If that is the rule, the non-offending side should have the choice for the location of the penalty. Easier kick where the offence occurred than where the ball landed. The rule was about yardage gain but in the modern game, crossfield kicks are so common, it should be changed.

DCE prevents the Titans from scoring by grabbing a leg to prevent a quick play the ball, no professional foul, no sin bin and 60 seconds later Manly race down the other side and score.

Speaking of "choose your advantage", in the first half, Panthers winger jumps from the in goal, and catches the ball on the full despite being tackled in the air.

Ref penalises. Panthers get a free kick 1m from the sideline, 10m out from goal line. Due to the angle of the kick, Panthers only make ~10m with the kick.

So instead of 20m tap from the centre and 7 tackles, Panthers get a 20m tap, 10m in and only 6 tackles.

Surely the greater advantage is the 7 tackles set?

Annesley flagged the return of the Disruptor during his weekly review after the Disruptor non call in the Cowboys v Bulldogs match . In April this year he actually stated that the referees need to look at the eyes of the chaser ,amongst other indicators, to determine if a player is disrupting a contest. The mind boggles.

I have been watching rugby league since 1970 and the current standard of refereeing is diabolical , without doubt collectively the worst that I’ve ever seen. Prepare for a barrage of penalties over this week’s round for anything that even vaguely resembles a disruptor . BTW , what are these mysterious “other indicators?” NRL fans should be afraid. Very afraid .

After about a 2 months of this ridiculous interpretation , chasers stopped contesting kicks (apart from try scoring opportunities) because the risk of a conceding a penalty and losing field position was too high. This was having a detrimental effect on the game as a spectacle and the rule appeared to be unofficially consigned to the scrap heap . Until now.

I remember a game in the last year or two where a player (I think it was Gutho) lined up for a short kick off on the wrong side of the 50m line and the Ref told him he couldn't under the rules of the game.
