You misunderstood my point, which was , as far as that game is concerned, the Slater , Klemmer bit is all that will be talked about......ad nauseum.

Despite what I feel was the major point in the game, that of Cronks disallowed try, I couldn't work that one out.

Dumbarse me didn't register who you were, if it did I would have been more conciliatory. While I've got you, do you know of any players Bennett could use in the halves instead of the headless chooks. The Knights are a bit like a 12 guage loaded with buckshot.

Rebecca Wilson is one who has turned her menstrual cycle into a beret and the normal diatribe associated with it as a tirade against Grant and Smith, as would any terrorist who is upset about not being advised of things they don't have a right to interfere in.

It is not just an attack on Smith and Grant but an attack on all who have even a modicum of intelligence. Obviously she lined up for hours like they do for Ellen outside the press conference only to be told what we've all been told, to be patient in a bid not to preempt knee jerking that could cause more damage to the game.

Wilson is an exhibitionist who hasn't been invited to the exhibition, simply because there's nothing to see yet, all the ARLC is trying to do is allay fears by informing us of what we need to know. Asking dumb f**king questions repeatedly in front of a microphone and wetting yourself when you don't get the answers that justify your wages is typical of a journalist who only sees sensationalism as an attraction.

Despite both losing this week the Dogs and Manly clearly look the most comfortable teams so far, we won't be any the wiser about the rest until the smell of woodsmoke drifts across NSW, when temperature ceases to be an issue. The Titans had much publicised hindrances coming into the game but tried to win and the Seagles just expected to win.

By the time the GC proved to all and sundry they are going to be a real deal this year Manly had left it too late to remove finger from arse. Great to see Kelly doing well and the spine combining better each game and the solid defence, although succumbing to the climate over a couple of weeks, was inspiring. Titans and Sharks give out the same vibes and it will be ill advised to treat them lightly.

The Broncos carry about as much footy brain onto the paddock as do the Eels and neither are going anywhere despite having a terrific will to win. Nevertheless, the Roosters done good, played strong and are improving a little each week. Some of the penalties which referees seem ordained to give in Rooster games were pedantic, for both sides, and the refereeing was as bad as in Melbourne.

The winning teams tonight are no longer in the comp just to make up the numbers, which coincidentally goes hand in hand with having competent playmakers.

I've heard that on Monday against the Cowboys, he is going to try Gidley as Hooker with Roberts and Mullen in the halves, I don't know how reliable that is though. But should be more like a 410 loaded with salt peter.

The Knights are akin to a lucky dip again this year, Bennett must be pulling his hair out, the culture at the Knights must be questioned, I hope the whole squad sits down and watches a replay of the Titans and Manly game, the Titans were great....that's how a team should play.

Yes, Titans looked good even if they faded, and the Sharks showed the same sort of enterprise today. Someone should have told Fifita the conditions didn't suit the sort of footy he was playing, he doesn't look athletic but he has been playing as well as any prop. Couple of seasons ago I thought NZ could field another team in the NRL but that's gone pear shaped. Never know, when the cold weather arrives . . . wishful thinking.

Be a shame if anything was to prevent this Cronulla mob from finishing the season intact, they are way ahead of a few clubs now that would be lucky to do well in Superleague

My pet hate has always been the insistence of clubs to persevere with players in positions where they shouldn't be, specifically those of playmaker. I harp on it ad nauseum I know and there may be reasons for it beyond my comprehension . . . wishful thinking, misplaced loyalty, talent scout ineptitude or just plain stubborness. Teams that rely on spur of the moment impulse to get across the line are great to watch as long as they play each other.

Raiders/Dragons was a good example, watching them celebrate every try was like a child finding an Easter egg. The game had everything except the expectation that comes with good defence and smart play, all supporters could hope for was a feeling of relief . . . until next week. These type of matches are candy to the bookies who relish uncertainty and really don't give a f**k behind their fake smiles.

Furner may feel he's a protected species enough to carry on with dumb and dumber while waiting for his illusionist #6 to make another cameo appearance but imo he may be a better coach than that. Maybe he's not confident his job will continue if he replaces much loved meatheads . . . something to do with straws and camels.

The Panthers, looking better with Humble imo, were aided by the base of the mountain cauldron, anyone who has lived with Penrith/Richmond humidity could easily survive NQ. The Rabbitohs didn't want to be there in the worst part of the day and it showed, another example of tv scheduling versus common sense. Not quite ready yet to compete against smart players the Panthers do have a coach that will remedy that before too long, hopefully by tutelage and not chequebook.

Tonight we are going to see another coach, one who should know better, persist with 'playmakers' who would do well in a butcher shop. If the Knights beat the Cowboys it will be by sheer luck but worst still, it will perpetuate the myth only for a short while

'Bout time M'lady, wonder when Furner will do the same with McCrone permanently. Tell the truth, I'm even starting to bore myself with this incessant bleating about ignoring the search for playmakers, comes with the territory when you want all teams to be competitive.

Don't agree with the Eels poaching Norman but if that's the only way they can put some brains on the paddock so be it. Parramatta would be the only trawler in the fleet trying to make a living with a hole in their net, yet again another escapee, Jorge Taufua, was one of a handful of players that stood out on the weekend . . . wouldn't like to play poker with this bloke.

