I'm not a fan of Mitchell Pearce in the Origin arena. But in saying that I don't believe we have a better option at this point in time. Adam Reynolds is still far too green after just 1 season at the top level.

You may remember Daniel Mortimer had a break out season in 2009 with Parra and fell away rapidly after that. The very same thing could happen with Adam, although to his credit he does have a very level head and shows maturity beyond his years. It's his present skillset that needs some improvement though, but if anyone can help him with that it's Maguire.

Jarrod Mullen was touted as Joey Johns successor at club and state level early on in his career. Brian Smith actually did the right thing in 2007 by asking the NSW selectors to overlook Jarrod for Blues selection, because he felt he wasn't ready for the burden of playing halfback in a rep squad.

The NSW selectors ignored Smiths request, Jarrod was thrown in before his time and basically imploded. He was dropped after one game and his confidence was shattered. Jarrod was never seen in the Origin arena again and still battles confidence issues at club level today. Bennett is making some progress on that front though.

I believe the Maroons demonstrated how you should ease a half into Origin. They understood that you couldn't just throw a young half in the deep end. Cooper Cronk was brought on to the bench early on in his career as an understudy to Thurston and Lockyer. By the time Lockyer retired, Cronk was ready to take the reins as Queenslands halfback, and the dominance continued.

I believe a similar approach should be adopted by the Blues in that they identify a future rep half (Josh Reynolds is another one being touted for a bench spot) and groom them for Origin by selecting them as a utility. I'm not sure if Mccrone is the answer and personally I see more potential in Sam Williams tbh. I do believe there is a place for a good utility if they're used correctly. The counter argument is you have four forwards on the bench and that will give the Blues coach more of an opportunity to rest Gallen (quality over quantity).

I spoke with some mates about this years Origin series and we drew the positive that in the end we only lost by 1 point in game 3. As a Blues supporter I'm tired of our selectors chopping and changing the squad each year. Stability is a priority, particularly in the spine, and I believe the selectors should show some faith in the blokes who gave it their all in 2012. Including Pearce, even though I don't rate him.
Why have you changed your avatar to a disloyal drug cheat?

One thing to have an avenue for a dunce to become rich, such as selling cars or marrying the boss's daughter, another to
let him have control over a League team. The plight of Rooster and past Eel supporters is highlighted by Nate Myles being
selected as co-captain of the Titans.

No doubt a very respectable team could be made of players from the combined 'too hard' baskets or discard bins of these
underachieving clubs. The mind boggles what could have been, one club with the money and the other the resources,
wasted with inept leadership. Anyway, congratulations to my favourite forward Nate and centre Jamie . . . what goes
around comes around.

Only because they had the luxury at the time.

Thurston when he was selected in 05 was still a very unknown quantity, and many dismissed the selection with scorn. Ultimate faith was shown in him and even though the series was lost the selectors stuck firm and reaped the benefits.

A state can only work with what it has at any given time. Queensland's story has shown that having less options is sometimes a good thing. Unfortunately what works for us rarely works for the other mob, as the Mitchell Pearce experience has shown.

All the feeble minded who believe in imaginary friends or imaginary cheats must be pissing their pants with the
new salary cap increases. The level headed amongst us know Melbourne were only trying to hold on to what
belonged, illegally mind you, justifiably nevertheless. Imagine what they could do now to really upset all the
jealousy drenched f**kwits.

They've got the coach, culture and attraction of perceived elevation to greatness that most players would
find hard to resist given the opportunity. Suppose the Storm turned canine and began poaching instead of
nurturing, imagine the contracts broken to take up the offer to be clad in purple. Last time a team had this
potential they were dressed in the maroon and white of yesteryear.

Any new established prospects such as the Reynolds' would be fair game as future replacements and even any
future supercoach would be eager to perpetuate the legend. The Storm have been the real premier team for
many years without harming anyone, think what they could do if they went to the dark side. You may ask
why I should dredge up the same ol' spiel but when the cap is finalised circumstances will change.

Look at your team, as I do all teams, contemplate how much it relies on players it did not introduce to the top
grade. Also look at players your team nurtured but was denied the chance to keep, either by neglect or red
tape. Thurston for example was perfected at the Cowboys after the Dogs threw him out with the bathwater,
commitment needs to be guided by intelligence and protected by reasoning.

The irony of it all is that if protection from poaching was integrated with the salary cap the game would be on
a more level playing field with a lot less connivance. My bet however is that the Storm will resist the dark side
and continue to be the yardstick for others to emulate . . . would hate to have to relinquish my allegiance.

If this doesn't stir the natives nothing will.

As much as I dislike the Storm your points are pretty valid. I cant think of any big name poachings heading south.

Hey Pops.. do you think your old mate Bellamy is the best coach in the game?

Good try at changing the subject, or was it an attempt to turn the page . . . pretending to be one of the
minority not yet convinced is tedious. I think you're smart enough to realise Jack Gibson was technically
not the best coach of his era either, relying heavily on Ron Massey, as does Bellamy the people he surrounds
himself with. What he does better than the rest is convince players the guidance they receive is second to none

When I said stir the natives I assumed the chiefs would be impervious . . . maybe I give you too much credit

How about leaving your 100mm of bling at home when you visit, unless you have a small man, big car syndrome

700 to 800K each?

I mean, if Adam Blair is on 500K then how much would these blokes be bagging??? f**k, even Michael Jennings was on nearly 700K!

So you're saying the 3 will want to renegotiate their already substantial contracts and the Storm wouldn't be capable of poaching if they wanted to . . . bad idea if you want to remain spot on

There's hardly enough money left in Melb's cap to be purchasing other high profile players and paying 20 or so other blokes to make up the squad of 25. Melbourne can't buy high profile players and pay marquee money for them with the big 3 there. Wasn't the cap in 2012 4.4 million?

Surely Smith, Slater and Cronk wouldn't be accepting deals in the vacinity of an Adam Blair or Chris Sandow??

They would be taking up around 1.8 million of that 4.4 million cap from season 2012. At least? That may be a little conservative??

Going forward, with the cap rising to over 5 million it is a slightly different story. However, would you think Smith, Slater and Cronk might want a bit of that too or would they be happy to forgo increases so others to get a piece as well??
