I was at Suncorp yesterday, that forward pass leading to the Dolphins try was clear, and I was on the other side. The crowd knew it was forward too

The product is shit, but match officials in RU shit all over RL from a great height.

We shouldn’t be poaching their players, it’s the refs we should be targeting.
Disagree, but I haven't watched a union game for a decade or so. Back when I watched they were blowing 40 or 50 penalties a game and games were resulting in a team winning by 6 penalty goals to 5 penalty goals. It is a part of the reason why the 'product' is so shit.

The technical penalties around their set piece were ridiculous, and I played the game for nearly a decade. After stopping, ten years later I had no idea what most of the penalties were for and I knew the game inside out. Like I've said here before, there is absolutely nothing about rugby union we should be copying. Poach their players ... sure ... but copy their game, no f***ing thanks.

Haven’t watched the game in a decade but you disagree that their officials aren’t good?

Comprehension also not your strongest skill - didn’t say their rules are superior, why would we want to turn into RU. Their officials are superior, and with time, not long either, would be better NRL referees than the current crop.

No need to question my comprehension just because I don't agree with you. Why would I sit through a game that I don't enjoy and one which I think is inferior? Last time I watched I thought the game was shit and from what I have seen it has only gotten worse since then. Why would I watch that? To admire the referees?

You’re still talking about apples when the topic is bananas.

I watch and appreciate both Union and League. Refereeing is an issue in both and both are plagued by the same issues around concussion etc.

The problem with NRL Referees is that they have their instincts trained out of them. They become robots who use a vocabulary only they understand, and interpret rules in opposition to their intent and the spirit of the game. Anyone who doesn't adhere to this style of refereeing doesn't make it to SG Ball level, let alone NRL.

Any hypothetical Rugby convert would suffer the same fate, or they simply wouldn't make it.

You're right. You admitted their product is shit, we shouldn't poach their players but instead should poach their referees. So you watch that shit-show to marvel at their referees. Good for you old chap.

How many forward passes did old Union mate let go? Complaining about forward passes in league yet using a Union ref as your flag bearer. They blow 50 penalties a game. They sinbin players for getting an intercept wrong.

The officiating in league isn't good at the moment but step back and take a look at the state of both codes. It's pretty clear that Union is in a pretty shit position.
Reading comprehension: 1/10.

I am not saying anything about union's position, or their laws, or the quality of the product. I thought I made that very clear. I don't particularly enjoy union - I don't watch any version of it apart from the All Blacks. I grew up obsessed with it, so that's an indictment on the game. I agree with you, their code is in a dire state.

I am saying the quality of professionalism, communication, just the general ability to do their job properly in union refs, across the board, is so much better than league. If you swapped league refs and union refs, our game would become better officiated, and union would cease to exist. Our refs are so incompetent, so poor in their communication style, it's ridiculous. Union's laws are so much more convoluted than league, but which game has half a dozen complete f**k-ups each week - and not only that, but from a replay system...not even in real time?

You watch, this weekend there will be 3-4 complete f**k ups in the NRL, and almost none in international rugby. It's not the laws, because union's are a shitstorm. It's the officials.

I think the problem is they're not very intelligent. What tells me that, is the condescending way they speak to players, and the lack of basic thinking that goes into decision making. Classic example - the Adam Gee non-call on Jaemon Salmon's late hit on TMM last month. Annesley says it was wrong, and Gee looked at the contact but not the lateness. Holy f**k. I'd had 6 beers, and I saw both.

Maybe it's a societal thing, that union refs are raised in the rah-rah private school environment. I dunno. But our refs are imbeciles.

You should become a league referee.

All we're saying is that union refs have a better handle on their game. Their product is pretty shit, their laws are a mess, etc. All that is accepted. And hell, you admit you haven't watched in a decade. I do, others do. I love league. It's so far superior, honestly there's a galaxy between the codes. But I'm so f**king sick of the poor officiating in our game. It won't hold it back, because league is largely bulletproof it's such a great sport. But I hate the injustice, the constant discussion of refereeing f**k-ups every week when we could be discussing other things. Union doesn't often have that, it just has fans bemoaning how lame their laws are and referees can never win, because the laws are so ambiguous and therefore, the losing team generally feels aggrieved.

Haha. Do you know what I really can't comprehend? People who admit something (in this case rugby union) is shit to watch, but still spend 2 hours of their time watching shit?

Now what you and Mr Shaman don't seem to comprehend is that the referees for either code play an important role in the end product. I think we all agree that rugby league is the superior product? Yeah. Well credit to the referees for helping it not look like the shitshow that rugby union is.

The NRL referees are an easy target for pundits and journos but go to any gameday conversation, whether here or other social media platforms and everyone complains about missed penalties, f-ups, and 'game management'. If NRL referees reffed like Union ref's or we poached their ref's we would have 50 penalties a game because they referee to the laws of the game. The appeal of the NRL is it is attacking, free flowing football, we have plenty of superstar players who are amazing to watch and that is what we tune in for. It sounds like you and Shaman watch the rahrahs to admire a splendid refereeing performance. I don't want to watch a game where a f#**ing ref blows 50 penalties a game for stupid technicalities and many Australians and it looks like Kiwis feel the same way at the moment.

The senior management of rugby league have made the right call/s with how our game looks and Union is the complete opposite. Now there needs to be some improvements made in refereeing - I'd be wanting changes to the bunker, because I actually think they are more the problem than the onfield adjudication - and that road leads back to Annesley who has list the plot. But if poaching Union ref's is your answer you're asking the wrong bloody questions. That would make our game worse, much worse.

What if their last name is Sutton?
Nepotism is also a massive factor in the current crop.