Fifita was another who impressed albeit against the Warriors, considering the Tigers are thin on props he could also be one that got away. Doesn't look fashionable, even may be a little fragile around the knees but short on ticker he aint. If he stays upright for the season Gallen can rest more easily.

Segeyaro is something the Panthers aren't used to, an excitement machine without a meter, his team mates will have no choice but to match his enthusiasm to avoid embarrassment. Kingston should probably be the bench warmer and let James provide the initial shock treatment.

Boyd Cordner impresses me the most of all the Roosters, he bites in defence and is a larger version of Josh Reynolds in attack, of the Rod Reddy mould who would do anything for a win. Great to have players such as these who play the game the way I like it, the more the merrier

Greg Alexander: ''Knights' supporters would have hung their heads when Gidley dropped out" . . . they're the only ones. If Benny drops Roberts in favour of a Gidley return he really has lost it. After last week's effort whouda thought Newcastle would be running equal second, helped no doubt by having a real halfback tonight.

The Cowboys played like a consortium that placed a bet on the outcome.

Good blokes they may be but Mason and Gidley are superfluous to the Knights, the team that played last night are no doubt the best Newcastle has to offer in '13 and good enough they will be if not tampered with. Gidley should do himself, Newcastle, Bennett and NSW a favour and head for the green pastures of ESL, as part of the establishment Benny feels obliged to play him to soothe tormented fans.

Benny may have a hard on for Willie as a shoulder to lean on, a mascot for the fans or just amusement for the team but the less time he spends on the paddock the better off they will be. Houston or even Smith should be the permanent captain and the great display by the forwards last night means their roster should be set in stone.

Never a real fan of Mullen I'd be happy to see him stay if Roberts is left in the halves, a cool headed partner may stop Jarrod overplaying his role. Roberts is another I wouldn't like to play poker with and he looks like he thinks he may be on borrowed time but if Bennett misses the opportunity to do something great with this bloke he's a fool. Could be we'll see one less rudderless team in the comp, only a few left to go.

Pops, whats your thoughts on Gidley and Buderus sharing the hooking role?

Bennett has stated several times in the off-season that Roberts is the Knights future, but there is pressure to play Gidley as he is the 2nd most marketable player on our roster.

Seems like a simple enough solution to many of us Knights fans, but I wont be holding my breath.

It's almost becoming too late to save players by putting them in #9, it won't be long before all dummy halves will be required to kick as part of their resume. Cam Smith and Farah type players are the new frontier of League, the quick chargedowns we see nowdays can't get to them in time. If Gidley was a tactical kicker his athleticism would make him ideal for rotation with Buderus, who's best quality is anti-kneejerking. If Gidley learnt to make himself less predictable by practicing a kicking game the Newcastle faithful could claim against his obsolescence.

Label me as sceptical but I still think Barba's dummy spit was an attempt to do a an ET and return home to Q, thwarted only by a realisation that saving face was preferable to inevitable public indignation. A pin up boy he wants to remain so it's the dreaded SWS for the time being. Dugan has no such qualms however, he clearly wanted out even if he didn't convince Ferguson to sit next to him on the bus.

His reputation suits the old fashioned ideas of tattooed tough guys even if reality is ignominious with stupidity but maybe he's smarter than he looks if he doesn't care about repercussions. Just the same if he becomes a Bronco he still finds himself on the Bismarck, desperately in need of rudder repairs as was the doomed HMAS Canberra

The rivalry that will never die

The "Book of Feuds", commissioned by Souths co-owner Russell Crowe, will raise more than a few eyebrows among supporter groups. I love rivalry. Good stuff!
However, many will see this book as yet another attempt by the South Sydney club to rewrite history in its own words. I played one season for Souths and loved my time there. Along with many others, I fought hard for the club when it was threatened with removal from the NRL during the Super League war and, when wrongly removed, we again fought hard to have the Bunnies rightly reinstated. Not that we received any thanks for it.
Anyway, in response to the declaration of war by South Sydney on all opponents, I have devoted this week's column to an email I received from a well-known Roosters fan. It will give you some understanding of the depth of feeling between the neighbouring supporter groups.
Titled "Why I hate Souths", an extract reads as follows …
"There are as many reasons why Sydney Roosters supporters have such antipathy toward Souths. The main reason is the manner in which Souths have tried to manipulate public opinion and take a mortgage on rugby league history and tradition, calling themselves 'the pride of the league' and constantly attempting to portray themselves as a far more successful club than results show.
"These claims naturally rile Roosters supporters whose club has just as proud a history as their neighbours. We are the only club to have played in all 100 seasons of the NSWRL/ARL/NRL, won more matches (1009) than any other club and produced more internationals (73) than any other club. Together with 12 premierships, 14 runners-up positions, 12 NSWRL club championships and the only club to win 19 successive matches, it is a club not prepared to stand by and let Souths continually claim the high moral ground.
"The term 'league is strong when Souths is strong' has no basis. But this has never prevented Souths supporters and naive scribes repeating it. Any serious analysis reveals the game has been at its strongest over the past 20 years, a period in which Souths have regularly been cellar dwellers - they've played in no grand finals and just two final series.
"Prior to their brief finals appearance last season, the previous 15 years saw Souths never finish higher than ninth and in 12 of those years, they were lower than 12th, yet the game has not suffered as a result of Souths' continual failures. Their propaganda machine tells of their large supporter base, but even a casual glance at their home crowds over the past 20 years indicates that if these supporters exist, they do not attend Souths games. The rare home matches featuring a crowd over 15,000 during this period were invariably played with a co-tenant of the venue.

