then put him straight into a halves coaching gig and running water. He’d give langer a run for his money

Imagine James Maloney, Cameron Munster, and Allan Langer in your club, the sheds would be full of ratbags, Wayne would deadset quit

Not sure why Ponga is considered a target. It seems to be based on the "Newcastle is poor" trope.

We are as cashed up as anyone, and Newie is a great place to live and play footy.

He has made it pretty clear he isn't leaving.
Because his contract expires end of 2022 with the option in his favour and he is the QLD origin fullback.

He may well stay at Newcastle but if I were involved with the Dolphins recruitment he would be right at the top of my hit list.

If DCE was a couple of years younger I could see them going after him, and I think DCE would probably sign with them.

But then he'd change his mind, stick with Manly and the Dolphins would suck for 10 years.

Why not? Adds to the player pool rather than draining it, brings new blood into nrl, doesn’t weaken existing clubs, doesn’t drive up salary inflation. Or are you still one of those deluded types who thinks the nrl is all equal under the salary cap?

I’d give them an extra $1.5mill a year on salary cap for players signed from outside current nrl squads Or second tier squads. Be good to raid union for a change.

There has been talk of him extending with PENRITH but nothing has been made official and is off-contract as of 1 November.

Wayne Bennett, you need a 14. We need to get rid of a deadshit.

Please sign Tyrone May.

Jamil may be unavailable for a long time.

Allegedly.

Just thought he'd be a good reserve, and he had previously played at redcliffe, i would have thought Kurt Capewell would hold off for a year, so he could join this franchise, but bronx beat wayne to him
