Reds or Relocation?

With all the talk of Sydney clubs needing to find new markets to survive what are people feelings about us maybe not having the Reds back in the NRL but having a semi relocated Sydney club?

As an example:

WA Reds remain but as the feeder club in the Q'land cup. This gives WARL players a clear career pathway to getting in the NRL or playing at a higher level.

South Sydney become the Western Rabbitohs and play 7 games in Perth and 6 games at SFS. This gives us access to Sth's juniors and provides Sth's with two marketbases.

Ideally I would like to see us have our own team but the other option does have some positives as well.

if it did come down to this, which i hope not cause i'd love to have a wa nrl team,
i wouldn't want the clubs to be changed at all, cause the history and tradition is very special and unique, but either every 2nd week a new team brings their home game to perth, or every 4th week the same team brings their game to perth.
with the latter, we can easily support this team, however with the former we get to see all the superstars.

How about a merger of WA Reds & some random Sydney team?

I like this idea!

I think the perfect team is Newtown!

The WA Jets!

Newtown are a feeder club in NSW and also use local WA clubs as feeder clubs.

It brings a great ability to market and sell memberships to all Newtown fans and also a whole new market in WA.

You have a base in WA and a base in Sydney (Henson park, Jets sports club etc)

You also add many many years to your club's history!

This is exactly what the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions do! I see no reason why something like this couldn't work in league!

i dont like the idea of sharing home games with another state, kind of takes away from the whole West Australia thing.

not bagging any of the above idea's though, i think they'd work but only with a sole home ground.

.....i didnt like sharing as a kid lol

The thing is, if a Sydney team relocated to Perth, they play in Sydney every 2nd week anyway, so their Sydney-based fans can still go out to see them play frequently. Plus, more and more teams are using ANZ Stadium as their home ground, so they'll play most of their away games there anyway.

Should South Sydney take themselves to Perth permanently, I like the idea of them being called the WA Rabbitohs - so we can still attend games at the WAR Zone! The idea of having the WA Reds as a feeder club to them is also a good idea (if this scenario turns into reality).

I couldn't bring myself to buy any merchandise of the relocated Sydney team (especially if it turns out to be Cronulla). I am far too much of a Newcastle supporter to do so. I would be going to the games, and I would be hoping they do well enough for Perth (and indeed WA) to support their team, and I would be hoping they do service to the game of League well over here, but I'd be supporting them as a 2nd team and no more.

Very true. It would be sad for League in Australia for a club to have to move to Perth just to stay alive (especially for a club like Souths who are 100 years old), but, like Alehana, I would love to have the NRL here in any way that it comes. I would love to again be able to cheer on my Knights once a year without having to spend a few hundred dollars and flying 4,000km to do so.

if a club relocates it should be a club which plays the majority of their home games at homebush, that way their east states supporters would still be able to make it to a lot of their games

That shouldn't be the basis of any relocations directly, but it would certainly be a benefit for them. Indirectly though, the majority of the clubs using ANZ Stadium as a home (part-time or full-time) are doing so for the $100,000 per game that ANZ Stadium pays them. These clubs are struggling financially moreso than other Sydney clubs that don't use ANZ Stadium as a home, therefore they are more likely to need to relocate in order to survive.

I have said for years that South Sydney would go great on the Central Coast, so I agree with you. I'm guessing Souths have been mentioned as a possibility of moving to Perth because of their proposed '2 games a year in Perth' thing.

and the link with PHaC. Looking at the disappointing 8,000 that turned out at CC I'm not sure that Sth's would gain much beyond the $8mill sweetner if they moved up there.