"The big issue is that Souths fans believe they're somehow different and superior to all other league fans. They claim they stick through thick and thin when no one else would (they don't), and they've put up with so much more than everyone else (they haven't).
"Many Roosters supporters resent the way their own junior teams, who participate in joint competitions with Souths, are treated by the administrators of those competitions. Others were sickened by the way Souths turned on the Roosters, who could have killed off Souths forever had they turned their backs on clubs like them and joined Super League. Despite the Roosters' support for Souths throughout the Super League war, after Souths were dropped from the NRL they tried to push players negotiating to join the Roosters to instead join Super League clubs like the Bulldogs, who were instrumental in their demise in the first place.
"Local Sydney league boundaries were based on local government boundaries when clubs were formed back in the early 20th century. Souths' boundaries were based on the municipalities of Redfern, Botany, Alexandria, Mascot and Waterloo, while the Roosters' boundaries were those of the eastern municipalities of Paddington, Woollahra, Vaucluse, Randwick and Waverley.
"Many of these councils have since amalgamated, as demographic changes affected the inner and eastern suburbs of Sydney. Randwick Council has a western boundary of Anzac Parade and incorporates all those eastern suburbs east of Anzac Parade, and these suburbs like Randwick, Coogee and Maroubra were all part of the Roosters' territory from 1908 to 1929. Does anyone living in those suburbs then or now not claim to live in the eastern suburbs?
"But in 1929 a number of clubs led by Souths and Balmain helped change the NSWRL constitution so that instead of needing 75 per cent [of the vote] to remove a team from the competition, only 50 per cent was needed. Once the constitution was changed, Balmain, with Souths' help, moved to kick foundation club Glebe from the competition. Roosters fans can't miss the irony in this, given the events 70 years later.
"Soon after, these same clubs changed the constitution back, to protect themselves from future expulsion, so 75 per cent of the vote was again required to remove a club from the then NSWRL. As part of the deal to remove Glebe, Balmain took over Glebe's territory and Souths annexed that part of the Roosters territory east of Anzac Parade and south of Alison Road. The Roosters were as a result left without much of their natural territory, and a large future source of young talent. This was very relevant because for many years you needed to reside within your team's boundaries to play for that club.

"Souths won seven of their 20 premierships with a significant part of the Roosters' territory, while the residential rule was in place. The two players in recent years that Souths have so resented playing for the Roosters, Craig Wing and Braith Anasta, due to their alleged status as Souths juniors, did in fact play their junior football for clubs in the eastern suburbs, which was original Roosters territory, and should still be.
"Again in 1983 after Newtown were excluded from the competition, Souths were again all over the carcass of another foundation club, moving swiftly to grab Newtown's territory and denying the Roosters' attempts to reclaim its former territory as part of a much needed realignment of boundaries.
"Does anybody remember Souths expressing any opposition to the NSWRL's unsuccessful move to exclude Wests from the competition in the early '80s or to Newtown's exclusion in 1983?
"The fact is that Souths, like many clubs with such a long history, have plenty of skeletons in the closet, and when given the power and opportunity, have acted ruthlessly in their own self-interest without any regard to the wellbeing of other traditional clubs or the game itself.
"As a result, their continual whingeing and rewriting of history has grated on many league supporters, but, in particular, those of the one club that feels it has just as much right to celebrate its history as any other."
Wow! Some feuds have a long history!

A bloke once told me that Jabba was a f**kwit who never left a club in as good condition as he found it, now you want me to read some rubbish you've dug up that suits your vendetta against the Rabbitohs for what reason I know not. Jabba also won the TV Fugly Award for the 'Most Biased Commentator' 4 years in a row, the last being 2008, the year of this article. He also was left without a club when Newtown were tossed out in '83. You should know better than to try and impress me with something from a man I think is highly overrated . . . dinner next week, and I will drink your beer.

One long neck too many for you, where did I say Jabba wrote it. Worse than that he researched it from an unreliable source, even more so than the man himself. The author of the article does exactly what he claims Souths to have done, whinge to explain their existence. F**k, got up for a leak and can't go back to sleep, recently watched a mini series with Kevin Costner about the Hatfields and McCoys, dead ringer for Souths/Roosters and equally as irrelevant to common sense

Interesting thoughts on the situation from somebody not blinded by club bias or loathing.

You see it as saving his career, I see it as best utilising his limited skill set.

Gidley will never have a good kicking game. His most useful kick is the wobbly, ugly, impossible to read the bounce grubber that he utilises once in a blue moon.... probably because he knows how terrible it looks...... and even he doesnt know where it will end up.
